The Last of Us: Part 2 Director Addresses Sequel Worries, Says "Trust Us"

"We're going to do right by you."

151 Comments

Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann has asked fans to put their faith in the studio as it returns to the story of Joel and Ellie for The Last of Us: Part 2.

Speaking during a panel held at PlayStation Experience, Druckmann started by confirming that the sequel takes place a few years after the events of the first game, when Ellie is aged 19. He went on to acknowledge worries among fans that creating a sequel diminishes the poignancy of the first game's ending and the journey its main characters went through.

"So much thought went into this and I know there's a lot of people that feel this trepidation about coming back to these characters and revisiting what that ending means and worrying whether that's going to spoil the first game," he said.

"You have to understand we feel all those things as well. No one loves these characters more than we do and we would not do this if we didn't feel like we had the right idea. The 'Part II' is really doubling down on that to say we believe in this so much. We're not trying to avoid it."

According to Druckmann, Naughty Dog is treading the two games as companions that, together, depict an overarching narrative.

"I played with so many ideas that had different characters and it never felt right," he explained. "The Last of Us is about these two characters specifically. So yes, the Part II is saying this is a complementary story to the first game, but the two together are going to tell this larger tale.

"All I ask is that fans of the first one put faith in us and trust us. We're going to do right by you."

Earlier in the panel, Druckmann also revealed that players will primarily control Ellie in The Last of Us: Part 2. In the first game Joel was the main playable character, and this reversal extends into the underpinning theme of hate, as Ellie can be seen in the debut trailer threatening to kill a group of as of yet unknown characters.

I am not happy with how The Last of us part || will play. I do not like the fact that Ellie will be the main character instead of Joel. I would like Joel and Ellie being the lead characters together just like the first game. And lastly I hope Joel and Ellie survive in the end.

Makes me nervous.... The first one was just so good, I dont think they can match it.

Like Uncharted games, started as adventure, #2 was more action but great, then the decline of the series started with #3 as I didnt really care for it.. Havent played 4 yet as I just have had no interest...

Id rather that trend not happen with The Last of Us...

I really think the lie Joel told at the end of the first TLoU is the driving factor for Ellie in TLoU 2.

What true Naughty Dog fan is afraid that they're going to screw this up and what is it based off of because their history says the complete opposite?

That's how yo respond to fan's worries and concerns. Unlike a recent FFXv debacle we had. Seriously so over the FF series now. Their Director didn't even manage to talk to the fans. Now Neil is the kind of director every game needs these days.

I think The Last of Us need to has sequel, even if the sequel will not be as good as the first one just for the sake of the story because i feel the story is incomplete. I take inception movie as a comparison: they end the movie so that fans can create their own ending whether the "spinning thing will keep spinning or not". But for TLOU 1, there was so many possibility at the end. Its like its obvious it need a sequel and its a matter of will Naughty Dog do that or not.

They can't improve upon an already perfect story. This game is most likely intended to make more money, using the original game's legacy.

And on a side note, we recently had Neil on record saying that "they were 50-50" about making a sequel. But an image of Ellie with her guitar was leaked a long, long, long time ago, meaning he's been lying to us. The game has been in development for quite a while.

Kinda breaks my heart, as a Last of Us fan.

@elkoldo: Of course they were lying. How else does anyone protect a secret and surprise their fanbase in the industry today? Like you said, it was leaked so clearly secrets are very tough things to hold on to. They also lied when they said that at no part would you play as Ellie in the first one and that was an awesome surprise when we got there.

And while you may think that TLoU was a perfect story, it was by no means a finished one. Everyone knew that and most of us wanted more. Pulling people into a world that they're never ready to say goodbye to is the dream of damn near every developer so props to them for that.

@elkoldo: Nothing is perfect. Anyway, Naughty Dogs is known for quality, so I don't think they merely want to captalize on the last game's success. i expect something of quality.

This is along the lines of what was said when the Star Wars prequels and sequels were announced.

Hopefully, this turns out better.

@Quicksilver128: That never came across to me and I enjoyed playing Ellie in Part 1. You have to keep in mind that she's not the average 16 year old girl and it's not taking place in an average environment. I expect the gameplay to be very much the same minus the classic Joel chokeholds :p. Ellie's weightclass is a little different than Joels.

@RicanV:

Agreed, I enjoyed playing as Ellie as well. She wasn't as tough as Joel, so I found myself using a lot more stealth, attacking enemies from behind.

I really don't understand the aversion to playing as a female character. I used Sirens in Borderlands & Borderlands 2, never thought anything about it.

@Quicksilver128:

She did in the first game.

I stealth-ed a guy from behind, hitting him with a bottle and rushing him. She slashed the tendon in back of his knee then knifed him in the jugular.

That sounds pretty damn finessed to me.

@Quicksilver128: Much of The Last of Us was stealth, specifically because Joel couldn't just kick the door in and punch everybody; they had guns or were super strong zombies. In the cases where Joel could fight hand to hand and not get killed, he brawled. I imagine if that happens with Ellie, you'll have some other method of dealing with enemies in melee than trying to punch them out.

My guess is she'll be fast and have a knife, and she'll need to try to hide more than just punch her way out of mistakes.

@Mogan: i enjoyed that part of the game though. The Melle combat was brutal and Joel was a bad ass. I like Ellie as a character but she cant carry a 10 hour experience in my opinion.

@Quicksilver128:It was my understanding that Part I was more of a stealth game. Throwing bottles to attract the clickers attention, etc.

As to the plausibility, you have to suspend disbelief a little. There are fungus beings walking around trying to kill you. That being said, Ellie did hold her own in more than one scenario in part I. Do I expect her to walk in there and hand to hand combat everyone and everything? Absolutely not but on that same note I did not expect Joel to do that either. This isn't that type of game.

@Quicksilver128:

As a smaller build, it seems pretty likely she'll rely on speed and maneuverability to get in close, avoiding full-on contests of strength.

Neither of us has seen the game...so let's see what Naughty Dog comes up with.

@ianbrettcooper: Perhaps you should look up the word because you clearly don't have a firm grasp on its definition. You asked a question in a very public space on an article centered around a comment directed towards the worry of fans for a game that you're not a fan of. You got a response to that question. To be clear, had you have just made a statement you still would have been in the wrong because once again you still put it out there in a very public space intended for open communication. If you say something here, unless you specify a crowd in your comment like Druckmann did, then whether you like it or not you ARE talking to everyone.

To answer your question though, you shouldn't. Why would you trust someone to make a sequel that you'd like if you didn't like the original? You knew that answer before you even asked.
