The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 Confirmed For Nintendo Switch

Breath of the Wild is coming back for a new game on Switch, Nintendo has announced.

Nintendo has announced that a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is currently in development for Nintendo Switch. The surprising and exciting news capped off the company's recent E3 2019 Direct press conference. Nintendo didn't share too many details about the game beyond that, but it did reveal a short and eerie teaser trailer for the follow-up, which you can see above.

It was initially unclear whether this was DLC for Breath of the Wild or something else. However, at the end of the video, Nintendo stated, "The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is now in development." No release date, title, or further details were announced.

Now Playing: The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Sequel Presentation | Nintendo Direct E3 2019

The teaser trailer, which you can watch above, showed Link traveling with Zelda herself on horseback, and we see something happening with Hyrule Castle in the distance. The video also featured some eerie music and a stunning landscape similar to the one seen in the original game.

We've got a Breath of the Wild sequel trailer breakdown that dives further into what there is to glean from this debut video. We have since learned that some of the key talent from Breath of the Wild is back, and that the game is set in the same Hyrule.

The first game was released as a cross-generation launch title for the Nintendo Switch. It received universal acclaim, including a 10/10 in GameSpot's Zelda: Breath of the Wild review. Our critic, Peter Brown, wrote: "No matter how gorgeous its environments are, how clever its enemies are, and how tricky its puzzles get, the fact that Breath of the Wild continues to surprise you with newfound rules and possibilities after dozens of hours is by far its most valuable quality. It's a game that allows you to feel gradually more and more empowered yet simultaneously manages to retain a sense of challenge and mystery--which, together, creates a steady, consistent feeling of gratification throughout the entire experience. Breath of the Wild is a defining moment for The Legend of Zelda series, and the most impressive game Nintendo has ever created."

Uhh...No ...just no. Zelda titles dont have sequels. What are we gonna get the same world, but with more missions. as much as I love zelda, the initial idea is a big letdown

@KingofRogues: Funny, but by only the second game Zelda had a sequel: "Zelda II: The Adventure of Link".

@KingofRogues: Sequels worked great for the N64 Zelda's. Given BoTW's open world nature, I could see it working. Obviously there will have to be a lot of changes in the world to make it feel fresh, similar to how Majora's Mask was developed.

@ecs33: There were no sequels? Majora's mask was a new game.

@KingofRogues:That probably is the idea (same world, or at least the same engine, to save time).

Two upsides: 1)It worked for most people on N64 and 2)it's the only way there'd be another AAA Zelda in the next few years.

It was so good! I can't wait for a second. Best game I've played in a long time (possibly ever) and I've been playing for a long time. My only complaint was that is was too easy (needed a harder difficulty option). Once you got some decent weapons and armor, everything was pretty easy, especially the so called bosses. Loved the feel of the world, the magic, the mystery of it all. A truly feel good game.

I may be in the minority, but while I thought Breath of the Wild was a well constructed game, it was far from perfect. The weapon breakage system is, of course, an issue, but it also did not make much effort at storytelling for a modern game. I don't regret beating it, but I'd be hesitant to dive into another similar game. I'm looking forward to the Link's Awakening remake much more than a BotW sequel, Link's Awakening is my second favorite Zelda title, next to A Link to the Past.

I suppose my nostalgia for Zelda titles ended with the old 2D ones, as I truly disliked Ocarina of Time, to the point where I haven't played any subsequent Zelda titles up until Breath of the Wild. To its credit, BotW was immensely better than Ocarina, but not at the level where a sequel excites me.

This is all just personal subjectivity of course, I have no doubt a BotW sequel will be quite successful, as the original was largely well received.

@izraal: In no way was BotW better than Ocarina. Wtf Ocarina was basically a "2d zelda" and pretty much the only one of the 3d ones.

@blowfish82:

I think I missed the nostalgia train on Ocarina. I did not play it until a few years after it had been out, and it was a miserable experience for me, although I did push through to beat it out of a feeling of obligation. Those who played it when it first came out tend to have a better recollection of the game, as it was likely a fairly ambitious concept for when it was released, I fully credit it for that.

