The Division Review in Progress Update

Long division.

[Update] After four days and more than 50 hours of play, I’ve finally “beaten” The Division--although I’m by no means finished with it yet. Those 50 hours were spent exploring the world, completing story missions, and grinding through side content in order to keep up with the campaign’s rigorous leveling demands. But I’m still anxious to dive back into the Dark Zone, to track down all the open world content I skipped, and to start crafting my own high-end gear. That’s right, even with the campaign behind me, I’m still anxious for more.

The game has a few obvious shortcomings--including its rote enemy AI and occasionally clunky shooting mechanics--but the more I played, the less I cared about The Division’s various imperfections. Instead, I simply grew more invested in the world, the story, and most of all, the loot. For those reasons and more, I’m happy to report my positive impressions earlier on only grew stronger the more I played.

With that end game content still in front of me, however, I’m not quite ready to issue a verdict. That’s why we’ve decided to update you today and post our full written review and accompanying video review later this weekend. In the meantime, you can watch the game’s opening missions and end game options thanks to our vigilant video team. See you on Sunday.

The original story is below.

Depending on your timezone, you may already have a retail copy of Tom Clancy's The Division installing on your machine of choice. The game officially launches on March 8, and just like you, we're only now getting our hands on the final product. Though GameSpot often receives review code ahead of a game's scheduled launch date, Ubisoft opted to give reviewers access the same day as everyone else in this particular instance. As a result, our official scored review will not go live until we've had an opportunity to complete the campaign, conquer the Dark Zone, and explore everything else the game has to offer--including its live, populated servers.

From the limited amount I've played so far, I can tell you the core experience hasn't changed much since the game's recent betas, though I was finally able to play to the previously omitted opening section. Rather than waking up mid-crisis in a chopper bound for Manhattan, you start in the considerably calmer borough of Brooklyn just moments after your Agent is activated. Following an introductory cutscene, you customize your character's physical features in a car window before heading off to the local command center for a formal briefing--or at least, as formal your beleaguered crew can muster.

No Caption Provided

This section smartly aligns your perspective with that of your character: both of you are just now joining the effort to curb the rampant violence engulfing a virus-stricken New York City, so it makes sense you'd get some light training and exposition. Though it's clear The Division will be driven far more by loot than by character progression, this early narrative framing provides enough context that the action at least makes sense--even if there's arguably a logical disconnect between The Division's themes of peacekeeping in a survival situation and the constant gunfights of the moment-to-moment gameplay. Still, by the time you've cleaned up Brooklyn, you'll have gathered the equipment and experience you need to dive into the real conflict in Manhattan.

Enemies still absorb a great deal of damage, but with the right gear, they don't necessarily feel like total bullet sponges. Putting down any enemy remains a challenge, but you no longer have to expend an entire clip to take down one guy, assuming you've been diligently upgrading your load out. A much bigger issue--at least early on--is enemy variety. The first few hours recycle the same garden variety looters over and over, most of whom employ the same tired tactics every time. In certain instances, I actually noticed enemies run past me as if on a preset paths. Mission variety also seems to be a potential issue, as the first three side missions in Brooklyn all reuse simplistic objectives seen in the betas: go to a location, tag an object, defend the object from incoming enemies. Thankfully, I've yet to see either the Rikers or Cleaners in action, and there's plenty of campaign still ahead of me. With any luck, these as yet unseen elements will inject the variety The Division needs.

With dozens of hours and unlocks ahead of me, it's still far too early to assign a score, but my initial impressions are positive. You can check back later this week for the full review, but in the meantime, you can enjoy our livestream of the first six hours to get a better sense of what post-outbreak New York has in store.

@guyondainternet: Publishers usually send review copies to sites before the public release. Ubisoft withholding The Division is a good indication the game sucks

1100 user reviews on metacritic and it's at 7.5 so must not be too bad.

@budah78: An online game where leveling requires time, and grouping up with people to explore the end game content requires time, too. I'd imagine 4 days is actually a bit too soon for a review.

@budah78:

No one received review copies before the release. They started playing this on the same day as everyone else. If go to metacritic you will see there is still a number of reviews in progress from other sites so its not like GS is the only site doing this.

I'm liking the game so far. I was skeptical at first but its great. The controls are tight, everything seems pretty responsive. My biggest peeve and make-it-or-break-it,with any game will be how well the controls are, this game has great controls. I am not experiencing any lag input at all. Gun play is pretty smooth. Graphics are good, but not amazing. The co-op experience ive had up to this point, seems balanced.

Not the greatest game of all time but it definitely doesnt suck.

Most enemies look the same would be the only con, and i personally wish there was a jump button, but it is what it is.

