The Gears Of War Movie Brings On Avatar, Armageddon Writer

Shane Salerno gets the gig.

A movie based on Gears of War has been in the works in some capacity for a very long time. It's now moving forward-- again--as producer Universal Pictures has found a screenwriter for the project.

Shane Salerno, whose credits include Armageddon and Shaft, will write the script for the film, according to Variety. Salerno is also on the writing team for James Cameron's four Avatar sequels.

No Caption Provided

In October 2016, Microsoft confirmed that the Gears of War movie was in the works with Universal Pictures. The rights have switched hands, it seems, as The Lord of the Rings studio New Line Cinema purchased the rights to make a movie based on the game originally back in 2007.

At the October event, Gears of War boss Rod Fergusson said the goal for the film is not necessarily to copy over the story from a Gears game. Instead, Fergusson said they want to make the best Gears movie possible rather than one which is the most faithful to the games.

As of yet, there is no word on who will direct the untitled Gears of War movie or when it will premiere. Universal Pictures is a juggernaut in the film industry, responsible for franchises like Jurassic World, The Fast and the Furious, Minions, and others.

As for the Gears of War game series, Gears of War 4 was recently updated with new maps and more. You can see a full rundown of everything it comes with here on the Xbox Wire.

let's study the history of game adaptations......here's pretty much all of em except those with no stats, and more ore less anime movies [Pokemon, Digimon, SF Chun Li etc] the % is the Rotten Tomatoes score, also I've underlined those above 30% note that so far nothing is above 50%

Super Mario Bros May 28, 1993 15%

Double Dragon November 4, 1994, 8%

Street Fighter, December 23, 1994 15%

Mortal Kombat, August 18, 1995 34%

Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, November 21, 1997 3%

Wing Commander, March 12, 1999 10%

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, June 15, 2001 20%

Resident Evil, March 15, 2002 34%

Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, July 25, 2003 24%

House of the Dead, October 10, 2003 4%

Resident Evil: Apocalypse, September 10, 2004 21%

Alone in the Dark, January 28, 2005 1%

Doom, October 21, 2005 19%

BloodRayne, January 6, 2006 4%

Silent Hill, April 21, 2006 29%

Postal, July 21, 2007 8%

Resident Evil: Extinction, September 21, 2007 22%

Hitman, November 21, 2007 14%

In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, January 11, 2008 4%

Max Payne, October 17, 2008 16%

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, May 28, 2010 36%

Resident Evil: Afterlife, September 10, 2010 23%

Resident Evil: Retribution, September 14, 2012 31%

Silent Hill: Revelation, October 26, 2012 5%

Need for Speed, March 14, 2014 23%

Hitman: Agent 47, August 21, 2015 8%

Ratchet & Clank, April 29, 2016 17%

The Angry Birds Movie, May 20, 2016 43%

Warcraft, June 10, 2016 28%

Assassin's Creed, December 21, 2016 17%

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, January 27, 2017 33%

I really had to lower the bar here to highlight "the good ones" and I use that very lightly......even the decent adaptations have major issues......30+ years and still no improvement? stop making these trash movies. please gamers stop giving em your money.....

@darthrevenx: Would counter this by arguing that the games with the most potential for good movie adaptations are also the ones that end up stuck in development hell for one reason or another.

Halo, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Uncharted, The Last of Us and Metal Gear Solid are examples of game-to-movie adaptations that could be amazing if done right and given a large enough budget, and they were all announced years ago, but have all failed to get made.

Looking at your list, almost all of those are adaptations that I never would have wanted or asked for in the first place, where you would go "of all the games to choose from, why make a movie out of that particular one??"

Max Payne is the only one in the list that makes me think "there's a lot of potential there, please try again and do it better next time"

@Spartan_418: if Hollywood stopped trying to make live action adaptations of games and just went animation these things would be better off.....but don't do what Ratchet & Clank did, release the game's cutscenes with nothing between scenes connecting em.....

I'm looking forward to the Netflix Castlevania animated series coming up......it's r rated like the HBO Spawn series in the 90's so bloody, violent and all that, they won't have to hold back and can tackle serious stuff....plus I hear it's going deep into the lore.....sounds awesome plus some of the people behind the Voltron Netflix series are behind it.....

i'd support more animated adaptations but frack off with live action adaptations.....hate to sound mean but that is my compromise lol

@darthrevenx: So much this. Never understood why game to big screen adaptations had to be live action, when some form of animation would work so much better in most cases.

@triplebullet: for me I couldn't get past the orcs......also there's better fantasy movies out there....

LOTR, Legend, Dark Crystal, Labyrinth etc......pretty sure i'm forgetting a few.....Excalibur I think fits....that was awesome...

