Nintendo started today's November Direct presentation with a big surprise for long-time Zelda fans. Long-rumored and finally confirmed, the cult-favorite puzzle mystery entry in the Zelda franchise, Majora's Mask, will come to 3DS spring 2015.

The semi-sequel to Ocarina of Time will likely have improved visuals and bug fixes, but Nintendo did not reveal whether any additional content would be added to the quirky entry in the Zelda canon.

Pricing was not discussed, but the game will likely be the standard 3DS $40.

Meh, I'll probably get it but if it doesn't come out for the WiiU then it won't really matter much to very many people. They should just port it over to the WiiU, no reason not to. Unless they don't like game sales going through the roof.

Majoras Mask is my favorite game ever. I would rather play it on the Wii U on a updated engine.........the game should of been rated 'T' because most kids wouldn't have cared for the sides stories or the creepy themes it presented......people nevered really tried to understand the game or its artfulness it conveyed. its like a Anime on rewind all the time, and the music brought out the mood of the moment you were in. Easily the most emotional and most underrated game ever.......IMO

Can someone tell me how many dungeons are in this game? I define dungeon as a large area with many rooms, which contains all of the following: new item, map, compass, boss key, end boss, heart container (after defeating boss), portal that takes you out, sage rescued or some other mcguffin after completing it. This rules out Ganon's Tower as a dungeon.

<< LINK REMOVED >> By your definition, there are 4 main dungeons. They are reasonably easy due to the "time limit", but very well designed. For example, you can play a dungeon up to the part where you get the main item from the dungeon, reset/save, and the item will sort of help you pick up where you left off when the game "resets" the next time you pick it up to play.

Avatar image for lostn

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> So every time you reset, you keep all your progress? Are you saying time doesn't pause when inside the dungeon and you will need to attempt it multiple times to be able to finish it in time?

Avatar image for jonlarson98
jonlarson98

<< LINK REMOVED >> you lose some progress, i.e. the storyline progress. You keep all obtained items, songs, maps, etc. But if you perform certain tasks that trigger storyline events, they will have to be done over (do not worry though, none of them are very time consuming).

Time does not pause in the dungeons, but you learn the "Inverted Song of Time" that slows time to about a quarter of the speed. With the possible exception of the 4th dungeon, there should be plenty of time to complete the dungeons. But lets say you play a dungeon to the point where you get the dungeon item (such as the bow and arrow), then if you reset you could use the bow and arrow to continue on (such as shooting an eye switch to unlock a door). This isn't an exact example because it has been a while since I've played it, but that is the general concept.

If you are a Zelda fan, you need to play Majora's Mask. The time limit sounds irritating, but believe me, it is integrated very well and does not at all detract from the enjoyment of the game!

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Is there a way to restart the 3 day cycle, or skip to the end of it? Say you just entered a dungeon and it's already mid way into the third day. You know you don't have enough time to complete it in half a day so you're not going to try. Do you have to wait till it ends and starts over, or is there some song you can play to do that for you?

Do you have to backtrack every time it resets? This sounds like it could get annoying.

<< LINK REMOVED >>

Yep, at any time you are playing you can play the song of time to save and reset the clock. I usually do that before starting a dungeon, just in case.

There is some backtracking, but it isn't much of a chore. For example, in the area of a temple, you will learn a song to access the temple. Once you learn that you have it forever, so if you reset the clock to try out the temple, you simply warp there, play the song, enter the temple and go hard.

I was shocked how this was not included with the 3DS launch title. But I guess only so much you can fit on a cartridge. Fans should eat this up with open arms.

Love how them "hardcore" kids are complaining about a remake of a game released 14 years ago but they suck it up to Sony when they "remake" a game released 1 year ago,FAIL.

Gelous dipshits not getting cool games on their toasters.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Some people just hate on remakes/ re-releases.

I always liked enhanced re-releases of great games I heavily enjoyed. They're cheap for the developer and normally improves the quality of the original. Not to mention brings in a new generation of gamers.

As the clear Last of Us 'stab' goes, we both know many 360 owners bought the PS4. They missed out, same reason Little Big Planet 3 is a glorified/ enhanced Little Big Planet 2.

