The Steam Controller in action

Valve releases video demonstrating new controller handling games like Portal 2, Civilization V, and Counter-Strike.

Valve released a video today showing how the Steam Controller will work. It is the first time Valve has shown the controller in action following its announcement late last month.

In the video, a Valve employee demonstrates how the controller works for a variety of games, including Portal 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Papers, Please; and Civilization V. Check out the full video below.

Additional demonstrational videos, featuring footage from third-party developers, will be released in the future, Valve said.

The controller featured in the video is the same version that will ship this year to 300 Steam users as part of the Steam Machines beta.

The Steam Controller will work with all past, present, and future games on Steam, including those that were not built with controller support. Valve can achieve this by "fooling" the older games into thinking they are being played with mouse and keyboard.

The input is the first mainstream controller to feature haptic feedback. It also features dual circular trackpads that replace traditional thumbsticks. These trackpads are clickable, turning the entire surface into a button. The Steam Controller will be available alongside Steam Machines in 2014.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It is fully customization and can be changed to anything. The controller buttons just give keyboard key inputs so that it works with any game and the game doesn't need to recognize or support a controller for it to work.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yes, Xpadder is a decent program but it still isn't perfect. Valves solution will be much more full features and flushed out due to their resources. Also the gamepad from Valve appears to support mouse inputs far better than a 360 controller and third party software.

I'd rather stick with the DualShock and 360/Xbone controllers.

The first person shooter segment was no faster than a standard ps3/360 controller.. plus he stopped to line up his shot as well.

I sometimes feel like less of a person, but I am perfectly happy using a standard 360 gamepad for FPS’s on my PC, unless I’m playing competitively, it really doesn’t matter.

I don’t think the goal was to make it a good gamepad for FPS’s, I think it’s more about strategy games, point and click adventures etc that are so hard to do without a mouse. For that, I will gladly buy it. I suppose they wanted to make it generic as possible, but I wonder if maybe developing 3 distinctly designed controllers for platforming, fps, and kbm emulation would have been better. Controller bloat is already something we are use to, I wouldn’t mind buying 3 separate types if they were better suited.

I’m also interested as to whether they considered footpads, greatly underused I think and would give you a few more buttons and some more physical interaction on the couch.

They have default setting for keyboard emulation mode, but that one is not sure to have an appropriate setting for all game by default, unless someone took time to create a default binding.

While game who already have xinput mapping quite possibly simply have a more direct remapping on the controller, while dev who release new game are able to specifically tailor to the controller. These last two are almost certain to be perfectly binding by default for the majority of the player.

Looks pretty good. Probably not as good as conventional controllers or kb&m for a lot of games, but kicking back on the sofa for some civ5 and other kb&m games sounds good to me! If the price is reasonable ($50-70) I will pick one up when it launches.

Would love to hear more about how the haptic feedback systems and touch screen menus work specifically for this controller. Can you customize which functions you want on a touch screen menu? (I realize they haven't implemented that in this prototype yet but it would be good to learn more about how it will work).

I'm willing to make sacrifices to accuracy in controls for couch gaming (ie, playing fps games on a 360 controller is fine for single player) so I can see myself really liking this.

Meh.. Valve should redeem itself for this thing while there is time, and focus on Half-life 3 before it becomes a Diablo 3 case.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Actually, when I think about it.. it might not be so bad. When you think "track pad" you normally think of the one on a laptop, which you usually control with your index finger. But when you try using your thumb on an imaginary surface, your thumb has more strength and comfort that it might not actually be so bad.

Hm, I'll have to try it out before judging.

well, my mouse sensitivity is pretty high, mainly so i can make small movements for a big effect. An increase in sensitivity would mean the same for this; you would only have to move your thumb in smaller movements to move around the screen faster, meaning the problem of multiple strokes, which i agree would be terrible, is negated.

Hmm. In practice it looks about as good as a standard/360 controller; better in some cases, worse in some cases. It still doesn't look like something I'd want to play PC games on - or something that I'd spend money on.

I liked when he swipes the trackpad to throw the box. I think you can't naturally do that with thumb sticks.

The trackpads are just much more precise than thumb sticks, too.

That controller blows. Trackpads, awkward buttons, and trackpads. Really. Trackpads? There's a reason people use a mouse. It's cause trackpads suck for gaming.

@SkaiNett Trackpads may suck for pc gaming, and I agree. But for console gaming, I can see them being better than the usual controllers.

Besides, you haven't even tried them, so don't judge yet.
