The Rock Gets Excited About Rampage Reviews, Upsets Doom's Twitter Account

"And remember, I starred in the stinker Doom."

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's latest movie, Rampage, has arrived in theaters. It's a loose adaptation of the classic game of the same name, and while that may sound like a recipe for another bad movie, it's actually quite entertaining, as our Rampage review states. The Rock seems pleased to have possibly cracked the video game movie curse, though he's upset the people behind Doom's Twitter account in the process of sharing that excitement.

Score aggregator Rotten Tomatoes tweeted to point out that Rampage's average review score at the time (53%) would put it ahead of every video game movie in history. The Rock took note of this, tweeting, "Wow! Very cool Rampage news! Not pointing to the scoreboard yet, but it seems we may have finally broken the dreaded video game curse. And remember, I starred in the stinker Doom so I have lived thy curse."

Cut to Doom's Twitter account, which either didn't take kindly to The Rock taking a shot like that or just reminding people that the Doom movie exists.

While the Doom movie wasn't very good, things for the franchise have looked better since then. The latest game, 2016's simply titled Doom, was a stellar first-person shooter, offering a surprisingly engaging single-player campaign. A PS4 Pro and Xbox One X update was released recently that makes those versions look especially nice. And late last year, we got a Nintendo Switch port that actually played quite well (albeit without some of the visual flair of other platforms).

As for Rampage, it's out now in theaters. Our review says it's "dumb as hell, but it's also pretty dang entertaining." It's also got The Rock doing The Rock things, which on its own might make it worth the price of admission for many people.

Getting excited over a 53% approval rating is kinda sad. Though I guess it IS more than half.

Oh come on, DOOM, you can't say that the movie was a pinnacle of game-based movies. It literally ignored the idea of Hell in favor of a VIRUS, they were more mutant-zombies than actual demons, and about the only thing they actually carried over plot-wise from the game was the fact it was on Mars. Dwayne and Karl were really the only things worth watching in that thing!

I actually liked DOOM and I enjoyed Rock's performance in it.

I haven't seen Rampage yet, but I have to say I wouldn't really classify it as a video game movie. It's very, very loosely based on the game, sharing only the name and the type of monsters that appear. In the game the monsters are the main protagonists and they are former humans mutated into monsters. George is brown. Ralf doesn't have wings. The only story in the game is that you move from city to city, destroying and eating everything and anything in your path while humanity desperately attempts to stop you. That's it. Make a movie out of that and then you can call it a video game movie.

This movie is based on a videogame? Interesting, first time I watched the trailer, I assumed this was part of the monster universe (godzila, king kong, etc)

@gleencross:

The game itself was loosely based on that whole monster universe genre, with the twist of you were playing as the monster.

So I guess that makes this a movie based on a game based on a movie!

@jonhuggs: that's not a movie based solely on a video game of the same name. it is an original story about video game characters having the ability to inhabit other video games that isn't their own.

"dumb as hell, but it's also pretty dang entertaining."

Can never decide if that quotes a review of the movie or its star!

Fun to watch, critics will always tear video game films apart. Enjoy them for what they are.

The movie Doom wasent the best but having The Rock in it dint help, nice person, but he sucks has an actor like most WWE actors they suck, Batista was the best so far, hope he never comes back, having the honor to be Doom guy should not have been for him, same goes for Cena and Duke Nukem its gonna suck specially beacause of Cena. Ryan Reynolds was the obvious choice!

@nibbin1191: Well, Batista did a good job in Blade Runner. Didn't watched his short movie related to blade runner yet, but in the movie itself, he was fine. And the original comment, I agree with that, you can't expect much from wrestling stars. It's the exact same of Arnold, Stallone and others, they are there just there for the charisma factor, nothing else. But the difference is a guy like Arnold is so damn charismatic that even bad movies ended up digestible because of his presence. The rock is very charismatic, but not on this level, he alone don't save a movie.

I didn't think "Doom" was that bad... I wouldn't go as far as calling it "fantastic" or anything like that, but certainly watchable and a million times better than that Angelina Jolie rubbish.

@CybaCowboy: The best part of the movie was the FPS part near the end.

Judging by the trailers, Rampage looks like a fun movie, my only issue is Ralph (I assuming that's who the Wolf is supposed to be) having wings and being able to fly, dunno why they did that.

RT is a bloody joke that seemingly has little to no connection to the average cinema goer, they like and the general viewers don't like and vice-versa.
