The Division Review in Progress Update

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

Long division.

[Update] After four days and more than 50 hours of play, I’ve finally “beaten” The Division--although I’m by no means finished with it yet. Those 50 hours were spent exploring the world, completing story missions, and grinding through side content in order to keep up with the campaign’s rigorous leveling demands. But I’m still anxious to dive back into the Dark Zone, to track down all the open world content I skipped, and to start crafting my own high-end gear. That’s right, even with the campaign behind me, I’m still anxious for more.

The game has a few obvious shortcomings--including its rote enemy AI and occasionally clunky shooting mechanics--but the more I played, the less I cared about The Division’s various imperfections. Instead, I simply grew more invested in the world, the story, and most of all, the loot. For those reasons and more, I’m happy to report my positive impressions earlier on only grew stronger the more I played.

With that end game content still in front of me, however, I’m not quite ready to issue a verdict. That’s why we’ve decided to update you today and post our full written review and accompanying video review later this weekend. In the meantime, you can watch the game’s opening missions and end game options thanks to our vigilant video team. See you on Sunday.

The original story is below.

Depending on your timezone, you may already have a retail copy of Tom Clancy's The Division installing on your machine of choice. The game officially launches on March 8, and just like you, we're only now getting our hands on the final product. Though GameSpot often receives review code ahead of a game's scheduled launch date, Ubisoft opted to give reviewers access the same day as everyone else in this particular instance. As a result, our official scored review will not go live until we've had an opportunity to complete the campaign, conquer the Dark Zone, and explore everything else the game has to offer--including its live, populated servers.

From the limited amount I've played so far, I can tell you the core experience hasn't changed much since the game's recent betas, though I was finally able to play to the previously omitted opening section. Rather than waking up mid-crisis in a chopper bound for Manhattan, you start in the considerably calmer borough of Brooklyn just moments after your Agent is activated. Following an introductory cutscene, you customize your character's physical features in a car window before heading off to the local command center for a formal briefing--or at least, as formal your beleaguered crew can muster.

No Caption Provided

This section smartly aligns your perspective with that of your character: both of you are just now joining the effort to curb the rampant violence engulfing a virus-stricken New York City, so it makes sense you'd get some light training and exposition. Though it's clear The Division will be driven far more by loot than by character progression, this early narrative framing provides enough context that the action at least makes sense--even if there's arguably a logical disconnect between The Division's themes of peacekeeping in a survival situation and the constant gunfights of the moment-to-moment gameplay. Still, by the time you've cleaned up Brooklyn, you'll have gathered the equipment and experience you need to dive into the real conflict in Manhattan.

Enemies still absorb a great deal of damage, but with the right gear, they don't necessarily feel like total bullet sponges. Putting down any enemy remains a challenge, but you no longer have to expend an entire clip to take down one guy, assuming you've been diligently upgrading your load out. A much bigger issue--at least early on--is enemy variety. The first few hours recycle the same garden variety looters over and over, most of whom employ the same tired tactics every time. In certain instances, I actually noticed enemies run past me as if on a preset paths. Mission variety also seems to be a potential issue, as the first three side missions in Brooklyn all reuse simplistic objectives seen in the betas: go to a location, tag an object, defend the object from incoming enemies. Thankfully, I've yet to see either the Rikers or Cleaners in action, and there's plenty of campaign still ahead of me. With any luck, these as yet unseen elements will inject the variety The Division needs.

With dozens of hours and unlocks ahead of me, it's still far too early to assign a score, but my initial impressions are positive. You can check back later this week for the full review, but in the meantime, you can enjoy our livestream of the first six hours to get a better sense of what post-outbreak New York has in store.

There is no review because you guys don't score the game after half a day to a day of playing. You are scared that you're going to give a score that is way off if you do it like this.

It is not because your site has hosted some very bad reviewers, that you will be one of them. I have reviewed numerous games a day after release on this site and the score was about the same as you would find on gamerankings or on this site.

You have had time enough, the game is already released since 7/03 10 am in europe. Maybe you should find a reviewer in that region. Most of the early buyers already know how good this game is, the game is pretty good btw 8/10. Maybe even a 9 , I only played for a couple of hours.

There is always one catch though and those are bugs. But let's be honest here, fixable bugs and non fixable bugs are easily distinguished. Besides you could always mention that your score is without the bugs. People won't hold it against you.

Releasing reviews too late, well that people will hold against you. What's the point of have reviews if they only come days after the game is released, especially with a title like this.

@commander: From the looks of it, I think you need to go to your nearest walgreens and pick up some chill pills.

They probably didn't get a review copy in early enough. I mean, you've reviewed games, so you should know that as a critic you need to know the ins and outs of the product to give a solid review of it. Would you not think that Ubisoft may think the game won't do well, and so sends review copies out late so reviews can't go up before launch?

I'm guessing the game's gonna be either 6 to 7 out of 10 based on what I'm hearing so far.

