During Nintendo's November Direct presentation last week, the company announced that the cult-favorite puzzle mystery entry in the Zelda franchise, Majora's Mask, will come to 3DS spring 2015.

Yesterday, Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma explained that the project is more ambitious than you might expect, and that Nintendo has actually been working on it since it finished developing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, back in June 2011.

"So although we’ve been working on the game for quite some time, we didn't want to say it was being developed until we were at a point where we could proudly say that this is not going to be just another remake and that it's going to be worth your time," Aonuma said.

He added that the development team has spent a lot of time making sure the gameplay experience is smoother than in the original version without taking away from its unique world, and that it hasn't removed the look and feel of the game, which is creepier than other Zelda games.

Finally, Aonuma said that Nintendo will reveal what has been changed and what features have been added to the Nintendo 3DS version soon.

Check out GameSpot's wrap-up of the November Direct presentation to catch up with the latest Nintendo news.

But it is... We have recently found out that yes it is just another remake in fact it's going to be about the same as ocarina of time 3ds exactly what I didn't want it to be Just another slightly better graphic re-skin and i stress "slightly"

But the reason I'm really disappointed is because I've seen at least graphically what the remake could be in this fan made video << LINK REMOVED >> When I saw this video my heart practically exploded with excitement and then it happened again when nintendo responded to the video with "We are remaking majoras mask" when nintendo saw the fanmade video they should have said "This is exactly what we need to do graphically Then add new content areas dungeons and quest-lines" Instead we get a slight up in graphical detail in comparison that hardly pushes me to buy the "remade" game. << LINK REMOVED >>

Maybe someday we'll get a remake in gaming that deserves to be called a remake excluding the remake of Resident evil 1 for the gamecube witch is the one prime example of a good remake I can think of.

Anyway I'm not entirely against it it just sucks that they do an easy little fix so they can resale the same game instead of actually remaking the game more effectively.

This is a most splendid news. After hearing about this, my fatigues and niggardliness has ascended. Truly, my experience with the Ocarina Of Time was one with much fables. I tried to up sample it and play it on emulation with HD hi res textures, to no avail, the polygon count was overwhelming. However, the 3DS version was a most fun experience, the 3D worked magnificently, and the visuals were truly something that leaves in awe. My only regret is that I can't emulate it on my "rig", otherwise, I could make it all the more aweing. e.g, 120fps, 1440 x 1152 or 1920 x 1080 on a 150" projector, may be worth while. I shall pre-order this game, as the original was magnifique, and hope that it shall be emulated (True emulation, not screen shots or slideshows, fluidity, and plug-ins for improvements) one day, for amazing up sampling, without causing harm to Nintendo, their failure is my anguish, and their success is my nourishment. Their pain is my suffering, and their creativity is my elixir.

Their weakness is my exposae and their strength is the Criptonite of my nightmares. I hope that one day, they shall do the like to Mario 64, Starfox 64, F-zero X and twilight princess (I understand Miyamoto dislikes repeating and calls it boring, however, you can not have too much of a good thing) I read the other news about his take on the matter. Windwaker HD was truly a wonderful play-through, if something as euphoria existing in gaming, that would be it. I believe they should produce a simultaneous release for the Wii U, even if it is a rather horrid port over, still, it gives that projector some duty. To date, I try different games and different consoles with different companies, but starve of Nintendo Magic and Creativity. It is like a famine of colossal proportions, and, to that end, always end up returning to them and their games.

There truly is nothing quite like it. The days of Super Gameboy allowed one to play Gameboy games on the home console, and it had improvements, like making it go from green shades to colour, however limited it was. There was a gameboy advance device for the gamecube that allowed one to play gameboy advance games on the gamecube. Miyamoto, though you may dislike the same thing over and over, your ability for creativity is like non other, only rivalled by its nostalgia when it becomes old, it is truly the phenomena of the masterpieces of the great artists of old. Whose fine works are felt in the veins of modern-day collectors, who purchase it with love and passion, spending some millions and gazing for hours on end.

Miyamoto, your works can not be surpassed nor perfected by any other game developer, it is no wonder why Nintendo makes so many remakes of it. "A legend of fine games eternally retold". We can only expect graphical upgrades and utilisation of new gamepads and display technologie, and other faculties introduced by newer generation consoles, but it ceases there. You can not add more to perfection. I was daunted with the thoughts of the HD windwaker remake including its excluded dungeons due to budget constraints, that may have destroyed the fine balance of the game and gameplay, but my fears were not realised, it was perfect, it exceeded my expectations; the 16:9 ratio on the 150" 3D projector was a most delightful experience.

