The Last Of Us Season 2 Details Begin To Emerge

"Anytime you talk about Abby, you start to excite certain corners of the internet."

With the first season of HBO's The Last of Us recently coming to an end, fans are wondering what is coming next. Season 2 will adapt the events of 2020's The Last of Us Part II, but how many more seasons are coming and what can fans expect in terms of changes? Showrunner Craig Mazin discussed Season 2 in an interview with Collider. This story contains spoilers for The Last of Us.

Starting off, Mazin reiterated that Season 2 won't cover the events of The Last of Us Part II entirely, which suggests a third season is in the works, too. Game director Neil Druckmann made things even more clear, plainly referencing Season 3 in a recent interview with Kinda Funny when discussing the future of the show.

"Certainly, there's no way to tell the remaining story in one more season," Mazin said. "We would need more time than that."

At the same time, Mazin said he does not want The Last of Us to go on forever. This makes sense, considering Druckmann previously said the show will not adapt anything beyond the games, and right now, there is only The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II.

Mazin went on to say that Season 2 will begin with a time jump, just like the video game, but there won't be an extended time jump similar to what fans saw on House of the Dragon. Mazin said Ellie will not be recast, and in fact, actress Bella Ramsey is now the same age--19--as Ellie is in The Last of Us Part II.

"No recasting will occur. Not on my watch," Mazin said.

Finally, Mazin addressed the character Abby, who is central to the storyline in The Last of Us Part II. Although she did not appear in the Season 1 finale as some people believed, she will surely show up in Season 2 because she is such an important character to the story.

"Anytime you talk about Abby, you start to excite certain corners of the internet. All I can say is that Neil and I will be adapting the story to television, as best we see fit. It seems likely that main characters that are crucial to the storyline would be portrayed, but no, right now, it's too early for me to commit to anything in print, let's put it that way," Mazin said.

The character Dina is expected to appear in The Last of Us Season 2 as well, along with other characters both new and returning.

Similar to Season 1, which deviated from the source material in a number of ways with different storylines and characters, Season 2 will follow the same formula. Some of the changes from the game could be "radically" different, Mazin said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The Last of Us Season 2 is expected to begin filming this year, but a release date for the new season hasn't been announced. As for the game series, Naughty Dog is making a new The Last of Us multiplayer game. After that, Naughty Dog might make The Last of Us Part III, or it might not.
