The US Army Returned To Twitch--And Hundreds Of "War Crimes" Comments

The US Army streamed for the first time since banning viewers for mentioning war crimes in chat.

On Friday, the US Army esports team has returned to Twitch after voluntarily leaving the platform last month. The stream opened with a long period of time in which a lone streamer sat on camera while viewers in chat spammed messages like "WARCRIMES." Very little has changed since the last time the Army attempted this, except that this time, these messages did not result in bans for their authors.

Throughout the stream, the chat flooded with messages about white phosphorus, the defunding of the USPS, US war crimes, and more as Chris "Goryn" Jones sat on camera awkwardly. He did answer some of the more straightforward questions, like who his favorite Twitch streamer is, between long, uncomfortable pauses. He eventually started playing World of Warcraft for around 1,500 viewers.

The more pointed questions and comments largely went ignored, although at one point, Jones stated, "Everybody has the [right] to their own opinions." The stream started under the "just chatting" section on Twitch before he hopped onto the MMO.

The US Army's presence on Twitch became the subject of controversy in July after it joined the platform as part of an outreach and recruitment initiative. The US Army and the US Navy have banned viewers who ask or talk about war crimes, which is potentially a violation of the First Amendment right to free speech. Twitch stepped in and stopped the US Army from promoting the fake giveaways that would give viewers' information to military recruiters.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted down a measure that would have prevented the Army and other branches of the military from recruiting on platforms like Twitch on July 30. Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez proposed the amendment but 103 Democrats, who currently have the majority in the House of Representatives, joined Republicans in voting it down.

Bunch of neckbearded cowards who still live with their parents hiding behind the internet talking crap to a guy who has nothing to do with the decisions the US government has made in the past. Pathetic morons.

It might be more worthwhile attacking the politicians who misuse the military than the soldiers who do what they're ordered to.

Case in point - George W. Bush is a real war criminal but is now best friends with Ellen and the radical Hollywood Left. Obama started multiple wars and dropped drone strikes on hundreds of people, but received the Noble Peace Prize and also remains a darling of the Left.

But I guess it's easier for the Left to ignore the sins of their favourite politicians, and instead turn their sights on lower income people who want to serve and defend their country.

And yet all the Leftist soy lanklets continue consooming and supporting sweatshop gear, support famous traffickers and digitally pound their chest in narcissism disguised as social justice (per usual). Thank you, activists. The eternal BTFO comes in November. Your need for group validation due to you being socially worthless has an expiration date. The era will not be kind to you.

I am always surprised at the “all or nothing” view of many of these comments. I am assuming / hoping most people see this as a bit more nuanced a situation, and perhaps it’s mostly the partisan that get fired up enough to bother commenting.

I support our country and military (see below) but recruiting young people through video games seems wrong and deceptive to me.

1. Deciding to serve in the military is serious business with the most serious consequences. Does not feel right to mix it up with playing games.

2. I do not think Violence and taking lives, in real life, should be mixed in with a medium where we purposefully downplay the seriousness of these things, where games are designed to make killing someone else not a big deal, but just fun. I am not saying most people would be actually confused, but it feels wrong and sends the wrong message. I wouldn’t want to recruit police with a game that was just about getting points for killing. Anyone who is authorized to take life has a very complicated job.

3. The cherry on the deceptive sundae here, which unfortunately seems to underline the thinking of the people behind this, was tricking people into giving away their contact info with a fake giveaway so they could be recruited.

Before people attack me: I love my country. We’re far from perfect, but I believe we are among a handful of democracies that are a huge step forward from non-democratic countries on the world. I believe we unfortunately need a military to survive and I’m grateful for those who serve with honor. I also believe we are just humans, and so have sometimes used our military, and placed our amazing service members at grave risk, for the wrong reasons, as all powerful countries unfortunately do.

Seems like par for the course in today's gov. "Let's just keep doing what's wrong after we know that it's wrong." Yea, **** the military. But also **** the people below w/ the whole "moral high ground" bs.

The stream should be as free to receive praise as it is criticism, seems fair, and in line with free speech, if someone wants to say they are proud to serve their nation, and enjoy having a military in its current form, so be it, if people want to say they think war is pointless and avoidable, and cite crimes their leaders committed using the military, also so be it, its only fair.

@JusticeSword: This, if it is an appropriate platform for promotion of military, and recruitment... then it is also an appropriate platform for criticisms. To silence it one way doesn't help with the volunteer aspect of the military as this type of action will warrant less people being enticed to join.

Though who really wants equality, or even things to be remotely fair? Most truly just want special privileges for themselves, or whatever groups they identify with.

@Lach0121: Debating, respectful criticism and rampant spam/trolling where the sole intent is to disrupt are two different things.

This would be moderated on any Twitter channel, just as it's blocked on Gamespot with them literally closing down comment sections.

@uninspiredcup: Being upfront about recruiting measures, and being underhanded about it are two different things.

Secondly, any criticism of the military (respectful or not) is viewed as trolling, or hating America (which is being trolled)

Nope, their is a very clear distinction and it applied to practically any Twitch channel. They all have moderators to filter out disruption.

And, as the author of this article proudly proclaims, they are being spammed, with the sole intent of disruption.

@uninspiredcup: I wasn't speaking of just twitch, nor of its policy on my last sentence. I was speaking to the culture of the country. They can promote, and be proud on any platform, but the criticisms are in fact quite limited to which platforms they can be uttered. Speaking of criticisms of the military. However, I am moving on.

I don't think so, man. If you're running a Twitch stream, you can make up whatever rules you want for it, and ban users from watching you for whatever reason.

The decision may have broader implications for how the First Amendment applies to officials’ accounts in the social-media era."

I mean, we all know by now that war and weapon sales are what mainly fuels the US economy. War crimes just come with the territory. It's pointless and even counterproductive for Americans to strike against that, especially with a disposable grunt on a streaming device.

The irony of Internet Bullies taking the moral high ground against men and women who risk their lives to protect the nation is simultaneously hilarious and disgusting.

I want to laugh, but fear that all that would come out of my mouth is vomit.

Honestly, what is this bizarre trend of villainous people doing terrible things in the name of justice? I suppose that all these worthless scumbags can ever hope to aspire to is serving as an illustration which adequately personifies hypocrisy.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: A lot of the gaming media are basically activists and Antifa supporters, where-by they (ironically much like the Army) use the platform as a means of propaganda to imprint ideas on the reader.

In most cases, I think rather than getting group think, it has the opposite effect where-by gamers will actively side with the thing they are inciting them to take issue with.

@uninspiredcup: Boom! Totally true. A lot of things I was neutral over now just bugs me because whiners won't STFU. I was already doing a shitload more for equal rights than any of you whiners were doing, anyway. And ACTUAL equal rights, not just firing deserving people and replacing them with diversity hires.
