The Halo TV Series Finds Its Master Chief

Yet, still, no Cortana casting news. #Justice4Cortana

At long last, there's been a major development in the creation of Showtime's upcoming TV adaptation of the Halo video game franchise. We still don't know when it will premiere, but we are finally ready to meet Master Chief.

The mysterious masked figure, who is at the center of the video game franchise, has been cast by the network. According to Entertainment Weekly, Orange is the New Black and American Gods alum Pablo Schreiber will fill the role. A character description reads, "Earth's most advanced warrior in the 26th century and the only hope of salvation for a civilization pushed to the brink of destruction by the Covenant, an unstoppable alliance of alien worlds committed to the destruction of humanity."

What remains to be seen is whether fans will ever actually see Schreiber's face. In the games, Chief's identity remains a mystery. While you might assume that would change for the series, Showtime president of programming Gary Levine previously said whether Chief would unmask "is a key question and an important part of our series."

Schreiber isn't the only new cast, though. EW reports newcomer Yerin Ha had also been added to the show as Quan Ah, "a shrewd, audacious 16-year-old from the Outer Colonies who meets Master Chief at a fateful time for them both."

Halo is expected to begin production this fall in Budapest, with Kyle Killen and Steven Kane serving as co-showrunners. Black Mirror alum Otto Bathurst has signed on to direct and produce the series. Showtime describes its take on Halo as "weaving deeply drawn personal stories with action, adventure and a richly imagined vision of the future."

Disclosure: Showtime is a wholly owned subsidiary of CBS Corporation. CBS is GameSpot's parent company.

Master chief is basically a blank slate since he’s unequivocally the most generic and non-character character in gaming. Interested to see what they do with him.

I think you meant "whom is at the center of the video game franchise", not "who".

I haven't watched Showtime in a very long time. I love the show Homeland. Halo will get me to subscribe again. I would expect and hope that it is good.

If Steve Downes doesn't voice Chief, I'll never watch a second.

He might be good, though I expect it will be difficult to view him as Chief, rather than some other Spartan.

The only correct way to do Chief in a show or movie would be to put a 7 foot tall stunt man in the suit, or use CGI, don't show his face, and have Steve Downes voice him

Eh. I guess they could also make a series about Dragonborn, but the whole point of Halo has been to me that I'm Master Chief and there's as little forced dialogue as possible.

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: I get that definitely. But the whole Halo series is spread out over so many mediums as it is makes it hard for some to have that view (Books really kill that for me). Chief isn't really comparable to the Dragonborn anyway. With Dragonborn dialogue is a choice, you choose much of how you interact with the world, you control their life essentially. With Chief, the only choice you really have is if you want to kill your allies or if you want to kill this particular peon of an enemy or not.

Edit: Though I will say I'd easily prefer any other character to base the story on than Chief. I mean there are other Spartans, Marines, ODST, naval officers, etc. Honestly I'd rather see some UNSC vs Insurgent stuff with the first season and then move with the start of the Human-Covenant War on Harvest (Such as a short glimpse in the season finale and moving on with the next season's premiere being about the battle) with more focus on non-Spartans.

" Justice4Cortana"? Has there been some injustice done to the character?

@lionheartssj1: I think they're just being funny/mocking hashtags that say similar things. Just a few weeks ago some people were using #justicefor an actor that did something idiotic.

I think the concept of this Halo TV show sounds interesting. I wonder if Speilberg will help out in any capacity yet?
