The Elder Scrolls Online's Free Player-Housing Update Is Out Now On PC

The Homestead expansion is coming to consoles later this month.

While you have to wait a while longer for The Elder Scrolls Online's Morrowind expansion, new content and features are now available in the MMO's PC version.

The game's Homestead expansion, a free add-on that lets you buy all manner of living spaces, came out today for PC/Mac. The expansion launches for PS4 and Xbox One on February 21.

With the update, players will be able to purchase and customize their own homes in the game world. The homes are instanced, so you won't be competing with other plans to secure a plot of land.

When Homestead launches, there will be around 40 different options, ranging from a small room at an inn to "huge manor estates with vast outdoor areas." You can even buy an island. Each one is themed around one of Elder Scrolls' 10 races, though there aren't any restrictions on who can buy which one. You can own more than one, but only one of each type, and they'll all be shared across your account.

Once you've acquired a home, you'll be able to customize it with over 2,000 different pieces of furniture and decorations, including chairs, beds, books, paintings, lights, and so on. These items can be purchased or crafted (crafted items can then be sold to other players), allowing them to be freely placed wherever you want. Most items can be purchased with gold or Crowns, suggesting some will require Crowns, the premium currency that costs real-world money.

All players will receive a free home when the update launches by completing a tutorial. Read GameSpot's previous Homestead coverage to learn more, while you can see it in action through the video above.

The houses are expensive and aren't useful. One of the medium houses, Grymharth's Woe, is 4800 crown if you want it pre-furnished. That's like around $33! What makes it almost not worth it is that none of the chests, dressers or cabinets are usable. You can't use any of the furniture to store your items. Also, there are no mannequins to display armor and no weapon racks for your extra or special weapons. Sure, its day one and Zenimax could add more items and allow storage but as it is right now, I'd say save your money/crowns. The only thing you can do in your house is sit in chairs and invite your friends in to emote at each other.

@PCsama: There really wasn't any harm in them doing that either so long as the other dev team stays focused on the original. Another source of income for them. I personally would like to see a Co-op Elder Scrolls.

@choda_boy: It seems homes seem to average in the 2500 to 3500 crowns in the store. There are some less than 1000, and more than 10,000. Unfortunately, the store does not say how much they cost in gold. I guess I will wait for some nice PC player to create a list. :-D

@Pyrosa: Thanks, but that was the first place I checked. Apparently they don't list the prices outside of the "store".
