The Scorpion King hits GameCube, GBA

Universal Interactive Studios has released further information on its upcoming The Scorpion King games for the Nintendo GameCube and Game Boy Advance. The two titles will be spin-offs from the upcoming The Scorpion King feature film starring The Rock, but they will both have different stories and gameplay styles. The GameCube game is the story of the Scorpion King's first adventure, which puts the players in the middle of a quest to thwart an evil lord's plans to raise an army of beasts. The combat-oriented 3D adventure game will let players wield a variety of combination attacks as they travel through ancient Egyptian environments. The GameCube game is being developed by Point of View Software, which has previously worked on both Ready 2 Rumble boxing titles and games in the NFL Blitz series for Midway, among other projects.

The Game Boy Advance game, titled The Scorpion King: Sword of Osiris and being developed by WayForward Technologies, is a side-scrolling action-adventure game that features a story that begins after the conclusion of the upcoming film. The GBA game, shown in the screenshots above, will be released alongside the film in Q2 2002, while the GameCube game will arrive in Q3 2002.

"The Scorpion King video games build upon the strength of Universal Studios' Mummy franchise and leverage the popularity of The Rock in the genre of interactive entertainment," said Jim Wilson, president of Universal Interactive. "The games will appeal to fans of The Rock and The Mummy/Scorpion King franchise, as well as to hard-core action-adventure gamers."
