Speaking to GameSpot for EB Expo 2014, The Division game director Ryan Barnard shared more details about how Ubisoft's post apocalyptic multiplayer shooter structures its game world. The Division presents a shared world experience akin to that of Destiny, in that singleplayer, co-operative and competitive multiplayer modes are blended into a more seamless experience.

THE SOCIAL HUB

No Caption Provided

In Destiny, you can return to a social area called The Tower after completing each mission. In this area, you can bump into other players as you visit vendors and hand in quests. The camera also defaults to a third-person view, so you can see your new weapons and pieces of armour. The Division contains its own social hub space that is separate to areas in which combat occurs, and it's the only place that you'll encounter players who aren't in your current co-operative party.

PLAYER VS PLAYER AREAS

Destiny separates its PVP content to an area on its map called The Crucible. This functions like a traditional multiplayer menu option, as it allows you to drop into competitive matches against other players. Similarly, The Division separates its own PVP content into separate areas called Dark Zones.

No Caption Provided

"The only time you'll see a player that's not in your group is inside a Dark Zone or in a social space," Barnard explains. "You could be in a group in the Dark Zone, you'd be very aware when you're in the Dark Zone, and that single player, you could come across them also in the Dark Zone and decide to engage if you want. But you won't randomly run into them when you're doing missions or when you're in the base of operations."

ITEM REWARDS

Though The Division won't have loot drops that are obviously tiered by rarity as in Destiny, the game still wants to use item progression as a way to reward players.

No Caption Provided

"End-game is big part of what we want from The Division," Barnard elaborates. "We want to have content for players to play endlessly, that would be the ideal goal for the game. So you need to supply that with new items, new weapons that cause them to get more powerful. But as to the specifics of tiering, we don't actually do that in the game, but they actually do get better. So we have statistics that are affected with an item is a better quality; there's reload time, recoil, lot of those kind of things get better with up to 'legendary' or 'epic', if you want, items."

Barnard also spoke about the game's approach to recreating classes common to the RPG genre. The Division is in development for the PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 and will be released in 2015.

lmfao. sorry but there's no way the division is gonna be anywhere near the level of shambles that destiny was. don't care if its ubisoft, still convinced its gonna make destiny look even worse (if that is even possible).

Um yeah I wouldn't call the tower a social hub because you can't do jack in there other than buy gear or get bounties. There's nothing social about it. I hope to god the division is nothing like Destiny because I don't want something that comes out half completed and requires me to spend and extra $50 for the rest of the game for me to even figure out wtf is going on nor do I want a game riddled with glitches and problems that debs are too busy ignoring and instead focus on patching away little the game had to offer. And I shouldn't compete the "end game" 2 weeks because there's nothing level to do or collect until the debs get around to releasing the next batch of items a week later.

So I read this article and laughed a little because such little effort was put on the division's side. They try to say crucible and dark zones are similar which makes no sense what so ever the only similar thing is pvp. Dark zones are like DayZ pvp in a way you can run into someone at anytime while crucible is more competitive like call of Duty with 6v6 match pvp. These games are completely different in general this game is freeroam based game online game and destiny isnt. Maybe If you compared this and ac unity it would make a little more sense but right now this article sounds like it's trying to make the division sound like a destiny rip off.

Well for Ubisofts sake i hope their game has longer lasting appeal than the 2 weeks Destiny managed to convince me to play. Seriously no extra DLC content is going to convince me to go back for more.

I have no idea if the game will be any good. Still, from the gameplay footage, is obvious that the fundamental mechanics have much more depth to it than Destiny.

Really awful hearing people dissing this game because of the crap game Destiny.

They are not the same. They have similarities in HUB and PvP area, but that doesn't mean anything about the story and missions in Division. Clearly they are separating them into a single player game that is co-op or Solo orientated.

Ugh. "Loot" does not equal replay value.

It's a cheap gimmick that tricks players into thinking they're accomplishing something.

How do random loot drops like Rare and Legendary weapons even fit into a realistic story like The Division?

You kill a bad guy with a pistol and he drops a legendary AK-47 with bullets that are somehow "stronger"?

If you want to "reward" players, do it with compelling stories, gameplay, and a world that we want to stay in.