@Hiraishin: it is a start also for GS, game is pretty enjoyable with people that are not in "clans" or getting too serious, DZ is more fun than i expected, controls are pretty smooth and intuitive on consoles cause i played only on ps4, so far is good, a good game .... a lot of people complains about connection issues, boring gameplay and lack of good gaming stuff but they are going back to Destiny or any other MOBA game or to infamous Fallout 4 with his variety and Preston quests ... people are strange, like song says :-)

@jellyman68: I'm right there with you. I'm astonished at how much praise this thing is getting. I'm now level 15 and have invested over 15 hours of my time. Not sure if I can take any more of this crap. So much repetition for the sake of getting weapons suitable to your level with the goal to DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN. I'm a huge fan of R6:S, but this is unbelievably mundane. God help us.

@hernilious510: why on earth are you playing a loot driven rpg if you do not like "the grind"

And what does i am huge fan of R6 have to with anything? Are you comparing the 2 because it is a Tom Clancy game?

It's an RPG with loot, Do you think they can make mobs and BOSSFIGHTS that you can headshot like i RL?

@dwicklund1992: Metacritic is bullcrap, that works on a really out of date method of "The more famous a critic is, the more value he has", which in all honesty is absolute junk, which left Pain & Gain in the red/yellow, along with The Hobbit just because people expected too much from The Hobbit, and because Michael Bay directed Pain & Gain. Those are just two examples why Metacritic is worthless.

Which in turn, invalidates your comment.

@dookie_213: Stupid fanboy response is stupid fanboy response. I didn't say that. I was pointing out the argumentum ad populum which is a fallacious argument that concludes that a proposition is true because many or most people believe it: "If many believe so, it is so."

Another typical is McDonalds. McDonald's sells 75 hamburgers per SECOND... They're some of the worst hamburgers in the world. Dried, over-cooked patty that, literally, can't rot because it's been sterilized by over-cooking and drying out. Red things they call tomatoes but have no taste and a texture like cardboard. Nasty lettuce. Buns made out nearly nothing thanks to all the artificial dough extenders. The only thing on a McDonald's hamburger that isn't a train-wreck is the onions and condiments.

The fact that 68 million people eat at McDonalds every day doesn't make the food good. For the most part people buy it because it's fat, salt, sugar and cheap. Not because it's good.

@DraconisRex: Well that's just they taste, if they like MacDonald's then who am I to tell them otherwise, same goes to The Division and you might call it a "stupid fanboy reply" but its true. If people out there are enjoying this game, why saying they don't have "taste"? Its just a game and if they're enjoying it then that's all that matter. We're not all supposed to have the same taste.

Some games your might like, people might find it boring, that's that make the game bad? No, Its just that your taste is not someone's. I for one don't play GTA V, cause I find it boring, but is it for me to call those who enjoy it are lacking a taste? No

Many people don't understand the meaning of "fanboy" nowadays, whenever you try to disclaimed something, you're automatically a "fanboy". I guess people won't be using critical thinking otherwise they will be called "fanboy". I remember when that word actually meant something.

Let me ask you, did you played The Division?

@BigFeef: no, what it means is because most people settle for mediocre things, the rest have to suffer because they are left with companies marketing their products for the average joe.

I'm not going to bash you personally. What I mean is some people like their products a bit more raffined.

How can I be immersed in a game's environment when I keep fighting dumb enemies wearing hoodies, whom can absorb 30 bullets? Not to mention having your teammate crouch right next to an enemy because you need to ''revive'' him. This is not a fantasy game. Enemies are not harder to fight based on levels. The ''levels'' only mean they absorb more bullets, and the ''pattern'' of the wave of enemies coming at you is a bit harder to fight based on the surrounding environment.

Again, I'm going to compare this to Soccom 1 and 2(which was not an Rpg, just comparing the Ai and mechanics). Enemies would adapt a different strategy depending on the difficulty setting, and they would hit you with more efficiency and attack much quicker. They did not absorb more bullets.

@xolivierx: Seriously; your complaints reek of the beta. Your AI comments show that you haven't really progressed far in the game if you have played it; and your bullet sponge comments show that you're either trying to take on enemies way above your level; which is the only time I've had to use more than 10 bullet hits to actually kill an enemy, with usually one or two bursts to the head being enough to do the job; or that you're still basing this off the beta.

All you're really showing is that you're complaining about a game you either haven't played much or haven't played at all.

I am loving this game so much! I really wonder how many of the haters have actually played the game? Until you do you really don't have a right to say if it's a bad game or not. I played the Open Beta and got the Gold Edition for the Xbox.

I think one of the funniest, and stuck up comments is how there are glitches. Don't get me wrong I agree that for what ever game developer they should with hold a game to make the game as close to 100% as possible. But they can't find everything. This game had a way better launch then a lot of other Ubisoft titles.

The few problems they have been doing are miner to say the least. I have run across a few where I would get stuck to cover or the servers are struggling. So what? Everything will have issues that they won't find. Heck, Diablo 2 is still getting updates. 10+ years later!

