The Final Fantasy 7 Remake Has Been Delayed--Here's When To Expect It

The remake will release a month later than planned.

The Final Fantasy VII Remake for PlayStation 4 has been teased for many years now, but we'll now have to wait just a little bit longer to play it--it has been delayed from its March 3 release date. A note from producer Yoshinori Kitase says the FFVII's new release date has been set for April 10, to give the team a little extra time for finishing touches.

"We are making this tough decision in order to give ourselves a few extra weeks to apply final polish to the game and to deliver you with the best possible experience," Kitase said in a message from the studio. "I, on behalf of the whole team, want to apologize to everyone, as I know this means waiting for the game just a little bit longer. Thank you for your patience and continued support."

The release of long-awaited remake is not actually that of the full game. Final Fantasy VII Remake will be released in episodic fashion, dividing the game up into distinct chunks. This initial one consists of the Midgar portion of the original game.

Recently the demo for the game was leaked and datamined, leading to spoilers circulating the internet. We even got to see the opening movie, a nostalgic recreation of the original 1997 classic. Square Enix has not given word regarding when the demo may be released to the public. For more on the FF7 Remake, check out everything we know so far.

This was one of two Square Enix games that announced delays almost simultaneously. The other was Marvel's Avengers, which was pushed all the way to September. It had previously been scheduled for May.

I would like to express my doubts regarding this so called Midgar episode. To put it simply: this game will go beyond Midgar as a surprise factor. I believe it is all a marketing stunt. There is no sense in milking this game so aggressively as to just include Midgar in a full priced game. I think they want to fool everybody so that they can later harvest the surprises and fan appreciation. I am not saying this is bad, or that they are evil or anything of that sort. I am simply expressing my thoughts to the matter. Besides, the game spans two blu-ray discs.

To clarify, I have to say the game would still be episodic. Going beyond Midgar and into the open world would not mean full FFVII. The game would still reach an ending point. I also believe this ending point would be the ending of disc 1 (please don't spoil this ending if you reply, many have yet to play this game). It would be the perfect point to end the episode.

What do you guys think. Thoughts anyone?

@G-Corleone: It's a nice thought, and it would be a nice surprise if they do expand this beyond Midgar city. I always had a niggling feeling that the game would include the Midgar Area as far as Kalm Town or the Chocobo Farm. Having said that, I also think that expecting much beyond what Square have confirmed is only setting yourself up for disappointment. So yeah, I'm just gonna take the news at face value and assume the game will end after the highway chase from Shinra HQ.

@G-Corleone: I think it will just stick to the original first disc 1 midgar area. But these areas will be fleshed out alot more. Especially the train station area (as already mentioned by the devs) and Shinra building by a ton. Not only introduced Red, but give alot more back story about the Turks , which really needs more fleshing out to begin with, and Zak/Tifa/Cloud.

In the city will be more to do and more interactions beyond guards and dogs. The original disc one took around 10-20 hrs to complete. I would guess about the same with this remake, but future episodes will be given alot more hours just because of the open world.

The way the first disc ends and the way the 2nd one starts is breath taking. When i first played it, my friend gave me disc one only, and I really thought the game ended right after disc one, and I would have to wait for a sequel. Great story in FF7.

Could have been just six more weeks and we could have gotten to play FF7 remake. Now it is going to be like ... idk ... 9 to 19 weeks from now, hell im not sure, i play video games, mostly because of FF7. I cannot do math. Which makes me terribly sad.... not the math thing, the 20weeks until FF7 remake comes out.

I'm still thinking of waiting for the PC release tbh, square have shown they are at least willing to invest more time after release and I'm sure there will need some work doing.

Also, I then get to laugh at all the netwhiners crying about how terrible it is and lower my expectations to an acceptable level that I'll enjoy it.

I'm thinking this is going to get trolled harder than XV and XIII, jeez it's already getting critiqued and nobody's even played the damn thing yet.

Kids on the internet be crazy, but it an amusing way.

Delay it indefinitely for all I care... all they needed to do was update the graphics, slightly tweak the old MIDI music, ever so slightly modify the combat system and BOOM! Instant 10/10 remake classic.

From the videos I've see, gameplay looks like an action RPG in certain sections...

INSTANT DUMPSTER-FIRE!!!

Anticipation of a Final Fantasy game is always better than the game itself.

