James Gunn's The Suicide Squad Trailer Drops, And It's The Funniest One Yet

The new trailer for James Gunn's The Suicide Squad film is out now, and it features the director's signature humor in full force. The movie will release simultaneously in theaters and on the streaming service HBO Max on August 6, sticking to Warner Bros.' plan to release all of its 2021 movies on the service when they hit theaters.

In the new trailer, which you can see below, we're introduced to a cavalcade of supervillains who have come together for the greater good--or to get released from their prison sentences by completing suicide missions. Check it out below--and as a red band trailer, it's not really safe for work.

Obviously, the trailer has a good sense of humor to it--much like director James Gunn's work on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Plus, it has a giant sharkman eating people--that's King Shark, played by Sylvester Stallone--and John Cena's Peacemaker talking about devouring a beach covered in penises.

Gunn wrote and directed The Suicide Squad. Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn, and a few other actors will return as well. Jai Courtney will once again appear as Captain Boomerang, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. The film also features Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, and James Gunn stalwarts Michael Rooker and Sean Gunn.

Earlier this week, Gunn dropped a second image of a '70s war movie-inspired poster for the film.

The film is in a weird space somewhere between a sequel and a reboot. With some of the first film's biggest stars returning, it certainly has connections to the profitable-but-poorly-received original, but Gunn and Warner Bros. have continually downplayed connections between the two.

Here's the official synopsis for the film:

"Welcome to hell--a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and destroy mission with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them."
