The Last Of Us 2 Won't Force You To Be A Dog Murderer

Recently, a retailer posted a description of the PS4 exclusive that mentioned you would need to kill dogs; thankfully, that is not true.

Recently, new marketing material for Naughty Dog's The Last of Us: Part II emerged, and it shocked some people over its explanation of how the game would seemingly require players to kill dogs to survive in the apocalypse. But that is not necessarily true.

Naughty Dog's Arne Meyer clarified on Twitter that the studio had no part in writing or assisting in the creation of the marketing copy that was used by GameStop before being deleted. Meyer said the retailer wrote this text as a form of editorialization to help people get excited about The Last of Us: Part II. In reality, you do not need to kill any dogs to complete the game.

Attack dogs are in fact a new feature in The Last of Us: Part II, but you don't have to kill them to get through the game. Enemies in The Last of Us: Part II will dispatch dogs to sniff you out, and you can choose to kill them, but it isn't necessary to progress.

Co-game director Anthony Newman told Polygon that Naughty Dog added dogs to The Last of Us: Part II to help make players experience even more "regrettable violence."

"Narratively, they're interesting because I think what's kind of at the core of The Last of Us experience is this kind of regrettable violence," Newman explained. "Being forced into these regrettable situations with these attack dogs only heightens that feeling."

Newman confirmed in that interview that you can beat The Last of Us: Part II without killing or hurting any dogs, but the game will be much more difficult this way.

The Last of Us: Part II launches on June 19, following a delay related to COVID-19. The game recently suffered a leak that exposed some of the game's story elements, so be careful out there. Sony, which owns Naughty Dog, has identified where the leak came from.

I've never liked killing domesticated dogs in video games. It's nothing game ruining, just kind of a bummer. I think it's probably because dogs don't know the difference between good and bad, and the only reason I have to kill them is because somebody trained them to attack me. Human enemies in video games have usually made choices that get them in front of my guns, and tend to stand for causes the world would be better off without. Dogs though, they don't get that they're part of some evil organization and can't choose to stay or leave. So it's a shame they've got to die for it.

In some games though, I think being bummed that I'm having to kill a bunch of dogs actually works for the game. Like, in The Witcher 3, learning that there are packs of wild dogs roaming around because they're pets whose owners were killed when one army or another swept through a village is sad, and then running into a pack of dogs and having to kill them to survive is even more sad, but it also helps establish that game world as being a dark, depressing place.

@mogan: well you could argue free will also doesn't exist so everything from shooting the dog to playing the game is meaningless. Instead of moping I think we should just gut those lil shits (jk). Also don't forget it's not meant to be taken too seriously as that's what the "video games cause violence" people constantly do.

In WatchDOGS 2 I killed a lot of dogs, it was a genocide.

Now I know why they named their game watchdogs.

I get intense when having to make an in-game decision, that's fun....but regrettable violence slathered as a theme? Nah, I'm good.

This is really getting ridiculous... I won't buy this game I waited so amxiously, I can't buy the game that was developed by youtubers and modern day sects more than developers and gaming studio.

This is hilarious. I love real dogs as much as anyone, but they are the #1 most annoying enemy in videogames ever and they need to be put down. Use a shotgun if you have to.

@RaveNRolla: well said! this trend of being overly sensitive about everything in video games is just insane.

It's actually sad to see that Devs or companies, have to explain themselves or answer to self-appointed you-tube critics, and quite often are buried by the snowflake- avalanche ( yeah i know what i did here ;-) ) of childish critique who push their social agenda in about everything!

Don't get me wrong, Devs and companies are subject to criticism by the end-consumers, and it is their right to do so, when the criticism is logical, constructive and has to do with game mechanics, glitches etc. important things that ruin the promised experience, or when the game delivers something totally different than advertised (ANTHEM), or even suggest to the devs fixes for the game and its immersion factor (BREAKPOINT).

That being said, no-one whined about the TONS of killing or skinning -with graphic detail that can't be skipped- , of about EVERY "LIVING" CREATURE in RDR2, why? because in my opinion fits the narrative of RDR2 perfectly.

So i guess Naught Dog did the same with TLOU2, and i am perfectly fine with that. It's a grim post apocalyptic scenario that contains KILLER DOGS. What these people expect? To have a mini game to train the KILLER DOGS to play fetch and frisbee?

Oh, and I super love my dog.

It boggles my mind that people are perfectly okay with killing digital representations of other human beings in horrific ways, but balk at killing digital representations of animals in a relatively humane way (shooting their brains out).

@The_Mighty_KELP: It's not all that hard to understand. Humans are capable of evil. Animals, on the other hand, are not. All dogs can be good dogs. Not all humans can be good humans.

I wouldn't hurt a dog in a game, unless I had to in order to progress the game, but I have no problem with violence against humans who have no problem shooting my head off. It's just a game, true, but people have the tendency to bring their real life standards in games.

One of the first games I played (as a kid) involved shooting innocent ducks with a damn light gun so killing digital dogs that are trying to make me start from my previous save point is nothing. It's me or them!

The killing dogs I don't mind in a video game. The human owners crying because they found their dog dead isn't something I think needed to be in the game.

I love my dog, but seriously are people shocked?

Even with that silly (Obviously not an actual feature) piece written were to be true then these people don't have a grip. You kill humans in game. Despite what their intentions may be, they are humans and it should be far more shocking than killing a dog that may attack you.