Do us a favor Ubisoft, don't borrow anything from Destiny.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The article says that it WON'T have loot drops like Destiny.......
I think that The Division is going to implement items and weapons that you will probably find around that map, which would make a lot more sense. Also, a good way for them to implement the 'abilities' (like quicker reload times, more accuracy, ect.) would be to make it so the more you use a certain weapon, the better you are with it. That would make the most sense IMO and it would also keep with the realism aspect that they are aiming for.

@gllamas @tipsyfreelancer I can see what you're saying about loot being hidden as opposed to dropped but if you're in a war-zone and there is a real chance of a "Shoot him before he shoots you" situation, are you really going to hide your powerful, accurate gun for someone else to find and take the meh gun?

If you had a situation where you came across a gun fight happening, 3 v 1 or something like that and the 1 guy was about to die, you arrive the other 3 flee, cause low ammo/ injured/ outnumbered you go the other guy but he's died from his wounds and what's that, a shiny modified rifle, Whoopeee. Granted it'll be a bit cliche after the 20th arrived just in time to see to, not save his life but take his gun instead. But so would the "Look in the highly polished dust free lock box in the middle of a shot out filthy room" situation.

I would love a system where you improved based on time spent doing something, The older elder scrolls games did it to a point, which is why you end up running and jumping everywhere as opposed to fast travelling. But it's really hard to get some balance doing that in a MP game, if it's based on repetition there is nothing to stop someone sitting in a safe zone and shooting a wall until they've got silly accuracy and an impossible reload speed. Would love them to give it try, I can think of a few problems and possible solutions, but I'm also just some random guy on the internet.

@tipsyfreelancer I agree with your advice, but I disagree that "Loot" is a gimmick. Yeah having weapons magically drop off NPCs that aren't even using the weapon or gear that drops off them is a cool idea that would take a ton of work to implement visual consistency and then have that same weapon model drop and change hands to the player. It can be done but is unrealistic to expect. Would be awesome if 1 day someone did it though.

If you aren't into games that center on Loot drops (i.e., Diablo, any RPG, etc..) then maybe this isn't a game for you.

I also hope that the missions, gunplay, and environment is very fun and doesn't feel like a grind.

Yes Ubi please don't borrow anything from Destiny that game was a giant let down and don't promise us something and then not include it day 1.

@tipsyfreelancer.....You stay classy :)

I really like what I hear. As a guy planning to play this Solo on PC, it will be great. I can actually enjoy the story and side missions without seeing a ton of other players. That said, I can still see others when I feel like it in the hub and PvP. A perfect setup IMO. It also allows them to create (I hope) a deep and good story and set pieces and enemies. Not just some generic MMO type game play.

This game looks so incredibly good. It could be a bunch of "vertical slice demos" though and not the end result.

Really happy they decided to bring it to PC and even more happy I can solo it like a proper SP game.

Must say I'm not a fan at all of the player/character highlighting-lightup feature (reminiscent of ghost recon) that appears to serve as some radar positioning/health notification function when engaging. I think this significantly detracts from the immersive look of the game and already detailed environment. In fact, I think this game would be so much better without any sort of HUD whatsoever. I hope they get rid of rid of this feature altogether or have a way to turn it off completely. It just hurts my eyes.

Sounds like people's problem with Destiny is that it's too hard for them. Like they want the game to just give them everything. I keep hearing people complain they don't have good loot. It's there you just have to work for it. Yes you have to play the same mission over and over, but your supposed to up the difficulty too. The AI don't act the same when you tun it up. It gets crazy fun, for me anyway. Destiny is a good solid shooter. It just didn't have enough, because I hear a lot of people say they like the game but wish they had more of this and that. This is just the first game, they will build more for it from here on out.

<< LINK REMOVED >> More like it has a crap story and it was very repetitive in the missions and environments.

This game looks way deeper and probably will have a much better story because it treats the story game area as a proper story area and not MMO.

The problem of Destiny is that is not catchy at all, story is crap and missions and enemies are all the same according to the same type of missions all over again. Ambitious effort leading to nothing.

The moment it was announced as a MMO, i cried a bit....so much potential ruined.

All drama, story, character development.....all out the window.

Comparing yourself to Destiny probably isn't the smartest decision a game developer can make right now.

