Director James Gunn wanted to film with a lot of practical effects, and he got his wish.

Warner Bros. has released a new behind-the-scenes featurette for The Suicide Squad in which director James Gunn and members of the cast hype the superhero film and tease more of what to expect from it.

In particular, writer-director James Gunn said The Suicide Squad is the biggest movie he's ever made and that one of his goals was to film most of it using practical effects--and he achieved this. In the video, you can get a glimpse at the great lengths the crew went to film with practical effects and in real locations like Panama as opposed to relying too heavily on CG. In one sequence, we see a water scene with camera operators submerged. "You're hearing the explosions, you're smelling the gunpowder, and that ups the ante," Harley actress Margot Robbie says in the video.

Of course, the movie does use a number of visual effects shots, and Sylvester Stallone's entire King Shark character is completely CG.

Gunn also spoke about how he had the support of film studio Warner Bros. to do whatever he wanted with the film. As a result, the movie is "everything I want it to be," Gunn says.

The Suicide Squad opens in theaters and on HBO Max on August 6. For more, check out GameSpot's guide to how to watch The Suicide Squad on HBO Max.

In other news, The Suicide Squad was recently given an R rating for, among other things, "graphic nudity," but we don't know yet who will be naked.

The Suicide Squad also stars Joel Kinnaman, Idris Elba, Nathan Fillion, Viola Davis, Pete Davidson, and many more big names.
