The Evil Within Director Wants To Port Sequel To Nintendo Switch

Would you play The Evil Within 2 on Switch?

The Evil Within 2 is out in just a few weeks for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and now producer Shinji Mikami--who previously directed the original game as well as the Resident Evil series--has said he would like to see a Switch version of the horror title.

In an interview with GameSpot, Mikami said, "I think a Switch version would be interesting. I'd like to try it if I had the chance." While not exactly confirmation that such a port is happening, it's at least promising that such a prominent figure in the series (Mikami is acting as producer and supervisor on the sequel) would like to see it happen.

There's at least one small stumbling block however: "First I'd like to buy a Switch myself," Mikami said. "I had to borrow Zelda with the Switch from another staff member to play it."

The Evil Within 2 is being published by Bethesda, a company that is currently in the process of porting Doom, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to Nintendo's hybrid console. If you want to see more of those games, you can now watch eight minutes of Doom on Switch gameplay.

Elsewhere in our interview, Mikami said the development period for The Evil Within 2 was "quite a bit shorter" than that of the first game. But that's not hugely uncommon, as he noted, "It always takes more time to make the first game in a series, compared to subsequent games."

We also asked Mikami about the growing expense of game development, particularly for bigger projects. Noting that it isn't a new trend, he said, "It's hard to make an original [game] now. The budgets are very big and the stakes are higher than they used to be." As for whether he would like to do a smaller project, he said, "Yes. I would like to do that," adding, "I don't know if it's OK to say that."

The Evil Within 2 is just a few weeks away; its release date is set for October 13 on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. For more, You can read our impressions of The Evil Within 2.

@altairdarius: How is it old games if you have never play it before? If your boss hired someone older than you would you call that guy an old employee?

@leeko_link: dude chill! You didn't understood at all what I'm talking about. Switch for the moment is converting games like doom or skyrim which are old. I'm impressed that they are looking forward to adapt even the games that are in development right now.

Ug why bother? The Switch is over hyped hand held garbage posing as a console.

This is definitely a game that the Switch needs in its library. But, I'm not sure if I can hold out that long for a Switch version. I'll most likely get EW2 on PS4.

@everson_rm: How does that even make sense? It was always planned to be released on more than the Cube.

@rglgathrawn: Back then he said he would cut his own head off IF RE4 was released on any platform that isn't Gamecube. But that was like 13 years ago...

@Marky360: It'll happen. RE4 is worse than Skyrim when it comes to ports lol

Pretty sure they made a version of RE4 that'll run on my toaster.

The horror genre isn't represented enough on Switch yet so that would be a good addition.

But would anyone purchase a horror singleplayer campaign for a portable over the other consoles? Portability is great for RPGs and highly replayable games not sure about horror.

@AttackOfTheCat: I'm not sure if portability is great for RPGs. The battery life kinda puts a damper on forever games that take 3 weeks to beat. Plus when you only have, say, a 15 minute break at work, that's not much time to do quests and stuff.

@rglgathrawn: Depends on the situation your using your portable for, a power bank and an RPG would be perfect for long train journeys/flights whereas something like Splatoon 2 would probably be more suitable if you just had 15 minutes.

@Marky360: Ha fair enough. Still think a pair of headphones and no distractions (such as on the bus) would be better for immersion which always adds to horror

@AttackOfTheCat: The two Resident Evil Revelations are coming soon to the Switch, and they are really good. Not bad for a first step.

@AttackOfTheCat: Yep. Different pace and plot from the first title, but overall it's a solid game. I played it on Xbox 360 years ago and I enjoyed it.

Bundle it with the first one and watch them sell like hotcakes. Nintendo is sorely missing 3rd party games and if Doom can be made to run well enough on Switch, I have no reason to believe other games can't either.

@biggamerdude: that is not mutually exclusive. The success of Doom and Wolfenstein II will not define the port of Evil Within. It'll happen if the Director says it'll happen.

@wendayy: director is under bethesda, if they dont want it, it wont happen.

If they dont do well, they'll see that a port of EW2 wont do them well.

"However those titles are all developed by Bethesda internally, while The Evil Within 2's primary developer is Mikami's Tango Gameworks"

WRONG! DOOM is by id Software and Wolfesntein is by MachineGames, and both just like Tango Gameworks are OWNED by Benthesda Softworks.

@Subaru1980: yes, but panic button is the developer who is porting doom to the switch :D id has nothing to do with the process.