This game is a blast. I would advise you if you are someone trying to get an idea if you want to buy any game avoid the hype and the haters. Many of them just read other haters post and continue the hate train because they are closed minded.

Focus on the positive ones. Those people a lot of the time will give you honest answer good or bad.

@marius_arilius: It's the Destiny hate train all over again. People who haven't even played the game are bashing it just because it's the thing to do nowadays with a game company they don't like. I was skeptical at first, still interested but very skeptical. After the disappointment of Watch Dogs and the pure garbage that were both AC: Unity and R6: Siege; I'd have to be an idiot not to be.

But looking at what people are bashing the game for tells a lot. They're not bashing the graphics or world design; which are both top notch. They're not bashing the story for the same reason. They're bashing the game because enemies are "bullet sponges" and the AI supposedly sucks. From that alone you can tell that these people haven't really played the game much or haven't played it at all and are just parroting the same drivel from all the game's other haters so far.

On enemies being "bullet sponges". If you could kill every enemy in the game with a head shot, I'm sure people wouldn't be commenting on how 'realistic' the game is; they'd be screaming about how pathetically easy it was. Some trade-offs always have to be made with reality when making a game; some people just don't get that.

On the game's AI; I will admit that for the first few levels, the AI is inept. The end. But as soon as you hit about level 8 (of 30); you start meeting a variety of enemy types (snipers, melee rushers, tech skill users, etc), the enemies start using skills against you, will actively seek to flank you, will seek to flush you out of cover or suppress you with incoming fire, and a whole host of other strategies. If you're not smart about how you engage enemies, you will get hammered; in a group or solo. I've been in several groups where some people think that all you have to do is run ahead and spray enemies with bullets to succeed... They died very quickly and often.

I'm having a blast with a game that I thought was over-hyped and was going to be just another garbage game from UbiSoft; I was wrong and I'm mature enough to admit that.

@BigFeef: The Al on this game are pretty serious, they will try the best to kill you and if you're not smart enough you will die. This is not the "I'm the hero and have best weapons so Al need to back off" type of game. When they are in group they will work together and take you out cleverly. I don't really see why people are calling this game "bad", sure they might hate Ubisoft for the past games released but that doesn't mean the rest of the games from Ubi will have the same effect.

@BigFeef: I very much agree with this! Playing the open beta (Demo, for the technicallities for some people) left me feeling like there won't be much variety, but I can safely say that there is some variety. Not exactly sure where the critisizm of "Bad AI" comes from, I feel threatened by them quite often... Well... For the most part, they aren't exactly very smart after I shoot them in the head with a Marksman Rifle a couple of times, but for the most part they flank you about, the grenadiers grenade you, and the Cleaners are pretty much unpleasant if you try to give them a hug.

Pretty sure lot of people seem to harp on this, because it is a Tom Clancy game it should be authentic, headshots counting for a lot and whatnot, and they seem to disregard the idea that this is an RPG game, that just happens to have Tom Clancy's name on it, and I... Have to be honest I don't get why people say "I am having a really hard time playing this game and taking it seriously because it's not so realistic for a Tom Clancy game". It's an RPG, if it was realistic, it would either be really easy or really hard, depending who is giving the headshots.

@kalgert: As I said in some of my comments, thats whats weird to addapt to:

An RPG with guns vs other humans.

Were it Medieaval or Futuristic, would make sense to have sponge dmg enemies.

As it is, it feels weird. Would be OK if we were fighting heavy armored individuals only, but sometimes its just that lowy gangster with a hoodie, that is 4 lvls above you and takes lots of dmg.

But yeh, you have to play this game with the mindset that it is more RPG than a sofisticated shooter.

(and for BigBeef information, yes, you CAN make a hard shooting game without bullet sponge enemies).

@julianboxe: Not saying that you can't make a shooting game without bullet sponge enemies; some of the other games in the Tom Clancy series (the Ghost Recon games) are prime examples of that. But this isn't a hard shooting game now is it? This is an RPG shooter.

No matter how the city looks, that's just the icing, and the actual cake mix tastes like arse. Would you eat a rotten cake with a really good chocolate icing with sprinkle? I wouldn't.

I can grasp the rpg elements, but to me the game is unapealing.

No matter what people say, enemies absorbing bullets is not realistic. If it were aliens or something else, I could understand. Looting guns doesn't look rewarding either.

Had this game been an offline game, it would probably recieve a rating of 6/10.
But because you can play with friends, people are like ''wooooooow bestest game ever''.

Killing the same waves of enemies is tedious. Especially when the AI is rather stupid and all the enemies look the same. THe AI in Soccom on ps1 was vastly more challenging in every single way.

