The Phantom Pain PC Release Date Moved Up, Preorders Come With Ground Zeroes

Plus, everyone who buys the game on Steam will receive some bonus content.

[UPDATE] Konami has also announced that Metal Gear Online, the multiplayer mode for The Phantom Pain, will not be available at launch. Get all the details here.

Konami had some big news to share today regarding the PC edition of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. First, the game's release date has been moved up, from September 15 to September 1, to match the console release date.

"We initially did not think it would be possible to get such an epic game out onto PC in time for launch alongside its console counterparts, but all involved have worked diligently to meet the demands of our PC consumers," Konami president Tomotada Tashiro said in a statement.

The Japanese publisher also announced today that everyone who preorders The Phantom Pain on Steam will receive the 2014 prologue, Ground Zeroes, for free. On top of that, everyone who buys the PC edition--not just preorders it--will receive a behind-the-scenes collector's video and documentary. They'll also get a "Venom Snake" emblem and something called the Mother Base Staff DLC.

The PC edition of The Phantom Pain supports resolution up to 4K. Konami also writes on the game's Steam page that The Phantom Pain for PC will have more graphics options than Ground Zeroes and will support Steam trading cards, as well as custom soundtracks.

One thing that's not locked down, however, is Windows 10 support.

"While we can't confirm official support by launch, we're looking into this for post-launch patches if necessary," Konami said. "However from all accounts, the basic performance should be to par."

In other PC news, Konami and Nvidia have teamed up to give away copies of The Phantom Pain with the purchase of select GPUs.

We're expecting more news about The Phantom Pain this week, as Konami is preparing a new, Mother Base-themed gameplay trailer for Gamescom to be released on August 5. What's more, The Phantom Pain is playable for the first time this week at the big-time European gaming show.

According to GameSpot's sources, Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima will leave Konami after the game ships next month. Just recently, a Nikkei report exposed the troubling culture inside of Konami.

Curious if the free copy I got with my MSI 980Ti Gaming 6G will be considered a "pre order" as long as I preload on Steam. Getting it free via PSplus was nice, but I would much prefer playing through it again on PC

@stryfeforlife: I can only speak for Arkham, but the game code with 970 did not get me the Steam pre-order stuff.

@stryfeforlife: I do know that the codes you get from graphics card deals or codes you get from the box of a physical PC cop or those bought on third part sites like GMG are seen as "retail" copies and may not qualify under Konami's guidelines.

I don't know if Konami will care about the distinction, I just know that Steam does differentiate between games bought on Steam directly and games activated on Steam, but bought elsewhere.

They forgot to add this :

"As a result of the updated timing, console versions of METAL GEAR ONLINE will go live on October 6th, with the PC version set to release in January 2016."

@Dari23: Not a bad thing. Multiplayer IMO isn't needed for an MGS game.

@shezmen: They may have announced it a few days earlier than they originally planned, but they can't finish a game 2 weeks ahead of schedule on a day's notice.

Sounds fishy. Too many giveaways for pre-order and release date pushed up. I won't be surprised if the game won't even boot up for the first few weeks. I have already learnt my lesson with MKX and Batman AK.

@twisted_outlaw: And Warner Bros was the only one releasing bad PC ports at launch? Ever heard of Ubisoft? EA? What makes you think Konami won't do the same?

@vigariox: Ground Zeroes is one of the best console to PC ports there is, so makes sense to expect quality from the next game from the same studio, no?

I got my free code for buying the Zotac 980ti AMP! card. However, since I had to file a paypal dispute with Steam over them not giving me a refund for Batman they blocked my account from adding any new games. Thanks Steam! This is the treatment honest people that want to support game companies get. So I'll be pirating this game and all future games that are locked into Steam from now on.

@wookiegr: Justify it however you want, yoou are still advocating something illegal that just hurts the game industry in general. You are not being a "freedom fighter", you are being a degenerate pirate who doesn't want to pay for games. No need to try to pretend otherwise.

@fedor: No, pretty clear cut. I asked for a refund on Arhkam Knight, they denied it, I filed a dispute with paypal, Steam locked my account. Paypal investigates and approved my refund because the game was defective and taken down for sale with no access to PC add-ons or patches in a timely manner. Now I plan to escalate the matter with the FTC and Consumer Affairs to be allowed the right to buy and play games again..

Or I can just pirate the games from now on, what do you prefer?

@StHapns247: Sure, punish them by not buying their games in future. But don't take away the efforts of the people who worked so hard on this game by pirating it. Totally unfair.

Well that settles it. I was in two minds whether to get this on the X1 or wait for the PC version and now the decision has been made dead simple.