Here's to hoping the open world will lead to a better experience. And for some diverse loot.

Games like Destiny and Division both really need to move away from a loot fest version of improving your characters to a more skill based system. new loot is always nice, but you quickly hit a wall, and it feels just like your grinding away for minuscule improvement. I haven't played Destiny since completing the story at level 18. Just nothing there that makes me want to go back and keep playing.

Agreed. I've been saying this for years. Games like this and mmos need to move away from loot acquisition and make skill acquisition not levels the way to make your character more powerful. You shouldn't get new skills automatically when you level you should have to go out and find them thru quests or crafting or getting other characters to teach them to you or even using a particular skill type repeatedly unlocking new ones like you are mastering that skill.

This would also put more rpg elements in games, since instead of just grinding for purples, you could say go I a mission to find out the lost power of darth plagus to keep people from dying :p opening up a long quest chain in the process.

This way you wouldn't necessarily have to have a 'class' you could master different skill sets and switch between them. Instead of making alts you could just have one main on a never ending quest for power.

This would also make it easier to expand the game since the devs could just add new powers/skills to find.

"contain similar approaches to SHARED WORLD multiplayer experiences"

I would like if the editors do not prolongue the life of gimmicky buzzwords that mean nothing at all.

"THE SOCIAL CLUB"

seriously, no seriously, you are making a post apocalyptic game and you start throwing in "social" mambo jumbo?! what kind of atmosphere is this going to generate. Did you see any of that BS in metro, fallout or the last of us?

"We want to have content for players to play endlessly, that would be the ideal goal for the game."

lets keep the "we want" attitude and not turn it into "We did" like bungie.

@spartanx169x @PETERAKO So you are level 30 in 2 days. And how can Destiny be finished when the first season pass expansion did not even come out yet. Did you finish the six person dungeon? You wasted time goofing off in a lot of areas, so you actually admit that there are lots of places to visit in Destiny? Sorry but, you probably beat the record in one of the strangest comments that has ever been made about a computer game...

<< LINK REMOVED >> Additionally, NO WAY IN HELL will I be wasting money on a season pass on this game. I spent a fair amount of time on all the maps. If you really want me to break it down for you. Here is a short summary of Destiny: Environments(maps) how they look- I give a 9. Music-9, gameplay( how your characters move, shoot, and AI) - 8.5. volume of content-5. Multiplayer - 4 due to same basic gametypes as every other shooter for the last 8 years, limited number of gametypes at 6, no Big team game types all (that part is a total fail). Campaign/story. I would give a 5 . Whats there is good, but not enough of it in length or details). I could make comparisons to other games, but no need. Additionally, Stuff that was suppose to be in the game such as the Rings of Saturn and Old Chicago and other locations mentioned in the E3 2013 trailer are not there not to mention other scenes in that same trailer that never made it into the game. IF any of that becomes DLC (which I doubt), it should have been made clear that would be the case. Not to mention that Bungie said on more than one occasion you would have a ship you could fly and there would be different ones and the differences would matter, and they ended up as nothing more than a loading screen. I'll give you the link to the false advertisement known as the E3 2013 trailer if needed.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Can I play devils advocate. It seems you have detailed that you like the game, and the foundation but just want more of what was provided. Maybe they could have included more content I agree, but if you get the DLC whenever that is finished *cough* *cough*/ or released, it seems you would enjoy that as well. I have sunk 50 hours in, so I'm a little biased, it would be more, but my internet has been down the last week. I've been plunking around in the same environments from since Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast (56K modem baby), so I'm admittedly used to this type of game play. Outside of leaving out a few things that every game designer does, don't you think a few of the complains are a little overblown though?

If you want to have at it I'm not going to grind for hours upon hours just to do a few raids. Thats work, thats when it ceases to be fun. Sorry not happening. you can debate what is technically finished, go for it. But the story ends at level 20. Nothing new to learn from that point.

One of my favorite games was Phantasy Star online on Dreamcast, I loved it so much I bought it on Xbox, still have my game disc, just looked at it this morning actually. I knew what Destiny was going to be like, way before it launched, and I love it and still love it. Maybe others expected something different, and was disappointed, I wasn't one of those peole though, and @spartan doesn't seem like you were either.
