The Witcher 3: Blood and Wine PS4/Xbox One Performance Compared

The console versions hold up nicely, though PS4 holds a slight edge.

The Witcher 3's final expansion, Blood and Wine, is now available, and it looks as if the console versions hold up pretty nicely, according to a new report.

Digital Foundry has examined the newly released DLC on PS4 and Xbox One and found that, while the PS4 version overall holds a slight edge, both do a reasonable job of replicating what's available on PC. The PS4 version runs at a native 1920x1080 resolution, while the Xbox One version "typically" runs at 1600x900. Texture quality is said to be identical between the two, while the geometry on both consoles is no different from the PC version.

Draw distance is identified as being the chief visual difference between PC and consoles. You can see in the video above how shadows are much more prominent on PC at long distances.

The video also provides a framerate comparison of the two console versions, with the early hours of the expansion running at "a nearly locked 30 FPS" on both. There are some dips while approaching the expansion's main city, particularly on Xbox One. PS4 has some dropped frames as well, but thankfully neither of the two has any issues (so far) that are comparable with Crookback Bog, an area in the base game that presented serious technical hiccups.

Blood and Wine is a huge expansion, adding an estimated 30 hours of gameplay and more than 90 quests in the new region of Toussaint. You can read GameSpot's review here.
