The Next Halo FPS Will Have Split-Screen, Unlike Halo 5

"For any FPS going out forward, we will always have split-screen in."

2015's Halo 5: Guardians did not include any kind of split-screen, something that Microsoft was criticized for. Today, the company confirmed that Halo 6, or whatever the next game in the series is called, will indeed have split-screen support.

No Caption Provided

This was confirmed by 343 Industries executive Bonnie Ross during a speech at DICE 2017. Ross said not including split-screen in Halo 5 was one of the "painful learnings" that Microsoft faced after taking over ownership of the Halo brand from Bungie.

"For any FPS going out forward, we will always have split-screen in," she said.

Ross also said Halo: The Master Chief Collection's rough launch was another "painful learning" for Microsoft. The company previously referred to this as a "black eye" for the developer.

Struggles like this are "incedible painful for the community and for us--and it erodes trust," she said.

Immediately after Halo 5 came out, Halo franchise director Frank O'Connor said the blowback from the game's lack of split-screen support was "huge." It was technically impossible for 343 to add split-screen to Halo 5 through a patch, O'Connor said.

The game's 60 FPS frame rate is partially responsible for this. When 343 made the decision to have Halo 5 run at a locked 60 FPS, the team did so with the understanding that it would create "some issues" and technical impossibilities for the rest of the game.

The number of people who play Halo games via local split-screen is small relative to the total player base, O'Connor explained.

No new Halo FPS games have been announced. Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently suggested the next Halo FPS will not be released this year, which is no big surprise, given that Halo 5 is not even two years old.

More Halo games? Talk about beating a dried out, decrepit husk that used to be a dead horse that while alive was never really any good to begin with.

@repulsive44552: Halo has consistently been one of the best FPS games out there. I'm not really sure what you're talking about. The horse is still alive and well.

@bigwarmy: Good one. Halo is pretty much everything that is wrong with current FPS games which after each sequel some how gets even worse.

@bigwarmy: Speaks for itself. Dead linear levels, heavily scripted combat set pieces, boring, snail/granny 'gameplay', generic melodramatic story and casual mechanics such as regen life. It's a terrible franchise aimed at the lowest common denominator, all the same old shit that's plagued the genre for over a decade, they have all been terrible, including the very first (which is hugely responsible for the current state of FPS).

@repulsive44552: So your only complaint is about the campaign? I agree that the campaign has become dull, but there's a lot more to Halo than just the campaign. The multiplayer is, in my opinion, the best out of any FPS game. It requires the most skill and the most teamwork. While games like COD is all about a player's reaction time, in Halo you have to have consistent aiming, strong team communication, and team-shooting. But if all you care about is the campaign, then that's a little weird but okay fine.

@bigwarmy: The MP is terrible too, the gameplay is slower than a dying granny and also suffers from the games core casual mechanics. It's a terrible FPS through and through.

@repulsive44552: Haha you can have a preference of faster gameplay, but that doesn't make Halo bad. Again, games like COD are faster, but they require much less skill. It's all about reaction time in those games. Halo is a skill game, and it's much more enjoyable to watch.

@bigwarmy: For MP Quake 3 and UT 99, for SP (as well as Co-op), Duke 3D, Doom, Doom 2, Heretic, Hexen1/2, Unreal, Blood, Shadow Warrior, think the last FPS that didn't bore me to tears was the original Far Cry.

@repulsive44552: That's fine that you prefer those games, but I'm not aware of any of those games being on any kind of a professional circuit. Different preferences are fine, but it's not evidence that Halo is a horrible FPS.

Taking it out for Halo 5 was a terrible idea and it seems like everyone knew that except for the developers.

I wonder if they are planning some sort of Master Chief Collection 4k "re-remaster" release to go with the Scorpio launch, including Halo 5 remastered. Wishful thinking of course but the one thing that would absolutely get me to buy it. I can handle Halo remaining console exclusive as long as ALL Halo branded games get a full native 4K/60 treatment.

Anyone who couldn't figure this out after the backlash is a moron. They probably lost millions in profit because of the no split screen decision. People who play Halo aren't in it for the eye candy.

Let's be honest: if you're a real diehard fan of Halo you would have bought the game with or without split screen. I know I did. And so did the people I hang out with, being fans and all. Let's hope Halo 6 isn't held back because of the 1% when we could have had better.

@sladakrobot: Or maybe keep the dynamic resolution from 720p to 1080p... not sure if they'd be able to get 60fps though since that's what was used in halo 5... so yeah, dynamic res and 30fps splitscreen... wait, that'd mean if you and a bud were playing people online who were not using splitscreen, they would either have an advantage at 60fps or would have to drop to 30fps.

Good that they're taking feedback seriously

Though I wouldn't be surprised if splitscreen in Halo 6 ends up being a Scorpio-only feature, after they again try and fail to make it work on the base Xbone hardware.

@gameplayuk: My friend and I have known each other since I was 8 (now I'm 30). Back then he was a gamer who only played WWF/WWE wrestling games on the N64 along with Turok Rage Wars (best N64 shooter of all time imo), Pokemon games on the Gameboy and GTA 3 on the PS2. He stopped buying consoles after the PS2 and stopped gaming altogether.

You know what franchise he plays with me whenever he comes over my place to visit? HALO split-screen (all of the FPS versions). We play for HOURS in free-for-all every time. I always teach him the new mechanics in each new Halo game and he always has a blast. He also likes to play GTA 4 to have fist fights with Bums lol (I haven't introduced him to GTA 5 yet). I didn't bother introducing him to HALO 5 because of *cough cough* no split-screen.

WE CARE ABOUT SPLIT-SCREEN (-__-) I look forward to Halo 6 coming out in late 2018 so he can be amazed at the graphical jump between Halo 4 (360 version) and Halo 6 (Project Scorpio enhanced version).

I care, and I think that is a defining feature that most games are missing now. I frequently visit friends, and the only system with a breadth of games that we are able to play together is the Wii U.

My best memories of playing video games is when I played them with others in the same room together.

I know an entire family that didn't buy Halo 5, and consequently an X1, because they removed the splitscreen. That's 4 copies of the game and two X1's ALL because of that decision.
