The Last Jedi Director Confirms He's Still Working On New Star Wars Trilogy

Rian Johnson responds to the rumors.

A rumor popped up today that claimed Rian Johnson would no longer work on the previously announced new Star Wars trilogy. However, that's a bunch of baloney.

Johnson himself clarified on Twitter that he's still working on the new trilogy of Star Wars movies that will follow Episode 9 later this year. "No, it isn't true," he said of the rumors.

The rumour seemed to stem from the site SuperBroMovies. Responding to the origin of the rumour, Johnson said he's shooting down the rumor "with all due respect to the movie bros, who I'm sure are lovely kind bros with good fraternal intentions."

Discussing the new trilogy last year, Johnson said the films will feature "new characters, new places." He said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy responded positively to his ideas. While Johnson will oversee the story for the three films, he may not direct all of them.

Johnson directed 2017's The Last Jedi, which was the second of three films in the new trilogy that began with 2015's The Force Awakens and wraps up with this December's Episode IX. The Last Jedi made more than $1.33 billion at the worldwide box office.

In addition to the new trilogy of Star Wars films, Johnson is writing and directing the mysterious movie Knives Out featuring Daniel Craig, Michael Shannon, Chris Evans, and Toni Collette.

Imo Star Wars is dead for some time now. Disney killed it. Despite being a huge fan since I was a kid after seeingTLJ I decided I won't see another Star Wars movie until Kathleen Kennedy and her crew are gone for good even if that means I won't ever see a new Star wars movie. I'm answering with my wallet and suggest that everyone who is not satisfied with how Disney is handling the franchise do the same. They won't see any of my money.

I deeply enjoy movies and television series with strong female characters. La Femme Nikita? All over it. Dollhouse? Even better. Kill Bill? Erin Brockovich? Hunger Games? Yes, yes, and yes.

The Last Jedi was awful for reasons that have nothing to do with the overinflated grievances of underperforming teenaged boys. I could not have regretted paying to see that movie more if someone had decided to scream "FIRE!!" in the middle of Finn's utterly pointless C-plot journey to the casino planet. Gee, being trampled to death sure would have "subverted my expectations," huh, Rian?

Should have done this from the beginning and let someone else do 8. Why let him ruin the loved and established characters first?

of course he is... no other director wants to touch this property, let alone deal with the social media abuse that is inevitably to follow -- disney has no other choice but to sign him on. johnson must be inhuman to want to spend the next 10 years of his life ruining a previously much beloved franchise but so be it...

I just think it is time to move beyond Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and others affiliated with the original Star Wars fame should move on to other events in Stars Wars. I will always love the Original Star Wars trilogy and The last movie in the second Trilogy Revenge of the Sith and even Rogue One for me was good. However going forward the rest of the movies are boring and just not interested as the storylines are getting too bloated. I wish again for an new story line with an different set of characters such as Thrawn.

@lonewolf1044: I actually believe that is Johnson's plan. That's why his movie took such great (but divisive) efforts at opening up the world to ideas and characters and motives outside that of just jedi vs sith and Skywalker family drama. People were angry and complained about all the ways TLJ went out of its way to defy any expectations, but it was important to lay the groundwork for exactly the sort of thing you mention...new story lines with different characters.

Great. This guy's terrific and just oozes passion and dedication. I loved Looper, The Last Jedi and his work on the Ozymandias episode of Breaking Bad is something that will go down in history. The episode had a perfect 10 on IMDB for what, 3 years or so? He also finally made me interested in Star Wars again after the dumpster fire that were the prequels. So glad he had the balls and didn't cater his movie to the angry millennial prequel apologists and MCU lovers, even though apparently the majority of the fan-base consists of them now.

I think he'll do even better now, with his own trilogy, because he won't have to deal with J.J. Abrams' sh*t.

@Thanatos2k: I cant stand the guy but the percentage of people who would boycott the film because of the Director is like less than 1% . If you're referring to Solo as the first "bomb" (which is an exaggeration) it under preformed mostly because of a non existent marketing campaign.

@Alex4789123: Oh please, the desperate spin to pretend Solo wasn't a direct result of Last Jedi is laughable. Solo bombed - it lost money, that is not an exaggeration. Nonexistant marketing campaign, what a crock. It had a commercial at the SUPER BOWL.

@Thanatos2k: Underpreforming does not make it a “bomb”. And it takes more than a trailer at the Super Bowl to effectively advertise a film. The vast majority of profits from any film are from casual viewers who go to the movies to be entertained for a couple of hours and then never think about it again. These people for the most part enjoyed TLJ and would have gone to see Solo had they known it existed.

@Alex4789123: I see you'll just say anything to defend your narrative. Proof they advertised? Well that doesn't count. Proof the movie bombed? Well that doesn't mean it's a bomb.

Casual viewers hated Last Jedi too. Most people did.

