The Division's Daily Players Actually Not Back to Launch Levels [UPDATE]

"Some players left the game earlier than what we thought."

Update: Ubisoft has now walked back its statement that The Division's player base has returned to the size it was at launch.

"This was a miscommunication--what I meant to say is the numbers for The Division are trending back in a positive direction," Ubisoft's Anne Blondel told PCGamesN. "Thanks to what we've seen with patch 1.4 and other updates the team has delivered. What I should have said is, we think it's possible that The Division follows a similar pattern to Rainbow Six Siege, which has seen increasing engagement to the point that DAU numbers have equaled those we saw during the launch period."

Original Story: Following the release of its latest patches, Ubisoft's online shooter The Division is riding high again, it seems. The publisher said in a statement to PCGamesN (via DualShockers) that the number of daily active players has returned to what the game had at launch, suggesting the recent patches were successful in drawing people back.

"Since the release of patch 1.4, we went back to the daily active users we had at launch, because people were [so impressed]," Ubisoft VP of live operations Anne Blondel said. People came back, she said, in part because of Ubisoft's commitment to improving the game, even though that meant delaying its expansions (and the revenue associated with them).

"Some players left the game earlier than what we thought, then we had to make that tough call: do we keep providing them with extra content or do we stop everything for a while, settle down, fix everything, and then once the game is where it should be, then we start providing more content," Blondel added. "And this is what we did [and] the community was super happy about it, even though they were disappointed at first that we were to push back the next DLC releases."

Part of Ubisoft's effort to improve The Division and its dialogue with fans was the launch of the game's public test server, where players can test new features before they are rolled out publicly.

The Division's latest paid expansion was Survival, which came out this month for Xbox One and PC, and lands on PS4 next month. The game's final add-on is Last Stand, which arrives in 2017. Following the 1.4 patch was another major one, 1.5, which came out alongside Survival.

In other Ubisoft news, Blondel recently said the publisher "wouldn't be the same" if Vivendi completes its hostile takeover bid of the Assassin's Creed company.

Aaaaah, the numbers. The only truth out there!
By the numbers, Destiny was the best game ever and Justine Bieber is more relevant to music than Mozart.
There is also a God.
Must be fact, the numbers say so.

@deadheadbill: Release date March 16th 2016.

The game has improved, but it's still the same old mess. Less bullet sponge mobs, and the content till feels forced to group up once you hit a certain level of gear. Lack of interesting tier sets, makes it a game I play every so often to check what's new, and that's about it.

@sellingthings: You're right, I could do that, and I may. The question was simply about the DZ. All the other changes mean nothing to me if it hasn't been fixed.

I have the game since Launch and I have never touched it after seeing the downgrade.

Anyway, I've heard that 1.5 is doing a great favor to the game; I will give it a try if that's true.

@IanNottinghamX: it seems awkward. but in context, it makes more sense. the wording was chosen specifically to draw attention to the subject. not a mistake of grammar.

@IanNottinghamX: there's literally only one planet I can be from that you know of. I'm not saying it'sn't bad. I'm saying it's moot because of the context. if you consider dialogue to be layered much like a math equation the part that seems bad is just the division between two levels of dialogue. it's an edited title. it originally said.

The Division's Daily Players Back to Launch Levels

now it says.

The Division's Daily Players Actually Not Back to Launch Levels

it could have been punctuated better, granted. but grammar rules don't apply in every situation where context is involved. or, maybe it is and I don't care cause I just made it all up, and it looks fine, and I can understand it, and I don't know why anyone needed to complain about it. runon ftw!

@bigrob007: But its an article!Grammar still matters(hell it especially matters) when your writing an article title. If It were a comment or comment response it would be one thing but no one is supposed to spend time guessing context in an article heading! Are you kidding me? they dont get a pass on this.

@IanNottinghamX: so, did you completely not understand what the title meant? or does it just look awkward to you? imo it's still very legible so it doesn't matter. also, it's on purpose. it can't be a grammar error if it's done on purpose.

@IanNottinghamX: i mean, no one ever accused gs of farming pulitzer prize winning writers. but it still doesn't qualify as a "grammar error." it was done purposefully to convey specific meaning.

@bigrob007: Thats just not how people read articles. Articles have to make sense period. Its like writing 101. The fact that you dont get that and are defending this atrocious article heading is baffling to me.

@IanNottinghamX: i get that, it applies to probably 90% of everything. here, it's not a factor at all though. the title was specifically written like that to convey a particular meaning. it baffles me that you don't recognize that.

Harsher penalties on script users, and not forcing people to do dungeons for better gear with crap percentage to get useful drops might be a start for next time?

I like Ubisoft because they are easy to figure out and they are very straightforward.

