The New Age of Empires Likely Isn't What You Were Hoping For

A new Age of Empires game has been announced and will be available in September, Microsoft announced today. However, it's likely not the sort of continuation that fans of the real-time-strategy series were hoping for, as the new game--Age of Empires: Castle Siege--is a mobile/PC game that strongly resembles Clash of Clans.

Available for Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices, Castle Siege has been designed with touch controls in mind. According to a post on the PlayXBLA blog, it "brings a fast-paced experience to touch-based screens while delivering all the strategy and combat Age of Empires is renowned for."

No Caption Provided

Today's announcement didn't provide much indication of what elements have been retained from the old games. The description of what players do--build up a city, defend it against attackers, and attack online players' castles--sounds more than a little like Clash of Clans, rather than previous Age of Empires games. The visuals have a decidedly cartoon-y look, and the presence of in-app purchases--this is a free-to-play game--are likely to turn off some players.

The six civilizations the game "starts off with" all return from previous games, including the Britons and the Teutonic Order (my personal favorite from the Age of Empires II days). Heroes like Charlemagne and Richard the Lionheart will be available for use at times, and you'll be able to connect with friends through Xbox Live to compete and compare leaderboard rankings. Progress is saved to your Gamertag, allowing for cross-platform play across Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices.

The last original Age of Empires game to be released was Age of Empires Online in 2011, which was taken offline last month. Age of Empires II was re-released in the form of an HD Edition last year, and a mobile game, Age of Empires: World Domination, was announced earlier this year and is coming this fall. Ensemble Studios, the developer responsible for the earlier games in the series (as well as Halo RTS Halo Wars) was shut down in 2009. Earlier this year, Microsoft was hiring developers for a new entry in a "well-loved" strategy series, but we still don't know exactly what project that was for.

What do you make of this new Age of Empires? Will you give it a try for old times' sake, or you only interested in a new Age of Empires that resembles the older games? Let us know in the comments.

I am AOE3 fan. I really enjoy the music, texture of maps/armies/buildings, very nice gameplay, realistic feel overall.

I do not understand why they did not updated AOE3 with better graphics and better online experience.

This new AOE Online and AOE Worldbllablabla is so cartoonised like is made for 7 years old kids to play on a cheap chinese tablet......

Who at Microsoft would even commission the development effort for this junk?

The sad part is some MS executive allows this horrible game to be released, it flops miserably, and the MS exec then says "market interest is too small" and ends the franchise. Not even a thought that perhaps he/she (MS exec) got it completely wrong with the intended market and doomed the project. The decision bucks stops somewhere in the MS organization and I for one would like to know exactly WHO at MS commission this project?

Microsoft keep repeating the same non-sense over and over ... look what they did with MS Flight, FSX, and more. I wish media outlets (like gamespot and others) would start asking the hard questions, the questions the consumers of the AoE series want answered.

Microsoft's continued executive incompetence in PC game development is at an all time high ... why are these execs still at Microsoft? Most companies, if you fail this seriously, you're gone and don't let the door hit you on your way out ... but at Microsoft, it seems like failure is entirely acceptable so long as the project came in on time and on budget.

It's funny that AOE 2 HD is doing better than any of these newer iterations of the game. AOE Online was a down grade from AOE2, and this siege game... wow.. terrible.. You gotta figure, with an older game collection like AOE, the biggest group of people could reach will be the people who played AOE 2 on down. heck, even AOE 3 was better than these last couple installments.

Garb-Age of Empires

Where's the charm?

Why does it look so much like clash of clans?

The castles look nothing like real, AOE II did a much better job. Will you now make purple and pink units and buildings too?

Piece of crap.

I started this petition a little time ago. We all loved building bases , crushing our enemies , gathering resources etc which was beautifully portrayed in AOE Online. My only request to Microsoft is that if you cannot give us a successor please let the predecessor lead its legacy

When are we going to get real base building RTS games again? They have been teasing us with re-releases of some great games like Rise of Nations ect...but we need a new Base/Civilization building game like Empire Earth.

this is probably the worse incarnation of age of empires ever. Even AoE online kept some aspects of the game in tact. but this is just terrible., I has nothing to do with the original games, the original genre for that matter.

is this really what the industry has come to?

<< LINK REMOVED >> it's not a sequel or anything, just a mobile version of the game. I personally think it would work well with the Clash of Clans type gameplay (look at how well Star Wars Commander is doing).

Again, not a direct sequel or anything, don't blow things out of proportion.

Honestly, what happened to Age of Empires? I just stopped caring when they released AoE3, but previously the games were great. It had potential to be something more, now that technology has improved.

It just seems like they're taking steps back.

Age of Empires is dead. The people who played the originals on PC aren't going to be fooled by this. This is just more trash with the name of a once great franchise taped on to it.

Back in my childhood, the RTS was more like a Great War between 3 giants: Age of Empires, Starcraft and C&C. Sadly, of those jewels, only the Starcraft still stands its ground now. And even so, it's glory is fading fast when it's too focus on the online competition nowadays. It's terrible to see that the once great RTS genre is descending into such silly flash game like Clash of Clan these days. This could very well be the bell signaling the end of the genre.

<< LINK REMOVED >> AOE, SC, C&C and Warcraft. I played all those like hell. And when we got sick of RTS, we could just play Diablo or Diablo 2.

Nowadays, Warcraft is mmo (which i hate), AOE is dead, C&C is dead, SC2 I like only the campaign, which I can finish by a day or two. And when we get sick of those, we can play that Diablo 3 crap.

I will give Clash of Clans it's due it was a well-thought-out game. But dear Lord all these generic clones by big-name developers using classic names is just sacrilege.

All I can say is at least this was not a command and conquer game.

To be honest, I like the graphics style they picked. I enjoyed Age of Empires online untill they threw a major pay wall at you and im not surprised that they had to pull it after everyone else didnt like the pay wall either.