@Thanatos2k: I was exaggerating by saying non existent advertising but it was definitely much less than any of the previous films. And yes most people hated TLJ that’s why it got overwhelmingly positive reviews. My “narrative” is based on facts. Is yours?

@Thanatos2k: Bro pretty much every reputable site/critic that reviews movies gave it good ratings. The only people who hated it in large are a small (but very vocal) portion of hardcore fans who were angry with some of the story decisions (myself included). That’s my whole point here.

@Alex4789123: Yeah who cares what the audience thought, I mean, movie reviewers clearly buy most of the tickets. That's why Solo was patently rejected by a spurned audience, right? Keep making up nonsense to push your agenda, even in the face of reality. You're just retreading the same failed arguments.

That's a shame, after the abysmal job he did on The Last Jedi, which I hold responsible for killing off the Star Wars spin off films/extended universe, he shouldn't be allowed near a Star Wars film again, let alone a trilogy.

I'd wonder what Disney are thinking, but then again they gave the SW licence to EA and then claimed that EA was doing well with it despite only having released two mediocre Battlefront games, the second of which essentially began the death of lootboxes.

he is not. This is an attempt at saving face. Rian is lying outright and disney is laying by omission. If they come out and say that Rian is no longer working on his trilogy and that trilogy is never happening, a trilogy that it was much talked about, it would be admitting their mistakes. Disney will try to maintain this for as long as possible. This is as good a confirmation as saying that star trek discovery is the most successful star trek of all time.

@@PETERAKO: Yes. Because why would a giant corporation like Disney keep making movies in an extremely successful franchise? Especially after all the "bros" got so totally-rationally angry at the last one which also made lots of money? Much better to listen to the "fans" and kill the franchise now. Don't even bother with Ep9 because the youtube hate channels are TOTALLY representative of how the real world feels about things.

Yep. That's the only thing that makes total sense.

@PETERAKO: ok. Do what you want. As an actual SW fan, I look forward to ep9, 10,11, etc. And you know what? So do my kids. I hope SW is around just as long for them as it has been for me. I look forward to more stories set in this world and the new characters and adventures they introduce. Because that’s what normal fans do. They don’t cry and try and destroy the thing they claim to care about because they feel like they own it somehow. And the reality is that Rian gets that. He gets the SW world better than Lucas ever did (as evidenced in 1-3) and TLJ is necessary to ensure these stories can continue to be told for many decades in the future and for new fans to grow up with. Will they all be perfect movies? No, of course not. But neither were the original trilogy by any stretch of the imagination. Hell, if you were actually old enough to remember the criticism of the original trilogy you would be extremely hard pressed to say for sure if it was written decades ago or pulled from the internet today. That’s a fact. And yet somehow SE has survived and thrived despite the haters. And despite all this, not one single person can deny what I’ve said is true...there is zero reason TLJ deserves the anger, hate and backlash it’s gotten. Absolutely zero. People can be critical and not like it, but that isn’t what has or is happening. Not even close. So excuse me if I don’t take criticism here seriously when propeller are acting in a manner that deserves zero respect or honest consideration from anybody. People need to grow up and wake up.

@ZIMdoom: Solo didn't earn a penny for Disney, TLJ did worse in the box office AND BluRay sales than TFA, huge piles full of Star Wars toys were ignored by the public for the first time ever and even was one of the factors Toys-R-Us bankruptcy. All of that points at one fact: you are a regular shit-eater that doesn't like to hear shit isn't an edible meal, hence you proceed to smear the "haters".

@Saladudo: Solos failings had nothing to do with TLJ. I loved TLJ and have seen every single SW movie in theatres...and I had no interest in Solo and haven’t seen it. There is a reason Solo was dumped out in March when the other SW movies have been holiday releases. But I appreciate all the facts and evidence you lay out in your response. Clearly your debate skills are on point. Never before heard that Star Wars killed Toys R. And the fact TLJ peformed lower than the previous movie couldn’t be at all due to the extreme outrage and unhinged wrath coming from fanboys. Nope. Word of mouth and hype have no bearing on the general publics willingness to pay to see movies in theatres. But since everything else you say is so logical and thoughtful, I guess I just have to assume you are right. Wouldn’t want to hurt your feelings any more than they already are over a movie made for kids. So you are right. Disney should either kill Star Wars for good or they should only care about the loud mouthed minority of “fans” who only want to see Luke and Vader rehashes forever. I guess it shouldn’t surprise me considering where I am posting. It’s not like video game fanboys aren’t well known for crapping about things never changing and then not supporting things that are different from how they think it should be and crapping on change. Why not just CoD Star Wars as well while we are at it. Sorry, but you are unlikely to change my mind and I have yet to see a reasonable and logical rebuttal that justifies the anger and hate TLJ gets. This is just the gamer gate of SW IMHO. But feel free to ignore me and move on. I don’t want to hurt your feelings anymore than A kids movie already clearly has.
