The Next Set of NES Classic Editions Are Being Handled Differently by ThinkGeek

ThinkGeek tries a different approach.

After giving a few away and promising it would have more to sell soon, ThinkGeek has unveiled its plans for selling its new allotment of NES Classic Editions.

Demand for the system, which plays a limited selection of NES games, has far outpaced demand since its launch in November. Stores have been unable to keep them in stock for long, as ThinkGeek acknowledges on its store page: "Here's the deal: more of you want NES Classics than we have to sell. We want to do right by you, so we're going to make this as fair as we can."

No Caption Provided

Its solution is essentially a randomized lotto to determine who gets to buy the system. The process for participating is simple: log in or create a ThinkGeek account, add a Classic Edition to your wishlist, and then cross your fingers. The store will begin randomly selecting people who have one on their wishlist today and send them an email with a code that can be used to buy one. The codes are only valid for 24 hours--if one isn't used by then, someone else will get a shot.

This will go on until ThinkGeek runs through its stock of Classic Editions. The site didn't offer any indication of how many units it has to sell or when they would ship by. The first emails went out for those who have already signed up, with another batch set to go out at 10 AM ET on Tuesday, December 13.

Preorders for the Classic Edition sold out well ahead of launch, with those that were available on launch day also going quickly. This resulted in a resale market that saw the $60 system going for upwards of $200 on the secondhand market. Nintendo has promised additional systems will continue to be made available during the holiday shopping season.

Surely the right way is to mass produce them that way the people buying them to sell them at 200 are getting shafted.

This is not worth the amount of money it's going for. If you're that desperate to play these games (almost all of which simply don't hold up despite how legendary they might have once been) get the rom. If you must have that authentic feel get a usb nes controller to go with it.

I have yet to see a successful business plan that includes "Let's leave an EASY BILLION USD on the table, which is not guaranteed to be recoverable later."

@Pyrosa: Sounds no different than gamers spending money on digital downloads that can never be recovered ever again.

@bermil: it's the old Nintendo strategy of artificially keeping a product scarce to whip consumers into a buying frenzy. It's cheap, manipulative and underhanded, but fanboys will eat it up. They've been doing it with the wii and amiibo and other ninitendo products.

@bmanva: exactly, crap like this just rewards poor behavior. I feel sorry for the people that got "in line" first. Imagine being #105 out of the first run of 100 units and not getting one, and waiting patiently for the next run of 100, only to find out you might not get one because they "randomizing" it.

I was given an original NES about a year ago with Mario and a few other games, I played it for a couple of hours and never played it again. This NES classic is a cool idea and I will pick one up when I see it, but anyone who pays more than retail is crazy in fact I would argue that $60 is crazy. It is not that fun anymore and very basic. That being said, for a short fun factor and just to have it, I like the idea. Other than that I bet most will not play this thing long and it will just collect dust.

you've gotta be kidding me!!!! This completely outrageous that retailers have to even do this to try to sell this fake NES fairly!!!! What the heck is Nintendo doing to their fans!!! There should be a ton of these cheap emulators with fixed rom set available for purchase!!! Screw Nintendo if they're going to continue this practice of shipping minimal amounts of product at a time to create fake buzz! People think that Nintendo is always trying to innovate but in reality they are just as greedy and money hungry as all other major Video game publishers/ makers!! The Wii was just a slightly overclocked Gamecube and was sold for the same price as what a new console would sell because of there gimmick of a Wii remote, and Nintendo pulled the same stunt with supply and demand of that system too!! And then with those stupid Amiibos!!!! Nintendo made millions on those useless things and did the same thing with not having enough supply to meet demand. Nintendo does not give a crap about its fan base and the consumer just as much as all the other gaming companies/publishers!! It's all about making as much money as possible with little to no regards to the consumer/ loyal fan!! The same exact thing will occur with the switch, not enough supply to meet demand, new gimmick so they can sell it at higher price with using weaker hardware specs to maximize profit, and you'll have to purchase many other accessories to get the full benefit out of the console/ games, multiple/ different controllers, Amiibos, etc.

"Demand for the system [...] has far outpaced demand"? That doesn't seem possible... Demand is growing so fast that it's outpacing itself?

Does it still have a short 2 foot controller cord. If it had wireless controller (can be made cheap these days) I would maybe consider one. And before someone tries to flame me, having a wireless controller would not take away from the nostalgic look.

I've got one and it's not something all that special, I hardly even play it and it's not worth anything more than the £50 I paid, probably better on a pi I think.

@xxdavidxcx87: The day I couldn't get one, launch day, I went home and played super mario all stars on my Wii, after a few minutes of that the "rush" to get a mini nes died big time. Nintendo should have caught the day one hype instead of creating buzz to sell half as many a few months down the line when no one cares anymore.

@Elranzer:

What's there to be salty about? The sentiment is no different that having an old star wars trilogy collection on VHS, while also having the pirated download of the same trilogy in full 1080p on your PC, and suddenly a bluray version comes out. You'll buy it perhaps out of respect, but nothing to be salty over

I'll just stick to my NES emulator because I just don't understand the high demand for the NES Classic.

According to my younger brother who works at Target, They only got 2 consoles in and both sold-out in a matter of minutes.

Why people are buying it? Really some people...

It has sentimental value, it's the game you played as kid (not you, the one complaining, you were probably born 15 years ago tops), but in a modern package. It's cute, nostalgic, it's not expensive, it makes a great gift...

There are plenty of reasons to buy.

I don't like the lotery though. Randomly sending them out does not make it more "fair". If you get to the page first, and there is one available, the fair thing is to let the one that got to it first buy it.

@dariomeznari: Just because it doesn't appeal to you means barely anything. You're 1 out of millions. The other thing is this is free money for nintendo as they make a profit on every copy sold, they just didn't produce enough to satisfy demand yet. They also don't really care if someone buys it, plays it half an hour, then lets it sit collecting dust for 30 years as they have made their money.

@dariomeznari: Eventually demand will be satisfied and there will be loads of these sitting on store shelves collecting dust, but yeah right now that is clearly not the case. Nintendo is quite bad at this supply and demand thing though especially after wii u where they overproduced the console and it sold terribly due to horrible marketing and the system itself is like going from xbox one to xbox one s/minor improvement at best.

I just hope what people are saying is true, these scalpers are the worse (and the people buying from them are no better) but it is getting annoying. They claim to be giving them to retailers during this month, but the Gamestop and Walmart have never been restocked since the release. And the bestbuy/Target are just to far away to even bother! Im hoping to get it online since going out doesnt seem like a reliable option.

Just wait a few months until the fuss dies down and you will be able to buy one from a local store.

Crazy all this nonsense over old games you can just play with emulators.

The mini megadrive is soon to release too so you may as well camp out in the street for one of those as well.

Or, if you don't feel like building up this company's customer list for free, you could just wait a few months when these NES Classics will be sitting in large piles at your nearest Walmart.
