The Super Mario Bros. Movie Has Broken All These Box Office Records
The animated video game movie is soaring at the box office.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Minions studio Illumination and Nintendo is putting up huge numbers at the box office, but just how much of a success is the animated film? The Hollywood Reporter dug into this and rounded up all the records that the film has set.
The movie opened with $377 million worldwide, which makes it the biggest worldwide opening of all time for an animated movie, surpassing the previous record-holder Frozen 2 ($358 million). The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $146.4 million for the Friday-Sunday period in the US, which is second only to Incredibles 2, which made $183 million stateside for its opening weekend in 2018.
At $171 million from international markets for its opening weekend, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is also the second-biggest international opening of all time for an animated movie. It trails only Frozen 2, which made $228.2 million from foreign markets for its debut.
As one would expect, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now the biggest opening of all time for a video game adaptation in the US and worldwide. Another record that The Super Mario Bros. Movie achieved is biggest opening for any movie--animation or otherwise--so far in 2023. Ant-Man and the Wasp, the previous record holder for 2023, made $225.3 million worldwide for its opening.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is doing better than Illumination's Minions films, too, becoming Illumination's biggest opening in the film studio's history. Head to The Hollywood Reporter to see a further breakdown of all the box office records that The Super Mario Bros. Movie broke.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the sixth highest-grossing video game movie of all time worldwide right now, and it's closing in on Uncharted ($401.7 million) and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 ($405.4 million) to climb further up the charts. As mentioned, Warcraft continues to be the highest-grossing video game movie ever with $439 million globally.
