New Line gets the rights.

We first heard about a live-action Fruit Ninja movie back in May, when it was reported that developer Halfbrick was working with Hollywood players to bring the game to the big-screen. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that film juggernaut New Line Cinema has landed the rights.

Before today, it wasn't clear which production company would be behind the film, a live-action, family-friendly comedy. Tripp Vinson, who is producing the Fruit Ninja movie, is no stranger to New Line, having worked with the company on the Journey to the Center of the Earth movies and San Andreas.

The script for the untitled Fruit Ninja movie is being written by J.P. Lavin and Chad Damiani, who were also behind another crazy-sounding project, How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack.

We also now know a little more about how a game where you slice fruit could have a story to tell in a movie. According to THR, the story follows "a team of misfits who are recruited to become Fruit Ninjas in order to save the world."

There is no word yet on a cast, director, or release date.

The Fruit Ninja series was created by Australian studio Halfbrick Studios. The game has been a huge hit, reaching more than 1 billion downloads. A version of the game was released for Xbox 360 that let players use the Kinect camera to slice fruit. A VR version of the game was released for HTC Vive.

Fruit Ninja won't be the first mobile game adapted for the big-screen, as Rovio's Angry Birds movie came to theaters earlier this year. Additionally, a movie based on Temple Run is on the way.