I realize they matched the game's look but the orcs looked laughable next to all the real people lol

@darthrevenx: I mean let's be honest. Nothing comes close to LotR. Regardless though I think it was a good first start. Story was ok. CGI had bad moments but some of the visuals were amazing. Acting was decent as well. I think it was very ambitious for Duncan to direct but if it had a sequel I feel it would be much better. Warcraft in comparison to pretty much the rest of the list is a lot better.

@triplebullet: I was never that into Warcraft though. my fave was Starcraft......buuuut Starcraft is basically the best Aliens vs Predator game ever made.....think about it....

the Dark Templar are basically the predators, the look of the Protoss is somewhat similar to the predators...

the Zerg are so the Xenomorph aliens......

then you got the Terrans, Colonial Marines......almost literally.....Confederacy meh

my fave game adaptations are Mortal Kombat, Silent Hill [both] and the first RE movie and I liked the first Hitman [it wasn't perfect but mostly they got it right, just the awkward bar scenes and having the girl there was like WTF but it still fit what 47 was about]

mostly i just look at game adaptations now with contempt cus of movies like Max Payne and the onslaught of RE crap and the stuff like Assassins Creed where it's just eww let's get something out there

I see it as a continual fail, 30 years of this and they're still fracking up?? at least with superheroes they'd try for a bit then give up eww we just can't do this justice right now, then they'd come back a decade or more later with another attempt and fail and it's like eww well we did better but still the tech sucks, and again they'd stop and come back in a few years and finally Superman got it right Marvel had mixed results, X-Men nailed the feeling of the mutants but not really anything else, Spiderman hit big for some reason...i din't like the bio webbing, plots or really how everything went down....Blade was epic and I really liked Ghost Rider but not the sequel.....then Nolan's Batman and the MCU happened and ushered in this golden age.....for Marvel lol

point is the comic movies weren't slapped out willy nilly, there was real effort behind most of em it's just tech, the times, acting etc weren't with em and they went away and tried again later....we need game adaptations to go away and try again later....or completely change tactics.....

I'd be way okay with animated movies based on games, that Castlevania anime they're doing for Netflix sounds awesome, it'll be R rated and bloody.....fracking sold......and it sounds like they're diving int the game lore for the story...I fully support that and I feel that's how these should go....

@Alucard_Prime: look i can't just come on and say all these suck ass, no matter what it's opinion but.....by using RT I can cite something a lot of people use, and they're not wrong also their rating is made from critics and people....

hey, most people revile Age of Ultron and I kinda like that movie, guess what it gets a 75% on RT.....I'd put it a little lower myself but whatever....i agree basically....

damned if you do, damned if you don't....you can't have things both ways.....I have a friggin point and you've failed to see the bigger picture....

eww he's blasting game movies i hate him....STFU, this all needed to be said, game adaptations over 30+ years have shown no sign of improving, time to write the genre off.....

@darthrevenx: Its sad that some still depend on others to tell them what is "good" or "bad." I'd admit that a lot of these movies are bad, but do you really think they made them to be Oscar worthy? Movies are so supposed to fun and entertaining.

@xcrimsonxsynx: you missed the point, it's not about oscer worthiness or being told what's good or fun vs whatever.....these are all supposed to be fun and entertaining....

for 30+ years Hollywood has made sh**t game adaptations and I say enough is enough.....these things need to stop, there's little chance of em becoming the next big thing after comic book movies....

Iron man set things right cus Marvel comic writers and creators all had a say in the movie, Kevin Feige hired people who'd listen to Marvel and put their ideas on screen and it worked, each movie after that solidified the MCU and they slowly built an empire.....

Resident Evil series started on strong ground and just fracked it up over and over again, what made RE1 cool was cut out, the score, the creep factor, the decent writing....

the sequel tried to tie into the games and failed, the score was utter crap, acting was bad, Jill was meh....and that end sequence.....ugh I've not seen a RE movie since that's how bad it was IMO.....yet somehow the series kept getting made and morons like Uwe Boll was allowed to run amok.....

and I hear others too.....Uncharted will suck as bad as anything, think man Uncharted is a setpiece game of climbing and gun shootouts and fist fights.....it won't translate well....same goes for TLOU....

NO, Uncharted if anything will end up like Assassins Creed.....maybe Uncharted get's more views but guaranteed people come out pissed and hating it.....another RT 20%

when I go and see a action movie like......Expendables all I friggin expected from it was....it stars a lot of my fave action stars so it should be pretty fun and we'll see everyone's skills on full display and that exactly what all 3 were....story?? who needs a deep story when only the best action stars ever are in the same movie???? I didn't expect a Oscar winner there, when I go to a MCU movie I know at best I'm in for a ride and at worst well this might be one of the stinkers...usually they're awesome, want fun movies? MCU is it man.....iron Man, Avengers, Ant Man, GOTG...Doctor Strange.....