@wexorian: Nah. Not this time. This time Ubisoft locked out all reviewers from reviewing the game cause so far the game's average at best and Ubisoft wants to cash in on inpatient gamers before actual reviews comes out. The game is bullet sponge AF. Takes multiple magazines to take out a single enemy. There's been reports of people losing their pre-order loots. There's framerate issues. The AI is quite bad. There's occasional graphical glitches. On the plus side, the voice acting is good and the sound effect of guns are good. It's gonna be a fun game for a few hours then it'll get repetitive and people will get bored and move on. Basically, it's like Destiny but it the "Real world". If I had to choose between this and Destiny, I would pick Destiny.

@berserker66666: And how ubisoft can lock game review after a release? if i buy game after official release or even pre release beta i can review it anyway, and nobody literally NOBODY can force me to not to release review if i they won't make a "good" deal to me,

@wexorian: Oh what I meant was pre-release reviews where companies send out their copies of the game before the release date so the review goes up as soon as the game's out. Ubisoft didn't allow that and didn't send those copies to anyone. And now we know why. The Division is painfully mediocre, boring and repetitive. The story, if you can call it that, is lackluster, the boss fights are disappointing, the endgame is lacking and the loots are not that satisfying. It's a 6 out of 10 at max.

Make sure you include in your review how, for a game that requires internet connection, thousands are still struggling to make a character, let alone actually play the game.

I'm really looking forward to playing the game, but wasn't one of the primary points of the alpha and TWO betas to stress test the servers? Even the friend I have that was able to connect got through the opening portions, only to be booted and lose his progress.

Post a review in two weeks and lets here how it is, not 3 days worth of reviewing and then say how much fun it is. Longevity is the most important part of this game imo, if it can't last 2 weeks of fun then I probably won't buy this. I see all the reviews on Steam and I can't help, but wonder why the hell even try this early on. Play it for a considerable amount of time. Or at least make it a return the review and update it based on further playtime.

@Smosh150: i disagree, level 30 is the max level so it wont take that long to max that out and beat the story of the game in a days time, this isn't world of warcraft.

@grin89: Destiny took awhile didn't it? Let's switch to hours here too, more accurate as some people play different amounts a day.

Lemme append that a bit, I mean as in how much fun will it be in the end game. There were a great deal of people who played Destiny for quite awhile despite it being a more limited mmofps. The Division is very similar in that regard, my point is will it be a one and done type of thing. Such as you beat the story then you are bored or what? From the sound of it the game is meant to last with weekly updates so longevity is a major factor here. Playing it for less than a week and then reviewing it tends to negate what the game is hoping to achieve.

@Smosh150: I beat destiny in 7 hours and was shocked at how bad the game was, it had decent gameplay but loot was based on a gamble and story was complete crap. I really want this game to succeed but I don't want to be conned out of my money like bungie did with destiny. I'd like a review asap based on story, gameplay, and loot alone. I'll play an actual mmo if i want end game.

@grin89: And that is fine according to my first post "Or at least make it a return the review and update it based on further playtime". Such as make an initial review, but come back in a few weeks or just some extended playtime and make a supplemental to this review based on those experience. It has been done on the past, however those are usually done by different people and much later than the prior review.

"Where's our review?" they ask

The answer is no where, b/c you can't get into the fracking game. Though I'd wager they have special servers for review copies. Just send out copies, note the keys, send those folks to a private server. Maybe put a few Ubisoft employees in there as plants so the reviewers THINK they're on a public server.

@triplebullet: Ya, so the system is fked. Always online is fked. People have a right to "whine" if they paid $60 for a game that doesn't work. If I buy a car, tv, phone, blender, microwave, they work on the day I buy it, the same with every purchase. Just accepting it and saying it's ok to be broken on day 1 is what's really fked up.

@wtf_666: Unfortunatley a car, blender and what not aren't online games. It would be different if they didn't try and fix it and said **** you guys but this is how most online launches go. I'm not saying they shouldn't be prepared and that the game should be fucked up on release but it should be expected by us. People also need to understand that it WILL be fixed. They have to iron the servers out for the super high player pop. Then the game will be fine. Patience is a virtue.

I was excited for this game, now I'm really not. Seems like Uncharted, meets Tomb Raider, meets Gears Of War (with human enemies), with Assassins Creed visuals. Especially when the bad guys are yelling, they're killing us!!! Sound familiar? Definitely wait for the review. Even then, hmm just don't know. Maybe I'll wait for Hitman, I love Square Enix games. Except Just Cause 3 that is. Here's hoping.

if ubisoft doesn't have faith in their own product than that pretty much tells me that even they know their game isn't worth the full $60 price tag. ashame because I was really looking forward to the new lighting engine in this game.

@Ragnarok1051: alot of people will be sitting on the fence waiting for a review to actually go purchase the game. typically if a game gets a review before its release it means the company has faith in their game that it will do well, like the witcher for example.
