The Steam Controller in action

Valve releases video demonstrating new controller handling games like Portal 2, Civilization V, and Counter-Strike.

Valve released a video today showing how the Steam Controller will work. It is the first time Valve has shown the controller in action following its announcement late last month.

In the video, a Valve employee demonstrates how the controller works for a variety of games, including Portal 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Papers, Please; and Civilization V. Check out the full video below.

Additional demonstrational videos, featuring footage from third-party developers, will be released in the future, Valve said.

The controller featured in the video is the same version that will ship this year to 300 Steam users as part of the Steam Machines beta.

The Steam Controller will work with all past, present, and future games on Steam, including those that were not built with controller support. Valve can achieve this by "fooling" the older games into thinking they are being played with mouse and keyboard.

The input is the first mainstream controller to feature haptic feedback. It also features dual circular trackpads that replace traditional thumbsticks. These trackpads are clickable, turning the entire surface into a button. The Steam Controller will be available alongside Steam Machines in 2014.

Oh man.. you have to keep moving your thumb and repeat swiping to keep turning.. I do not like that at all.

You don't have to do it like that.

You can make it 100% 1:1 until you reach the edge of the pad and then have it turn at an appropriate speed for as long as you hold your thumb there.

Just like it works when you use the Wiimote pointer for fps games for example.

Or you could make the range much further on a single swipe and moreso the closer you get to the edge of the screen.

Or you can make it work like a trackball where you swipe once to make is spin, the faster you swipe the faster it spins, and you just just touch again to stop it where you want.

Or you could just make it work like an analogue stick where the closer you move your thumb to the edge the faster you turn.

There's quite a few options here.

<< LINK REMOVED >> In the video they said it is configurable, so you can have your thumb in one place just like on a regular controller. It is based on preference.

Out of the 3 controllers that haven't come out yet this is second to the Xbone. PS4 is last.

Well, it's a new controller entering the market so of course we would feel unfamiliar and uneasy around it, but can i relate to this as a PC gamer?, well, i can say that it somehow feels better suited for FPS games than the usual console controllers but still it's NOT a mouse. yes, i am quite overly attached to my mouse. I will keep steam machines in my Radar. definitely Interested.

This can easily become the new standard for couch-players for every genre, beat-em up apart.

The controller responds in a great way and clearly is a good fusion between controller play and keyboard/mouse play but I am still left rather indifferent about it. Something about this controller just doesn't sit right with me if that makes sense. Of course, I am not saying it is a bad controller either because I haven't used it.

I do feel like it could be more of a hindrance than benefit with certain game types but to each his/her own.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well its completely different from any controllers out there so its normal to feel that way, because it doesn't follow the norm of a gaming controller.

Gotta admit that it does look way better than I initially thought, but this video kinda does cement that it won't be really good for fighting games, fast paced RTS, MOBA or ARPG games.

In fact, I'm struggling to see how you'd even play anything where it would require you to press like 2 or more face buttons + a direction at the same time.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Um, there are no good controllers for RTSs or MOBAs (especially fast paced ones). Fighting games I can understand, but RPGs would play fine on this, since there are more than just the four buttons you see on the front.

@red_city There are 4 buttons in the back 8 in the middle (on the version without a touch screen) and 3 in the bottom front part of the controller. So there are buttons to map for when u need to do that.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The beta version of the controller is wired and has 4 buttons in place of the touch screen. Just for the beta hardware, though

This looks interesting, and I'm eager to get one in my hands to try it out. There really hasn't been a significant shake up in standard controllers since rumble (WiiMote's notwithstanding).

That said, every time I see this thing, it makes me think of WALL-E. Like it's his evil parallel universe double or something. STeAM-E.

Hmmm, IDK.....This is one of the reasons I have game on consoles more than my PC. I just want to plop a game in and not have to worry about configuring my controller for each game.....

<< LINK REMOVED >> Most games will have a default profile I think.. most first person shooters are all WASD and Mouse.. so it's a standard control scheme, for example. It is important to be able to configure, for those "odd" games, that have distinct controls, though.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> PLayers will be able to share their config, so there will be thousands of them. And most games have seemless transition from k/m to xbox 360 controller when gaming on the PC. You just need to make sure your controller is on before lunching the game.

I don't like it. Having to take your thumb off the trackpad and move it to the other side to continue rotating reminds me too much of the tedium of gaming with a laptop track-pad. I can't imagine how this will best traditional joysticks, or match the precision of a mouse.

<< LINK REMOVED >> He showed it using 1:1 movement, and said it was a mode. This implies there will be other modes, such as emulating an analog stick, ie: hold to one side and it keeps going, rather than one finite movement. Remains to be seen, but it would make total sense.
