The Game Boy Is Coming Back, Hyperkin's Ultra GB Plays Original Cartridges

What's old is new.

Hyperkin is known for its lineup of retro consoles and introducing new ways to play old games. At CES 2018, the company revealed a prototype of the Ultra GB, which plays Nintendo Game Boy games using the original cartridges.

The Ultra GB shares a similar design to the Game Boy Pocket, but it's built with an aluminum body and a front-lit screen. Button layout and ergonomics remain the same as the old handheld, though. You'll find the volume control and power switch in same place as the original Game Boy. While the concept design has a blue tint to the screen, Hyperkin is adding an RGB wheel to change the screen's color tint in the final model.

The prototype Ultra GB has a DC power connector, but the final version will charge through a USB-C port. There's also a link cable port to maintain the multiplayer capabilities of some Game Boy games. Stereo audio is another big feature on the Ultra GB, which was implemented with Chiptune musicians in mind.

Hyperkin hasn't given a release date for the Ultra GB just yet but stated that it's aiming to launch by the end of the year. A price hasn't been set either, but the company said it's likely to be under $100 USD. A near-final build will be shown off in June at E3 this year.

With the wild popularity of gaming's past, seen with the NES Classic and SNES Classic, it seems a return of the old handhelds is in order. We've covered some of Hyperkin's products in the past like the SaveWizard for PS4, the retro-style X91 Xbox One controller, and Retron HD that plays NES games.

@timmyp1982: The final product probably has two speakers, rather than one like the default MONO output of the GB which also appears the be the case with the pictured prototype. The only way you could achieve stereo output on a GB was through the use of headphones. Check your facts.

Only an certain amount of people can use this provided they still have thier cartridges. I see profits being limited by this one caveat.

Can't say I understand what the point of this thing is. And that screen looks pretty terrible. Gameboys still exist. GBA SPs still exist.

@Brettsky128: The screen looks terrible? Didn't you read the part that says this a prototype? Prototype are just that and many many times the final version of a product looks very different than what you saw months earlier

Waste of time. You can get a GBA SP which plays all GB games for what $30 at most.

So, as this one looks more "modern" than the old one. How long before someone guts it and put's a PI in it with a color display ? Then I will buy it

Cool if you have carts laying around (I do have a hanful) but, with old ones fixed for a reasonable price, is there a real need for this ?

@snugglebear: I don't get it. It's not really retro nor truly modern. It's not anything. At least the upcoming Game Boy Mini will have 20-30 games preinstalled

But no doubt it sells enough like all the billion "retro" items

@PrpleTrtleBuBum: Honestly, I'd never get one in a million years. I just don't have old GB games sitting around. I have sweet memories of those years, but I gotta new 3ds xl .

They have to make it the original fat size? Not modeled after the Game Boy Pocket or Game Boy Advance? Also, Hyperkin makes shoddy stuff, so there's that too.

I would like to know if it supports gameboy color games, most likly the black carts I am talking about the transparent one's that are not capatble with the other gameboy's. Thou I havn't seen any footage of it being color so may be unlikely.

ALso want to know if it's a emulator or not. Mostly cause emulators have trouble with muitli carts with other systems like retron 5.

Really at today age it's not really hard to put a color screen with a bit more power.

Yeah... no thanks... I do love some old school gaming since games from a certain era do have a little something modern games don't and also because nostalgia, but gameboy games are way too far behind and too little are unplayable by today's standard. I'm still playing many SNES games and some NES games to this day, but I prefer keeping the gameboy in my memories.

Though the concept is interesting, it's hard to justify that pricetag. Modding a Gameboy color with a backlit screen is cheaper than this. If they want anyone to even consider shelling out $100 for this thing the have to include state saves, importing/exporting saves, a HDMI input/output, a micro SD slot, responsive controls and maybe even a custom UI screen with graphic control.

@jonnybrownieboy: Then just get a Retron 5. Has most of that, but no portability.

This seems like a dumb idea especially if the price is around $100. With so many cheaper alternatives to play game boy games this doesn't really bring anything to the table that justifies the price it is going to have.

The Game boy has some of the best games of all time (Shout out to six golden coins, and Wario Land), of which I still own a lot of them, but I don't know. I have an advance still.

The more I type this, though, the more I feel like I might get one of these.

@cornbredx: the best games of all time is always relative to a time and place for each individual. if one of the first games you ever played was mario 3 or mario world, then those would be among the best games of all time. if one of the first games you ever played was final fantasy 7, then that would be among the best games of all time. same applies to the ignorant youth of today who might think xenoblade chronicles 2 is one of the best games of all time. funny how lack of knowledge or nostalgia instils such strong emotions, be it rational or irrational. only a very unbiased person is able to revisit old games some 20 years later and give a truly objective opinion.

While the concept is interesting, there's really no valid reason to buy one of these for $100 when you can buy a used Game Boy Color for as little as $25 or a Game Boy Advance for around $30, and with those you can play more games with more features in color.

It's cool, but by this point a lot of games are going to need their batteries replaced. Although, I'm sure people who are willing to buy this, will also be willing to change them out as well.

Would be nice if it had a color screen, supporting both GBC and Super Gameboy format, and option for the original pea-green palette.

I guess this is a straight Gameboy Classic

Do slanted start/select buttons infringe on some Nintendo patent?