As overhyped as FFVII is, I don't believe nostalgia will help sell this game due to the original being a Playstation exclusive.

And as the PS Mini reminded us, Playstation owners have NO nostalgia. They're all about the latest tech.

@GambreGoemon: Yeah, Thomas Wolfe states, “You can never go home again.” And it is the same with video games. Those millions of us who have played FF7 hoping to recapture that magical, at this point almost religious, experience that was the first time playing FF7. And just like our first love, or the first time you heard OutKast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-JfEJq56IwI, you cannot find or chase down that first feeling.

But since, a video game only costs a measly 60$ for 60+ hours of entertainment I'll be happy to at least give a try at finding that overly nostalgic feeling from 97', or at least rub one out, like i do to old pictures of my first girlfriend.

Man that image of Aeris on this article is wonderful. They really did a great job on the character designs, both Tifa and Aeris are drop dead gorgeous. Barrett and Cloud look awesome. The Avalanche characters look great too.

Keeping that steam punk aesthetic while also bringing the style up to modern times. I can't say I dislike anything about this remake yet. Sure you can complain about it being released in multiple parts, but if they really expand upon the original game, I could care less.

What I find funny about these announcements is all the thought that goes into the PR speak. It’s so common now, I’d rather a quip that says, “Game X has been delayed to date Y.” It’d cost publishers less to do so.

None of younger generation knows or cares about ff7. Cyberpunk on the other hand is hyped beyond belief.

Good luck selling your game, SE.

Its been 23 years since Final Fantasy VII originally released.

Hopefully Cyberpunk 2077 will blow this overhyped disappointment out of the water. Enough people have been born since then to do so.

OG tracks and PS1 audio still sound better to me. Text still works better than VA so far , or else this VA Isn't that good to me. Lastly If they've added an easy mode to an easy enough game , then add a hard mode for seasoned fans. Love everything else and can't wait to see how they expand and re-imagine things. Limit breaks and summons look amazing.

See yall at the Gold Saucer.

Heh,a delay of few weeks you say? A delay leads more often than not,to a better product but still...
I have to wait another 12months since Sony has a 1 year exclusivity rights!
On top of that,i will likely wait way more as i wont buy parts after parts, ill wait for the complete edition which will appear on next gen consoles eventually...so,see ya 2025-6?

@sladakrobot: 2025? You wish it will finish that soon. 2035 is more realistic. This game has been in the works since 2013. So 7 years just for part 1. If it releases in 3 parts, we're looking at 2034. If it's more parts, your children will finish the game for you.

@lostn: i dont think they will need another 7 years for part 2 or 3 each as i guess they built a ground(engine, assets etc) on which other parts can base on. My guess is 1-2 years between parts.

I don't like that they felt like the artwork had to be realistic. All the charm of the original is gone. They could have still done a nice remaster with cell-shaded upgrades of the original style, it would have looked dope. The realistic style makes it just look like a cinematic movie version of a game that's supposed to be about our childhood and imagination.

@kingfish1984: Gotta disagree. This game was clearly meant to have a more realistic aesthetic right from the very beginning based on the original art and how it was advertised. In battle, there is an attempt to make the characters less hyper deformed.

@kingfish1984:If you just want a HQ update on the models on PC we have proper realistic models mod. Also one of my fav the cel shaded mod which turns the cast like tetsuya nomura's artwork. .

Anyhow lets not set the expectation way too high, nothing could reach it then. The goofy part is still there judging from trailer, you still fight the absurd looking air buster and the lance wielding sahagin in the sewers and play minigames to save tifa.

Oh well, I guess a couple of weeks is nothing in the grand scheme of things but it seems that everything I'm looking forward to this year ahead is getting delayed:

FF7 remake

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines 2

Watchdogs Legion

The Last of Us part 2

This puts FF7R's release just one week before Cyberpunk. Not much chance of finishing it prior to that release. Unless that gets a delay too.... 😶

When they delayed XV by 2 months, it still ended up less than half complete and could have done with a couple more years. Please don't do that this time Square. If it needs longer, then delay it longer. If it needs a year or two, then delay for that amount of time. I just don't want it to end up like XV, as much as I loved it.

@saitohiraga: I think it has something to do with that demo. They probably feel like the demo revealed a bunch of things they wanted to keep secret, so now they're trying to cover that stuff up, or maybe expand on cut content fans now think are real features when they actually weren't.
