The Steam Controller in action

Valve releases video demonstrating new controller handling games like Portal 2, Civilization V, and Counter-Strike.

Valve released a video today showing how the Steam Controller will work. It is the first time Valve has shown the controller in action following its announcement late last month.

In the video, a Valve employee demonstrates how the controller works for a variety of games, including Portal 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Papers, Please; and Civilization V. Check out the full video below.

Additional demonstrational videos, featuring footage from third-party developers, will be released in the future, Valve said.

The controller featured in the video is the same version that will ship this year to 300 Steam users as part of the Steam Machines beta.

The Steam Controller will work with all past, present, and future games on Steam, including those that were not built with controller support. Valve can achieve this by "fooling" the older games into thinking they are being played with mouse and keyboard.

The input is the first mainstream controller to feature haptic feedback. It also features dual circular trackpads that replace traditional thumbsticks. These trackpads are clickable, turning the entire surface into a button. The Steam Controller will be available alongside Steam Machines in 2014.

i have to say it looks smooth but in the case of shooters we all know what happens when you get scared...thumbs turn to jelly and all game pads become unfathomable...then we look down at it with the just got tea-baged face...

all in all this looks good but all the video demonstrations cant tell you how it feels...cant wait to buy it

<< LINK REMOVED >> FPS on this controller is about the same as on PS3 or Xbox. It's been proven that playing with a mouse is better.

Although Valve is great, like many 'jack of all trades' type of things, they end up sucking.

If I wanna game on my PC, I'll use a keyboard and mouse. If I wanna game in the living room, a traditional gamepad will do. This sadly has no place.

A Wiimote and nunchuck would have been better for mouse emulation.

@West123 @King9999 There's SF4, SFxT, Divekick, and KOF13. There will likely be more in the future. I imagine the Steam box will let you use other controllers, but I don't think it's good to design your main pad without any consideration for the games that won't work well with it. IMO, the controller should be a "one-size fits all" kind of deal.

Note that's only one genre that the controller might not be suitable for. There may be others.

<< LINK REMOVED >> There's Mortal Kombat too. But have to agree this controller will suck on fighting games and for racing games for sure. For fighting you need one these: arcade stick or good digital d-pad (dualshock) and for racing steering wheel (simulation) or at least analogue stick.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Because a lot of PC and MAC games don't recognize external controllers. This controller has built in software that allows it to trick a PC or Mac game into thinking "IT" it self is a keyboard or mouse. As some games require you to have to download other programs to use an Xbox or PlayStation controller. This is just an easy way to eliminate all the hassle.

For the mainly mouse based games it seems very convenient but games with more complicated controls would probably take some serious getting used to, and many developers will likely be modeling their controls either around traditional controllers or mouse and keyboard so that may be an issue.

I still don't completely know what to expect from the Steam Box but the idea of simplifying or eliminating the obstacles and inconveniences of PC gaming for us less tech savvy/cheaper computer game lovers keeps me very optimistic.

He might as well be playing with two trackballs instead of pads. Please show us the real controller.

As anyone with more than half a brain feared, its just two trackpads, woefully inadequate for the task and god help the thumb skin of anyone using this abomination for more than half an hour. My only hope, it doesn't cause more games to have woefully inadquate ports in regards to the vastly superior keyboard+mouse controls.

all the buttons in the middle are pointless... way too far to reach them, also you would be forced to move your thumb, loosing the "stick"...

They tried to copy Marty McFly's hover-board design for the controller, but ended up with this

i like the look of this pad. console gamepads are so limited in what they can do (dont get me wrong they work extremely well with some games). playing an fps with one after using a mouse and keyboard, is so frustrating! it lessens my enjoyment and feeling of immersion. because of this there are loads of games that don't translate that well to consoles and loads that never get released, its about time somebody came up with a solution to fix this.

I hope it feels much better than it looks on this video.

The two major reasons I avoid playing on my PC are: 1) mouse; 2) keyboard. If they manage to offer a better interface/device/solution, I'm all up for using it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You can get gamepads for PC too. And even use an Xbox 360 controller with it just fine. Logitech controllers (for example) also have pretty much the same layout as PS Dual Shock controllers. Get one and use it with Steam Big Picture mode and your all set?