I haven't seen even one game adaptation nail even Age of Ultron's failure meaning as bad as AOU was it's still better than every game adaptation.......and AOU is 75% on rotten tomatoes.......

the most reviled of MCU rates higher than any game adaptation........OUCH!!!!

The story needs to be about E Day. They should not start it with the gears 1 story. Writing is key. Actors are only as good as their scripts.

They better not screw this one up. I don't know how they possibly could. Just make it R rated and have a lot of aliens/people shredding each other with machine guns and chainsaws. But I'm sure they'll figure out a way to screw even that up.

@uubershikamarux: 50 Millions is not nearly enough given what would be involved with the special effects needed both physical and CGI. It needs at least 75 million preferable 100 million. They need to make feel like the terminator movies. Very realistic and dark in a scifi kinda way.

Would rather have a small group of survivors on eday fighting against a foe they have never seen and cant comprehend and then maybe at the end they are rescued by delta squad

Well, Warcraft movie had probably the best team someone could think off for writing, directing, photography, and some cool actors, and ended up being a poor movie. Most of them with huge important awards.

This news probably are a guarantee of another fail.

@ganondorf77: I don't see your end sarcasm tag... are you being serious?

As a guy who played WoW off and on since 2004, I expected better things from the Warcraft film. Duncan Jones, he may be a fan of the game, but he was way to in-experienced to write and direct that film. He went over his head by making the sets and locals picture perfect and forgot the story and casting mattered. Granted, the Orcs looked great, but the CG effects on on locations shoots looked cartoonish and broke the 4th wall.

On top of that, the casting was horrendous. Travis Fimmel couldn't act his way out of a paper bag and Ben Foster, who can act (see Hell or High Water) was horribly mis-cast as well Dominic Cooper as the King. Let's not forget Garrona, who somehow seemed to get lighter in skin tone and became more human by the end of the film.

The whole film was a mess from start to finish. They started the film in the wrong place. The Warcraft movie should have been planned as a trilogy, with the Fall of Arthas and Rise of the Lich King. The first film features Arthas as the good Knight, doing his best to save his people only to fall to the power of Frostmourne and Nah'Zul. The film ends with Arthas killing his father and taking starting his ascent to the Frozen Throne. Film Two focuses on the invasion of the Scourge (following Star Wars, by having the second film, darker in tone and grim for the heroes involved) and how Sylvanas is turned and the rise of the forsaken. Film three opens with several years having passed with a war waging on the scourge and the arrival of the horde and alliance arriving at Northrend to defeat Arthas... etc.

The first film only needed an opening scroll, explaining the history with some sort of cool animation, Hand drawn maybe, sort of what Blizzard did for the event before Warlords released. All in all, Jones and company failed hardcore.

"Rod Fergusson said the goal for the film is not necessarily to copy over the story from a Gears game. Instead, Fergusson said they want to make the best Gears movie possible rather than one which is the most faithful to the games."

And that is exactly why it'll fail.

That, and you can't cram 4 games into 2 hours. Assassins Creed made the same mistake, and Tomb Raider will be no different.

I love video games because you get hours and hours of story (or at least worldbuilding). You're never going to have a decent video game movie when you try to make it accessible to non-fans. Between rushed story setup to casting the turds like Mark Wahlberg, you're destined to fail.

So don't even bother.

@zoniax2: Agreed. Most likely it will end up being cheesy like the Doom Movie is. It should be about E day and getting thru that first day or week, with a clean ending but showing the war is just beginning (like how the Star wars ep4-5 ended).

@H0RSE: Even if that was the intent, it's still dumb because no one referred to it as "World War Two" back then, that term wasn't widely used until years after the war ended. They weren't at that time referring to World War I by that name, they were calling it things like "The Great War" etc

It's also dumb because it's in response to the practical question "What the hell's going on down there?" so the answer should have been something practical like "Japanese planes are bombing the harbor and the airfields." It's a useless and vague answer, to respond with "world war two just started", and then hang up the phone.

Stop thinking about it so hard.. It was an action/drama, not a real-to-life documentary... what I get from your response is, "it's stupid because I think it's stupid."

And who are you to say what the answer "should" have been? If someone answered me with "world war two just started," I'd put 2 and 2 together and realize there's some serious shit going down there. Vague? perhaps. Useless? not exactly.

But I digress. Now un-ruffle your panties.