If someone from their company says anything, it's assuredly full of shit and a bald faced lie.

I admire their tireless adherence to consistency.

Hate to say it, but every clusterf*ck by Ubisoft is one more reason to think maybe Vivendi taking over might actually be an improvement. I mean, it wouldn't be, but it's reaching a point where they certainly can't do any more damage than Ubisoft is doing on their own.

They come out with a game where you couldnt report hackers and exploits and did nothing about the people who were cheating for SIX MONTHS. Weapons that were nothing like the originals, mobs that you could empty your entire ammo reserves into and they still didnt go down, terrible chat, worthless crafting, and no way to sell anything you produce to others. I played the beta, bought the collectors and now I am stuck with a terrible game that wanted to be a FPS MMO and failed.

Ubisoft has been tricking us with their trailers for new IPs.. The Crew, Watch Dogs, this The Division. All disappointments on release cause they did not live up to those trailers. Not saying the games are bad, at all, but they were trying to sell us something much bigger for this "new gen" (at the time) and they couldnt pull it off

I applaud the division devs for choosing the route that they are taking by fixing the game before moving forward with new content. More gaming devs should take notice.

Maybe if Ubisoft kept up more consistent updates it wouldn't have dropped off so much. They said that Division was going to be an ongoing thing like destiny, doesn't feel like it (even then Destiny was slow with content. Shit, remember when people actually talked about Destiny?)

@girlusocrazy: Lack of updates wasn't the issue with The Divison. It was releasing an incomplete game with a ton of bugs and exploits that were ruining a significant portion of the game (Dark Zone). Having a fleshed out game with minimum critical bugs was there priority and they knew that had to sacrifice. I'd rather have a game that works with improved features than a rushed game with a bunch of broken content.

@scott_willy: I didn't give a shit about bugs. For me and anyone I know, lack of content was the issue like @girlusocrazy said. Story missions vere great, but there was no engaging end game content. No PVP matches. No raids. You go to DZ to farm better gear and what do you do with it? Fight a horde mode + tank in a single room?

@scott_willy: Agreed, but I know a lot of people who fell off because not much going on... anyway good points, smoothly running game with no annoying hitches is a top priority for me as well. This game was pretty bad in that respect, even on console, shameful

@girlusocrazy: The game seems to work pretty solid now a days so what's the big deal? Most games run like crap at launch, especially big games like this. They have fixed a ton and it's been really fun as of late. No game is or ever will be perfect, but at least they are working on it which is better than nothing.

But I agree with slow content releases, that seems to be the norm though these days. I don't think the devs EVER anticipate how fast people chew through content. They obviously (any dev here) can't make stuff fast enough to please everyone sadly.

@nickpeck36: The big deal is they launched half baked. Saying we should expect crap at launch is giving a free pass to devs to make crap. It's not a good argument for gamers. Better than nothing is not a good standard to have.

@girlusocrazy: Well get used to it because that's the only standard that exists anymore. Once the ability to patch games on home consoles opened up it changed everything. Back before that games had to work no matter what or else it was a costly return process.

It will never be like it was in the old days (and even then games still had bugs and issues, but they were also much more simple than games are today) and I have long since accepted it and moved on. If a game is really broken at launch, I'll just wait till it's fixed to play it or buy it since there is always something else to play. I don't live in the past like most seem to do these days.

@nickpeck36: Uncharted, Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne, Ratchet & Clank, GTAV all seemed to be fine and playable all the way through day 1 on console with no real problems, Nintendo games as well. It seems that perhaps certain devs are guilty of being in over their heads. I won't settle for that crap and only buy games that work (just now considering getting Fallout 4). If broken game devs don't want my money that's fine.

@girlusocrazy: And yet all of the games you mentioned (not sure about the nintendo stuff) have had many patches since launch and some did have issues, but they weren't game killers thankfully. Plus most of those are totally different than a fully online MMO type game which has a lot more working under the hood.

But hey, it's your money so you do what you want with it, I don't care personally :D Plus certain devs being over their heads are often the huge AAA guys, so I'm not sure what to say about that. It happens now and it will continue to happen and I don't care unless it's totally broken, I'll just wait it out (which by then it will be much cheaper to buy anyways).

@nickpeck36: Yes as you say those patches aren't major game changers. If a game is coming from a studio that has a rep for busted gameplay like Bethesda or Ubisoft, I'm going to give plenty of time for the dust to settle before I consider it for reals.

Maybe Ubi should not be called AAA anymore, IMHO Ubi is B-tier, games are all broken rehashes of the same tired concept, and you buy them when there is nothing better to play. They're always part of a console launch because the first 6 months of new hardware is always slim pickings and they're always there to sucker people. Ubi also has a huge catalog of shovelware, Babiez Horsez Petz and all that other crap.
