The Steam Controller in action

Valve releases video demonstrating new controller handling games like Portal 2, Civilization V, and Counter-Strike.

Valve released a video today showing how the Steam Controller will work. It is the first time Valve has shown the controller in action following its announcement late last month.

In the video, a Valve employee demonstrates how the controller works for a variety of games, including Portal 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Papers, Please; and Civilization V. Check out the full video below.

Additional demonstrational videos, featuring footage from third-party developers, will be released in the future, Valve said.

The controller featured in the video is the same version that will ship this year to 300 Steam users as part of the Steam Machines beta.

The Steam Controller will work with all past, present, and future games on Steam, including those that were not built with controller support. Valve can achieve this by "fooling" the older games into thinking they are being played with mouse and keyboard.

The input is the first mainstream controller to feature haptic feedback. It also features dual circular trackpads that replace traditional thumbsticks. These trackpads are clickable, turning the entire surface into a button. The Steam Controller will be available alongside Steam Machines in 2014.

I have never understood what it is that keeps people from getting into PC gaming. Just some time ago I put together a desktop computer for a friend to be used mostly for multimedia and web and it was also fully capable to be played on. It's also connected to his TV and is right next to it. He also uses it with a Logitech diNovo Edge while sitting on the couch. I even offered to help set games up and give a Logitech Rumblepad II to him but no. He has to buy a PS3. And pay (a lot) more for the games, pay for Plus services and fiddle with disks. I just do not get it. What is it about PCs that turn people away?

Maybe this will finally start to blur the line between consoles and PCs? It looks very promising and seems to be the biggest innovation in gaming for years.

I've built my own PC as well, and you have to admit, it's daunting, especially on your first try with rather expensive pieces of hardware. Some people just don't want to mess around with these kinds of things to make a PC work the same as a console, when you can just buy a console for the pure convenience.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I like to research the components and I even like how they smell when you start to open the packages. I've built so many systems that I've lost count. I can understand that everyone doesn't like it but a PC doesn't have to be self-built.

Sure there are some problems like installing software, driver and game updates etc. that might not be that simple. Steam and Origin (and Uplay should have update function in the near future) handle game updates pretty much transparently and also GPU driver updates are starting to get automatic or they can be done with Windows Update. But if someone sets the system up and you just have to use it? This is why I really like the idea of Steambox.

There will still be those that will not get one just because it's a PC - no matter how simple or easy to use it is. I've successfully converted two people into PC gamers. This was done by selling my old system to them and both were fully setup for use. According to them they are not going back to consoles.

@Gegglington @olavinto I did not really mean just the controller but the whole SteamOS, Steambox and the fact that they are trying to combine the best of both consoles and PCs. Valve is actually trying to change the whole indrusty and lift Linux up as a gaming platform. So it's not just about gaming, it could also change the PC indrusty over the coming years and create some very needed competition for Microsoft on the desktop OS market.

Oculus Rift is an interesting innovation too for sure and it could be partly included to this package since Valve is one of the developers already backing it up.

Combine all of these and I don't really see anything else that comes even close.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> True but I don't know if we can really say at this point what will be it's target audience as it's not on the market or even marketed much yet.

I think that it would be foolish from Valve to market Steambox just for PC gamers but as a new contender on the console front as well. But there are still many unknown factors in it like is it upgradable, hardware and software suppport how many publishers are backing it up and so on. It's just been released and me/us, the people who follow the latest technologies are the prime audience at this time.

I like to build my PCs myself and still will and I also don't like to play with pads so most likely I will not buy a Steambox (will try SteamOS though). And in any case it will probably take some time before I can get one from here, in Finland.

lol I'd prefer this to a controller with analog sticks. And even then I'm sure there is a analog mode where it will act like analog sticks if you want. I was going to buy a modded 360 controller where the right stick is replaced with a trackball but I won't have to do that now. I like where things are going with the controller. I just hope its long term gaming comfortable because people will be holding this thing for hours.

I like the precision it gives. With a standard controller you wouldn't hit the broad side of a barn without aim assist on in competitive online.

I think the controller alone will make the SteamBox succeed. This controller is what I'm talking about when I talk about innovation. Analog sticks are good, but they do not have very good precision, the steam controller increases precision to practically mouse level. THAT is what innovation is, making something that already exists better, without it being gimmicky trash. Regular game pads weren't that good for RTS, or FPS games, now they can be.

<< LINK REMOVED >> And that is why you fail. Because you gauge all PCs and consoles based on their power. I actually prefer my PS1 to any current console and my current PC because the games on it were awesome. The graphics look like minecraft by todays standards and the controls were terrible but the stories were the best. Most games today are generic linear boring pieces of shit. I'll take my PS1 over than any day. I could easily sell my Xbox right now but I will never get rid of my PS1.

The only games I can think of right now over the last console cycle are Dark Souls and Witcher 1 and 2, most of the rest were merely decent. If that.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That is unfortunate. I was playing the NES Final Fantasy games over the summer and gameplay wise they are still worlds ahead of most modern games with their linear gameplay and null stories.

Bioshock Infinite was a breath of fresh air for me. A game that wasn't action and graphics orientated but world and story orientated. I loved it.

Most modern games can't hold a candle to older games. And I feel myself growing further and further from gaming every year as a result.

Heres an idea.

Make it so the outer edges of the track pad are designed so they will continually be going in that direction, but only when it reaches those edges. Otherwise it just works like a normal track pad.

Or alternatively, make it so in order to keep moving one direction you can click on track pad in that direction.