@xolivierx: Borderlands had human enemies that didn't die to a headshot either, and people still praise that game for being a good RPG Shooter game, your point about The Division not being realistic because enemies don't die in one gunshot to the head is rather moot (Think of it like this: If an RPG was "Realistic" with headshot=Death, then people would hate it because it would be too easy)

The gun rewards may not exactly be very exciting, it mostly being an added stat boost, but I feel like the point of an RPG game is to grind for the biggest baddest weaponry and be the most powerful overlord of them all. Then again, that might just be me.

And to answer your question: Making an analogy with cake to a videogame is like making an analogy with a buffalo to a penguin. It makes no sense.

And I am not defending The Division because I would be in denial or a fanboy of Ubisoft (I only bought three games from them), but I am defending it because either the cons that people make are rather daft considering the genre of the game, or are trying to convince people that the game is bad in some very stupid ways. I am having a good amount of fun with the game, even managed to dying a couple of times, mainly because I am playing on the Hard difficulty.

@xolivierx: It sounds an awful like you haven't actually played the full game and are basing this off of something else. But yes if you don't like bullet sponge games you probably won't like this game. But the game is actually pretty detailed and the Ai are actually pretty good on hard mode.

@dwicklund1992: I'm sure he's basing his take off the game's beta, which was pretty bare compared to the main game. I'm also sure too that if he was able to one-shot kill every enemy in the game; his complaint wouldn't be about "bullet sponges", it'd be how easy the game was. You can't win with some people. And on the AI; yeah, he's definitely not played past level 10. Even on normal they can be a handful if you're not careful and will use a variety of tactics against you. "Rather stupid AI" indeed...

@xolivierx: what you can learn from this is this new trend : develop an average game, advertise it A LOT, push out the demo but have your marketing team camouflage is as either an Alpha or Beta, and then add the ''Coop or online'' elements to add that very special spice called ''play with friends'' which will mask but not hide that very bitter taste.

the result : an average game getting great reviews at launch because people can't see past that multiplayer element and look deeper.

Buying the game today finally; but I've been playing it since launch using my brother's Steam account. He won't be back from his deployment until the middle of April; so I had to help him out. XD

My experience with the game so far has been a very good one; and surprisingly so. After the last few Ubi disappointments I've played; I was expecting this to be just another over-hyped game... and boy was I wrong.

Pros: The game looks very good with stellar world design that runs at a solid 59fps maxed out on my year old gaming laptop. It's the little things too: watching snow settle on your character if you're out when it's snowing is a delight to see, for example.

The gameplay at first glance looked like the same old boring 3rd person shooter formula; but it's not and is surprisingly deep. I've been having fun while solo setting up flank attacks utilizing the turret or being a juggernaut using the ballistic shield. And group gameplay is even more fun utilizing 'tank', 'healer', and 'dps' builds. Nothing like hammering mobs and other players in the DZ with a nice group setup using all three 'builds'. Tons of fun!

Then there's the story. I haven't completed it yet; but from what I have done, it's very good. And things like intel you collect and the way the world is presented as non-static and actually 'alive' really adds to the immersion. Just running around exploring the game world is a joy as there's always something happening: from roving bands of bad guys harassing hapless civilians, to civilians fighting each other, to just checking out the sights of one of the world's most iconic cities going to hell in basket... it's all really well presented and well executed.

Cons: First off; this is an UbiSoft game, so that means having to deal with UPlay. It's a much better UPlay than I had to deal with even 4 months ago; but it's still UPlay. Expect it to bug out and do stupid things on occasion like crash you out or kill your internet connection for 'reasons', reasons that have nothing to do with playing or updating The Division.

The game can get annoying at times. Hearing the enemy say the same thing over and over again aggravated me in some of my longer play sessions. I mean; just how many times did I end up killing Alex anyway? Then there are the minor bugs like clothing items not showing up properly until you relog or the scope not zooming in properly on some weapons until you switch it out or remove it. But overall; these bugs aren't really frequent nor do they detract from the overall experience.

In summation; I really didn't expect much from this game. Now I'm finding myself having to clear time out just to play it more; something I did not foresee happening. This game can be compared to Destiny; simply because they're of the same genre (online 3rd person shooter RPG); but it's a different beast being fully open world, and a much better game to boot. A much fairer comparison would be to say the game is like a much better Watch Dogs with beefed up multiplayer. It's like UbiSoft decided to not make all the mistakes they did with Watch Dogs and then looked at Destiny and decided not to make heir mistakes either. The result is a game, and it pains me to say this, that is very fun to play and is actually very, very good. UbiSoft still have a long way to go to redeemed themselves in my eyes; but with this game, they're getting very close.

I looks like it takes quite a few rounds of sub-machine gun fire to the head to take out an enemy? Whatever happened to headshots? No thanks

@wilsondiabetes: the game is a shooter right? Should probably have realistic shooter mechanics then...
