The Steam Controller in action

Valve releases video demonstrating new controller handling games like Portal 2, Civilization V, and Counter-Strike.

Valve released a video today showing how the Steam Controller will work. It is the first time Valve has shown the controller in action following its announcement late last month.

In the video, a Valve employee demonstrates how the controller works for a variety of games, including Portal 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Papers, Please; and Civilization V. Check out the full video below.

Additional demonstrational videos, featuring footage from third-party developers, will be released in the future, Valve said.

The controller featured in the video is the same version that will ship this year to 300 Steam users as part of the Steam Machines beta.

The Steam Controller will work with all past, present, and future games on Steam, including those that were not built with controller support. Valve can achieve this by "fooling" the older games into thinking they are being played with mouse and keyboard.

The input is the first mainstream controller to feature haptic feedback. It also features dual circular trackpads that replace traditional thumbsticks. These trackpads are clickable, turning the entire surface into a button. The Steam Controller will be available alongside Steam Machines in 2014.

I'm very intrigued by the seemingly precise controls. I've always preferred kb+m for FPSs and games like Civilization (for obvious reasons) but these trackpads look like they could be very responsive and precise. Outside of most FPSs, I'd also be excited to try out this controller with a game like The Swapper, Terraria or Intrusion 2 that blend traditional "gamepad" controls with a mouse's precise targeting.

What I'd be worried about now, oddly enough, is "traditional" gamepad games. I'm finding it hard to imagine a fighting game (Skullgirls, my favorite on Steam) or a 2D platformer (Spelunky, Rogue Legacy, Deadlight, Bastion) working well with this layout. I'm guessing you can map buttons to certain "pie slices" on the touchpads, but that would remove the tactile feeling of the button beneath your finger. Who knows, maybe it would work.

Anyway, this is an interesting controller. While I have no interest in a Steam box personally (as I have my PC already hooked up to my HDTV), this controller is something I could see myself using on a regular basis; should it work as well as they are saying it does.

I've never been a fan of track pads... and I'm not seeing much difference controlling a mouse cursor with this versus a joystick on a traditional gamepad. Perhaps it's just something you need to feel for yourself.

I'm pretty interested it looks good but I am skeptical on how it would work with CS though because CS always seemed like a 99.9% keyboard and mouse only game. Now for casual gaming I would deffinetly check this out. Either way I am excited to get this thing!

Looks good, always keen to try new tech.

I'd like to try one out. I could see this as good for sitting on the couch. But i'm certainly not getting a steam box for one. Sure we will be able to get something like it on a PC if it actually is any good.

I just found out that Don't Starve added controller support. I'd like to see a game like that used with the Steam Controller (and see how long the player can survive whilst using it!) When I heard that PS4 controllers would work with PCs I think I'd prefer to play fighting games with that one. For mouse controlled games or games that require precise scroll functions that can't be nailed with an analog stick it would be nice to have the Steam Controller.

When I first saw the pictures of this controller I was skeptical, but seeing it in action makes me think it could be good. I'm not sure about the button placements though and I'd like to see a game like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter to see those buttons in action.

Sliding your thumbs back and forth just seem like a hassle when a thumb stick would only require you to hold your thumb in one direction. Also, I heard this steam box doesn't have a disc slot

When I first saw this I was so disappointed but the more I hear the more I can see Valve trying to bridge the gap between Console and PC gaming. I love keyboard and mouse, you can't beat it BUT I like gaming from my couch more! Hopefully this will create a more comfortable alternative to mouse and keyboard and give my aching wrists a break!

I admire Valve for doing something new. For taking the risk and attempting to become intuitive. Unfortunately people don't like foreign things. They like stuff they are familiar with, in this case, the standard xbox/ps gamepad. I hope this doesn't effect Valve's sales and they do okay with this because they've had the balls to try.

<< LINK REMOVED >> imagine playing fast paced games, racing games and dynamic fps with it then give your opinion, Valve is great but it's not meant that everything they do to be great or innovative and having PS4 and X1 out there with million users it's a little difficult to challenge them directly, you have to be careful because since 2000 they beat every competition

<< LINK REMOVED >> I admire your honesty, it's very easy to point and click with a mouse and using a keyboard to move seems very primitive to me. Controllers are just more immersive, it takes more skill to use a controller, but it's far better than typing at a desk.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Rofl, it takes more skill to use a controller. That's classic. If you've ever seen the god awful defaults for some games, like Battlefield 4 (where the controls are broken and some of them CAN'T be remapped yet), you'd say otherwise.

Or War Thunder. Try playing that shit on a controller. It's not doable unless you want to omit button mapping for airbrakes or landing gear, each gear having 3 different button mappings.

@Ioannis Demis Denton left for dead not that much but portal and half life are great, half life changed the way of playing a fps forever and Portal brought fresh ideas, you don't need to shoot bullets to enjoy a game

valve does great things but this is so baaad, how are you supposed to play racing games? Action games? Fast paced games? And what are you supposed to do in a fps when you have a lot of enemies in front of you, you have to aim first, then shoot cause' you move the camera with the same analog that you shoot, good for novice mode maybe?

I love Steam but I have two problems:

1. This controller concept is a massive risk. I know. The bigger the risk, the bigger the reward. But this feels like too much too fast to be ready for prime time. The last thing they want to happen is for people to say "Yeah I would get one of those Steamboxes...but that controller..."

2. It isn't especially clear what demand these Steamboxes would be aiming to fill. Who is their target market? Is this market large enough for Valve to potentially flourish in the console business? Valve can't just walk in and say "We intend to sell to all gamers." That's a great way to end up getting cracked on the head by Microsoft, Sony, and even Nintendo. They MUST meet a market demand that has yet to be filled if this has a chance at working.

I wish them the best but I'm still scratching my head on this one.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think they're target market are gamers who are not PC fanatics, such as myself. Which is definitely large enough that if even a minor percent try it out, they will have succeeded. I really don't think they are trying to compete with Nintendo/Microsoft/Sony. I see it more as trying to expand Steam to attract even more users. My first reaction to the controller was "that looks really weird". Then again, I heard the same thing about the original Xbox controller, so that doesn't mean much. The idea that they're trying to create a controller that can naturally map any PC game (as well as create custom button mappings) is enticing enough for me to want to try the controller out.

Looks like an interesting new idea, but I'm not convinced on how well it will perform for shooters. When watching the Counter-Strike portion, all I could think about was that if I aimed that slowly in multiplayer, I'd be dead. Any other type of game, I think it should be fine.