People actually complaining about a port that was asked for? Nintendo WILL give you whatever and your body WILL be ready.

Also we are getting 3 Zeldas on a single platform! =P

Yay Nintendo ! My 3DS gets a fresh new ga... What ? A remake of a game I played 14 years ago...?

God I hate this company.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well , I , and many other , never play it . So , yes , it is a "Fresh new game" to me . Also , if you "Hate this company" , why are you reading/commenting on their news ??? Even more important , why did you buy their hardware ???

<< LINK REMOVED >> There are a lot of people who missed out on Majora's Mask back then, and many didn't own an N64. Or hell, some of us loved the game and wouldn't mind a nostalgic return on-the-go with our 3DS.

They're giving in to the demand. They're responding to fans. Nintendo is doing exactly what more companies should do more often: Give their devoted consumers what they want.

It's not like they're re-releasing a game that just came out a year ago. I seriously doubt you'd react like this if Square confirmed a full-blown FF7 remake.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's supply and demand.

Most Zelda fans I know actually want this. Myself included. The Zelda franchise has a lush history of games, the more they remake. The better. I'd also welcome Konami putting Super Castlevania IV on 3DS :)

  • I still can't believe this . I'm so excited and happy that I'll finally be able to play it . I never had an N64 nor a NGC , so this is new and fresh for me ....

So instead of the 3DS getting a new unique Zelda, they get another remake. Yay Nintendo...

Avatar image for JustPlainLucas

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> New, yes. Unique? No. In fact, it would be called Link to the Past Remix. Same world, even some of the bosses were the same. So, when I meant "new unique", I meant EXACTLY that. When Majora's Mask 3D comes out for the 3DS, the system will have three new Zeldas, but not a single one of them is truly unique.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> This is the argument I had with my friend. Some guy somewhere compared the Zelda franchise to Call of Duty, in the sense that it's basically always the same game. My friend got so pissed about that and was determined to defend Zelda's honour, while forgetting that the guy was actually kind of right...

At the same time though, best not to mess with a good thing. I'd take a remake of a remake of Resident Evil any day over the last few piles of crap they've made. Same goes with Zelda.

Avatar image for sonicblast19

<< LINK REMOVED >> At least they CAN in fact say that not many people played this game, unlike them Sony with their TLoU remake,a game released less than a year before, hypocrite much?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Last of Us wasn't even a best seller so not sure what your point is. Plus many converted from 360 to PS4 so. . .

For the record I'm excited for this game ^_^

But then I'm also happy for Monster Hunter Ultimate 4!!

Why any of you seriously were expecting a Wii U release for this is beyond me. Instead of simply improving the existing assets/textures/etc they would have had to pretty much start from scratch. They would've probably had to use a completely different art style (Probably similar to Twilight Princess), which is a move many people would probably not like.

If the 3DS can handle it then there is no need to put it on the Wii U.

<< LINK REMOVED >> People will complain about anything...wow -_-;

It'd be stupid to put this on the Wii U. It would be a massive undertaking to bring the graphics up to an acceptable level for the Wii U. It makes much more sense to release this as a $40 3DS game.

If you don't own a 3ds/2ds/etc then I feel sorry for you.

The only other Zelda remake that I would REALLY like to see is the original Zelda remade with the graphics of A Link to the Past, Minish Cap or Four Swords Adventures. I wouldn't mind if the Gameboy Color Zeldas got that treatment but I would be perfectly fine if they never did. Screw Zelda 2 lol.

Anyone that thought a remake (not a remaster) of a N64 game was ever going to be made a main priority for Wii-U is crazy or delusional. Ocarina of Time would have been the Zelda game they did it for but they didn't. They instead put it on the 3DS so, its noticeably less popular sequel which was made from mostly recycled elements in the first place was never going to be developed from the ground up as a Wii-U game. Especially not while the major Zelda team is working on an actual Zelda game made from the ground up as a Wii-U game.

Avatar image for kairi_hitomi

<< LINK REMOVED >> You are right It was never going be made for the wii u and even if it was made for the wii u then fans from the OoT side would be fussing about how unfair that their favorite game didn't get a remake on the HD Console. OoT was also requested by fans when they saw Super mario 64 on the DS it's just that Nintendo were already on that ship.