Sega, if you are reading this, please tell your masters Sammy to take a word of condolence, make a Shenmue HD remake and focus on it, make it the only project you work on for at least 6 months (Ambitious) reduce the releases of Sonic games, as they are being rushed in the market too early and too frequently, did the statement not reach you "Good things come to those who wait" and "perfection and creativity takes time to nurture" "there is always a balance between quality and quantity". These games are getting ever more "buggy" with random crashes,/freezes and frequently going through objects.

Here we go again

Avatar image for amar1234

it looks terrible why didn't they improve the graphics if they're remaking it??? Hopefully it just looks bad because they blew the vid3eo footage up bigger as the resolution of the 3ds is low. But the actual game i onb 3ds is more sharp. As here it looks very bad.

Avatar image for kylexile

<< LINK REMOVED >> This is always the case with 3DS titles. I honestly haven't seen a video of a 3DS game that looked good. I have however purchased over 30 3DS titles and all of them look better on my 3DS than they did in any video.

Never played majoras mask. At the time, i didnt enjoy Zelda in 3d as much as I did the top down versions like A Link to the Past. The darker tone intrigues me though, so I may get this.

Avatar image for Rashkavar

<< LINK REMOVED >> An interesting idea to consider while playing the game: Link may well be dead, in which case Termina is a form of purgatory or ghostly conjuration; his spirit accepting death and moving on. Once you've played it, watch the GameTheory episode "Link is Dead" on youtube for a convincing argument. (Not before, it contains plot details.)

Avatar image for thejohnduffy

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> But hey, it's just a theory. A GAME THEORY! Thanks for reading!

Avatar image for loz055

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I like the theory of Link going through depression and also dreaming in Majora's mask the entire time

I got this game again a few years on VC. They would have to add something big for me to get this again. I did get the 3ds remake of ocarina and the wii u remake of wind waker but I sold both of the original copy's so getting them made sense.

Bizarre trailer for a bizarre game... gonna love it

Avatar image for MariJoe007

Remaking a game still requires work and time. Some people just don't get that rehashing a game isn't as easy as it seems. And with Nintendo, they always like to add in incentives to buy newer versions. Nintendo will always make sure you get your money's worth.

*sorry, posted twice*

Avatar image for mrfrodo18

I think they're going to make either an extended version, or add on a mirror-world master quest. It only took them one year to make the original game for N64, and it's been about 3 years in the making for this remake! Of course, if they were to go with the extended idea, I'd have to have the option to play the regular cut of the game from the start.

I won't buy a portable game machine till I see true HD games...

1080p ballpark...

even the vita (although very vibrant) has a low rez washy screen... if smartphones can play games in 1080p... a 3DS or a Vita should be able too

Avatar image for timmyp777

<< LINK REMOVED >> I have played OOT and Majoras Mask at 1080p on my PC

Avatar image for bdiddytampa

<< LINK REMOVED >> you are missing out on some truly amazing games...

Avatar image for thegroveman

Yeah, a $700 smartphone is comparable to $1-200 handhelds. If you're so obsessed with 1080p, then play on your phone. I'll take a low res Link Between Worlds any day over anything on mobile.

Avatar image for TheExxorcist

That's not my argument... even the vita has no excuse for lack of HD display... 800x600???

Even 720p would look glamorous on a Nintendo handheld... the tech is cheap and mainstream now... I can buy a $350 tablet with 2k screen on it... problem with phones and tablets : They lack the proper intuitive dedicated controls.

I'm just curious why handhelds haven't pushed the HD prospect...

I would love to play games like WindWaker HD on a portable device. And yes I would pay a decent chunk of change for it...

the Vita is close, as it's a powerhouse compared to the Nintendo Hand Helds... but still under par.

Avatar image for GraveUypo

<< LINK REMOVED >> because they were designed when these things weren't mainstream. 720p phones were just beggining to be a thing at the RELEASE date of the vita, for instance.

the 3ds, well. it has that whole wii thing that nintendo likes (hardware about a generation behind) going on.

Avatar image for ecter1216

<< LINK REMOVED >> Your still not getting it....Smartphones are rather impressive piece of hardware . Some of them rival superior laptops in terms of power. Thats why their retail price is usually around 700. Now if the handheld cost that much and all we got was 800x600...then complain.