You and I are each speaking form points of personal subjectivity in this regard. I found very little redeeming value in Ocarina, where Breath of the Wild at least had moderate appeal due to polished game play and presentation. To me, Breath of the Wild is exponentially better than Ocarina, which seemed to have terribly clunky and awkward game play, presentation that does not hold up well, more aimlessness and cryptic progression, and the same disregard for quality story telling.

If I had played Ocarina when it released, I might have very different feelings, but having played it after other 3-D action/adventure games had introduced me to more polished game play experiences, I found very little redeeming value in Ocarina of Time. Breath of the Wild is hardly a game I would put on a pedestal, but it did at least make me willing to give the Zelda franchise a chance again after the awful (subjective) experience I had with Ocarina of Time, and that's saying something.

That said, I'm still unlikely to play past iterations between Ocarina and Breath of the Wild, as the franchise only has marginal appeal to me, though I might try future iterations following the Breath of the Wild model, though I'm not overly excited for those, either.

The Link's Awakening remake, on the other hand - super excited for that.

@izraal: Agreed. I played Ocarina of Time later for the 3DS. Man, that game had some real frustrating game mechanics. Ofcourse frustrating game mechanics were normal for the time period, but it's tough to feel the same level of nostalgia others may have as I only dabbled with the game when it was new.

@ecs33:

I wholeheartedly agree, I think we had very similar experiences. I also ultimately beat Ocarina of Time on the 3DS version. I had previously dabbled in the N64 original and a port to the Gamecube on a Zelda collection, but I've quit partway through on both attempts. On the 3DS, I stubbornly pushed through to beat Ocarina. The game is so highly spoken of I suppose I felt it I owed it to it to complete it.

I can only assume that for those who played it when it was originally released, it was like nothing that had come before. It makes sense there would be a high nostalgia component. When weighed in a modern context on its own merits, Ocarina falls short.

Regarding Link's Awakening, my excitement for the remake could be equally clouded by nostalgia. Link's Awakening and a Link to the Past were two games I greatly enjoyed when they came out. It's possible I will find Link's Awakening a bit simplistic when revisited, even with modernized graphics.

I would have to take off 1 or 2 points; Nintendo teased us by showing Donkey Kong and Ditty Kong and then only showing a DLC new character (Banjo-). Also, before E3 they said they would not show Metroid because they would only show off games for 2019 yet they showed a sequel to Zelda: BOTW. What the heck?

@Bobmcfree: Banjo being a character in Smash is WAY more exciting than a new Donkey Kong game.

Also, the reason they used DK and Diddy was because they were once Rare characters, and Banjo was even once in one of their games.

Nintendo never fails to amaze me.

Although BoTW did not have an amazing story, the content the game brought was great. The DLCs I did not really give a crap about tbh, base game was good enough.

The only thing I disliked were the Boss-fights (easy as hell, easier than some regular mobs out there), and the weapon breaking system was a royal pain in the ass.
Nevertheless, automatic purchase for me.

@rolento25: Not that I support weapon breaking systems, but did you ever actually run out of weapons in BotW?

I felt like I was always drowning in weapons. I had to discard good weapons more often than I broke them. There was never a single moment in the game where I suddenly had nothing left to attack with, or had to make do with something crappy.

@Poodger: I had my inventory (expanded to max) full of awesome weapons at all times. I was continuously dropping decent stuff to make room (especially after I got the master sword). He must play like my son (he can't resist picking useless fights with the stupid low level ogres and breaking all his good weapons fighting for no reason). If you fight only for chests and for orbs then you have plenty of weapons. If you are a moron (sorry son) then you won't finish the game.

My girl, and I, are definitely getting this one. We thoroughly enjoyed BotW. If any of the Zelda games got a direct sequel I am glad it is this one. A darker Wind Waker sequel would have been cool as well.

I do hope they release the HD remaster of TP, WW, and SS. I never got to play TP, or SS.

This one seems like a darker tone than BotW, which I am very excited about.

I would've preferred a Twilight Princess sequel or Wind Waker 2, but okay. The story side of BoTW was kinda weak.

If they make this two player co-op w/ Zelda + Link, I'd buy another switch and subscribe to their silly online service just to play it!

Towards the end of the Zelda reveal it shows Hyrule Castle rising higher. I wonder if its going to teleport to another realm, land, or perhaps turn the same BoTW Hyrule inside out ...
