The Walking Dead's Jeffrey Dean Morgan On The Future Of Negan

Where is Negan going at the end of The Walking Dead finale?

Comments

The Walking Dead's main show aired its finale Sunday, ending after 11 years and bringing to a close some of these characters' stories as well. There are spin-offs in the works, including one with Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan and Lauren Cohan's Maggie set in New York, titled The Walking Dead: Dead City. During the finale, Negan apologized to Maggie and listened as she told him she could never forgive him for what he did to her husband Glenn. However, she let him know that if Negan and Annie (Negan's wife) wanted to stay, they could.

Did he though? Negan's final scene was nodding to Daryl (Norman Reedus, and star of his own future Walking Dead spin-off) before walking away. Morgan doesn't believe he'll stay, which lines up with the future that's been laid out.

"He's going off to start a family and kind of start over," Morgan told Entertainment Weekly. "He has that bit to Daryl, and then he's off. That's it. I think that they've all reached an understanding. There's been a level of acceptance with Negan, which I think has been a hard-fought battle for Negan. And of course, then he leaves. He and his wife are going off."

Morgan said that there were a few more goodbyes for Negan planned in the original script, but after talking to director Greg Nicotero, they trimmed it down to highlight the importance of the ones they filmed. The actor continued about the importance of the final scene with Maggie and how they came to an understanding with one another, something that will likely be explored with their spin-off.

"They have an understanding at this point. I thought that was an important way, especially after the last year, spending so much time together," Morgan said. "It took us a lot of years to work together before we actually had a couple of scenes we did this season, so I thought that was cool. That was Negan's biggest goodbye in this finale."

The Walking Dead: Dead City premieres next year.