Avatar image for TheExxorcist

Maybe they should make a 3DS HD and adopt more 3rd party developers... More 3rd Party devs would also show more interest...sure would broaden the Audience... I was tempted to a 3DS at one point, I messed around with one a bit... and concerned how they could charge $49.99 for a game that looks as if it was made in 1990s...

sure the games are playable, and have depth, but isn't the whole video gaming experience about Visuals and Control???

Don't worry I'm not saying any one of you are wrong... but to justify a $50 game in 400x240 resolution... :( yikes.

I understand on a smaller screen it's not as dramatic... but still very unfortunate

Avatar image for sanchango

<< LINK REMOVED >> what games did you buy? All the games I buy(almost all a day or a week after release) are 40 bucks. I don't know where you're getting these 50 dollar games though. Games are about control and gameplay. Graphics, and visuals are just an added bonus.

Avatar image for mineflare

<< LINK REMOVED >> "I'm just curious why handhelds haven't pushed the HD prospect"

Because the main companies that are making them and first and third party game developers for those systems are Japanese and their audience aren't graphic hoars like most of Westerners.

There's the Nvidia shield for people like you though.

Avatar image for Coren_Larken

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't think 1080p really matters on a 3" screen...but some people seem to disagree with the science backing that statement.

Avatar image for TheExxorcist

Well the 3DS at 400x240 (Top screen) and 320x240 (Touch screen) seems a bit dated...

There are flipphones that achieve higher resolution lol

Avatar image for nelandir

Where's the change? And wasn't Majora's Mask 3D to begin with?

Avatar image for ekolite

<< LINK REMOVED >> It was never stereoscopic 3D, no.

Avatar image for sonicchubb

Why do they have the need to say that ??? I'm glad , and from what I saw , the entire world , that they re-releasing MM . Many of gamers , for many reasons , never got the chance to play the original . So this is the perfect way for a lot of them to experience the game . Even if it is "Just another remake" ......

Avatar image for sanchango

<< LINK REMOVED >> a port vs an updated version. Which would you choose?

Avatar image for Peanutbutterz

<< LINK REMOVED >> Omg it's like people find anything to complain about. We should be happy Nintendo is taking the time out to polish the game even more instead of just half assing it. The "new" features aren't going to change the gameplay or feel of the game so why complain?

Avatar image for toffifee

Nintendo releases to many remakes.

Avatar image for desperate001

<< LINK REMOVED >> After that RE:Remake, I'm all ears when it comes to Nintendo doing a remake.

Avatar image for ekolite

<< LINK REMOVED >> You shouldn't criticize a company that makes games that are quality enough for a remake. And at least it's been as long as it has since release. And it's not like Majora's Mask is as popular as Halo for example. Which is getting a remaster/re-release as well. Nintendo could have easily passed on Majora's Mask for that reason alone.

Avatar image for Stebsis

<< LINK REMOVED >> I agree, I mean they have OoT, SM64 and Star Fox on 3DS 2-3 years ago... and Bayonetta... which isn't really even Nintendo, same with MH3U... and umm... yeah :|

Avatar image for Elaisse

<< LINK REMOVED >> There is never to many remakes you can hire other teams to work on the remakes and make new games. There are far more remakes I want over new releases that I see.

Avatar image for filthy_casual_

It takes 4 years to remake an N64 game?

Avatar image for sonicblast19

<< LINK REMOVED >> They didn't just up the resolution like some other companies and sell it for 60 bucks.

Avatar image for huyi12

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> i would really like to know what new features have been added to this "remake" especially for £39 that it would be selling for.

Avatar image for sonicblast19

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The graphics are redone from ground up and they might've changed a thing or two, plus the game runs smoother plus it's portable, unlike TLoU or any other remaster aka rip-off,let alone this is a game that deserves a remake since it was released nearly 15 years ago.

Avatar image for GraveUypo

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> i'm pretty sure ONE PERSON can make a bigger overhaul in the game in that time than they did. the entire game didn't take anywhere near as long to develop originally.

Avatar image for sonicblast19

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Tell me more about your developer career.

Yes it may not take that long but the game might've been a side-project which can explain the long developing time since the game was built from ground up,not just a resolution update,I think that the only assets they somewhat reused are the audio tracks.
