The Phantom Pain PC Release Date Moved Up, Preorders Come With Ground Zeroes

Plus, everyone who buys the game on Steam will receive some bonus content.

[UPDATE] Konami has also announced that Metal Gear Online, the multiplayer mode for The Phantom Pain, will not be available at launch. Get all the details here.

Konami had some big news to share today regarding the PC edition of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. First, the game's release date has been moved up, from September 15 to September 1, to match the console release date.

"We initially did not think it would be possible to get such an epic game out onto PC in time for launch alongside its console counterparts, but all involved have worked diligently to meet the demands of our PC consumers," Konami president Tomotada Tashiro said in a statement.

No Caption Provided

The Japanese publisher also announced today that everyone who preorders The Phantom Pain on Steam will receive the 2014 prologue, Ground Zeroes, for free. On top of that, everyone who buys the PC edition--not just preorders it--will receive a behind-the-scenes collector's video and documentary. They'll also get a "Venom Snake" emblem and something called the Mother Base Staff DLC.

The PC edition of The Phantom Pain supports resolution up to 4K. Konami also writes on the game's Steam page that The Phantom Pain for PC will have more graphics options than Ground Zeroes and will support Steam trading cards, as well as custom soundtracks.

One thing that's not locked down, however, is Windows 10 support.

"While we can't confirm official support by launch, we're looking into this for post-launch patches if necessary," Konami said. "However from all accounts, the basic performance should be to par."

In other PC news, Konami and Nvidia have teamed up to give away copies of The Phantom Pain with the purchase of select GPUs.

We're expecting more news about The Phantom Pain this week, as Konami is preparing a new, Mother Base-themed gameplay trailer for Gamescom to be released on August 5. What's more, The Phantom Pain is playable for the first time this week at the big-time European gaming show.

According to GameSpot's sources, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima will leave Konami after the game ships next month. Just recently, a Nikkei report exposed the troubling culture inside of Konami.

So glad I refused to pay £25 for a prologue that should have been in the main game, and is now being given away for free on xbox live, as was the case last month or so on PSN. Absolute rip off!

To echo others, what if I already have Ground Zeroes? Also, do I still get a copy if I got my Phantom Pain through an Nvidia code? It's still the steam version, and technically pre-ordered, since I don't have it yet...

I knew it.... paying full price on that demo felt harsh now they are giving it away in a preorder? How about the steadfast fans that actually bought the demo? Another copy? Great?

@ember_to_flame: It's your own fault for being taken at that price. Be a smarter gamer and wait for reviews before you drop $40 bucks on a 2 hour game.

@Random_Virus: Yeah, I walked right into that one. Just that Ive played every mgs. And they are among my favorite so I just preorder without even thinking. But now I know, everything is not what it seems anymore, ever since order 1886 and now this demo came, one must be careful before buying.

@ember_to_flame: Metal Gear games have not ceased to impress and be of at least good quality. You couldn't have known. Even Ground Zero was good in spite of being so short.. just not worth that much money.

@Myron117: It wasnt bad, what people hated the most about 1886 were that is was super short gameplay, 60% or so were cinematics that you couldn't jump over. Story and looks were pretty damn great if you ask me, but it felt more like a movie then a game a very expensive short game.

I got TPP free with my purchase of a 970gtx card, does this count as a pre-order so I can get the bonuses (mainly Ground Zeroes) for free? TPP is already showing up in my Steam Library.

Should be able to max this out at 1440p 60fps on a single 980ti; Ground Zeroes can't get up to 60 at 4k so I imagine this'll be much the same.

I saw your comment on a PS3 game, either you're a console peasant or liar. You're a same guy with another avatar on PCG, right? It's not the first time.

Windows 10 is at core the same as Windows 8. Haven't had any issues so far. As for the 4K resolution support on PC... do you even news, bro?

@xsonicchaos: Having a game at 4K and having all of the textures/items in the game that can take advantage of 4K are two different things.

Trying running a game from 2002 at 4K and there will be basically no difference except not needing as much anti-aliasing. Even games from a year ago designed for 1080p or like 1440p won't see that much of an increase because the textures aren't good enough to take advantage of 4K.

You can't create pixels where there are no pixels.

Unless a developer added overkill to their game and actually added game assets above the standard it won't make a difference. In this case Kojima is clearly adding textures to Phantom Pain that can take advantage of the higher 4K resolution. Which is why they mention it.

@Dannystaples14: I know what you mean, but nowhere is specified of such technical details or any statement that goes that deep. The article is about support for 4K resolution, no more no less. You are right, however, current graphic cards have the capability to render higher resolutions with ease, so it would be foolish not to make your game look better. But if you really want to be that technical, not all assets in the game have the same resolution.

I'm confident this will be a quality and optimised version of the game on PC, just like Ground Zeroes.

Metal Gear Solid is really one of the only things that makes me regret not having a console. In fact just Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, since the others all emulate beautifully.

I haven't played through 4 yet, and I'm one of those people who just can't play/watch through a series in the wrong order, so I can't play this until I've played Metal Gear Solid 4 (-.-')

I was glad to see that GZ ran good on PC, especially after MGS2 had one of the worst ports in history of gaming.

Also, as primarily a console gamer, I'm glad Metal Gear made it's way to PC so you guys can enjoy it too. Of course, there is always emulation but still, a proper PC version is always better to have :P

I beleive BAK failure pc edition teach them not to miss with or delay the release. it is not a good ideas or bussines somehow.

it is better to relases the game in all platform at once, to avoid spoiler.......

We also encourage the good idea for give MGS GZ free edition with preoder+++.

I have high hope that MGS V will have no issues at all.

As much as I'd like to get this on PC I have GZ on PS4 and want to trasnfer anything from that over to TPP so I'll be getting it on PS4 but this is good news to PC players though without a doubt.

Also regarding Windows 10 support I honestly don't think you'd have too much to worry about. I've been playing games on Windows 10 and most of them run fine even with mods enabled. Only exception to this was Diablo 3 where there is a small but noticable drop in performance.

I want the game but I'll feel really bad about paying for it as the money would be going to Konami and I'd rather give my money to Kojima and his team instead. :(

Great news, I would be worried about them rushing it, but it's two weeks that were likely only there to make consoles more appealing, but since Konami makes more off it's PC releases than Xbox it only made sense

@vegettosonlab: Thankfully, PC ports as diabolical as AK are more of the exception these days. Yes, AC Unity was pretty bad-- but it was bad on all platforms, suggesting that rather than it being a piss-poor porting job, it was just a massively underdeveloped game engine.

It seems pretty obvious why AK turned out the way it did -- they already admitted that it was a herculian task trying to get it to work in any playable state on consoles, so it seems they decided that the PC version will suffer immensely in order to focus on that goal, by committing pretty much all of the resources to the PS and XB releases. Fobbing off the PC porting to some evidently hugely ill-equipped outside studio.
