The Hulk Won't Be In Captain America 4, Despite What Mark Ruffalo Said - Report

Apparently people thought the actor affirmed he's in Brave New World at a film festival recently.

The Hulk smashes, he's angry, and apparently he can misspeak, too. At least, that's the narrative after confusion arose over whether Bruce Banner actor Mark Ruffalo agreed with a moderator that he'd appear as the giant green superhero in Captain America: Brave New World over the weekend.

Variety reports that Ruffalo won't show up in the fourth Captain America film as the Hulk after talking with multiple sources. The actor supposedly thought he was saying yes to the fact that Brave New World is one of the MCU's next movies, not his inclusion. In context, that makes sense as Santa Barbara Film Festival 2024 moderator Anne Thompson just asks Ruffalo whether Captain America 4 is next--not whether he's part of the cast.

Now, before that exchange, Ruffalo does confirm that a Hulk standalone movie isn't in the cards. "I don't mean to burst anyone's bubble, but that's not happening," Ruffalo said about the green superhero getting a solo MCU film. He's expressed his interest in this type of project for years. For instance, in 2020, Ruffalo discussed his Hulk movie idea, explaining that he'd like to "fill in all the blanks about what happened to him in between all these movies."

Late last year, Captain America: Brave New World got delayed from this year to February 14, 2025. Along with Anthony Mackie starring as the titular character, Harrison Ford will appear as General "Thunderbolt" Ross. There has been speculation Ross could transform into the Red Hulk for this film, which would then make Hulk's inclusion more intriguing.

The Hulk's last MCU appearance was She-Hulk, which joked about the character's recasting after Edward Norton originally played the role. Mark Ruffalo took over in 2009's The Avengers.
