The Division Breaks More Sales Records, Passes Destiny

$330 million in five days is good for a new industry record for the first-week performance of a new IP.

Ubisoft's third-person shooter The Division generated more than $330 million worldwide in its first five days, representing a new record for the company--and the industry overall for a new franchise--during that time. That's according to Ubisoft, which touted The Division's strong performance in a press release today. As announced previously, The Division was already Ubisoft's fastest-selling game ever, breaking 24-hour sales records for the Paris-based publisher.

"The Division taking the top spot in the industry for first week sales of a new franchise is a tremendous achievement," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in a statement. “The Division is the latest example yet of our unique ability to deliver immersive gaming playgrounds that keeps players engaged and that they eagerly share with their friends and community."

Not only is The Division breaking Ubisoft sales records, but it is also reaching new heights for "player engagement." Ubisoft said the game passed 1.2 million peak concurrent players over the weekend. So far, players have spent more than 100 million hours in the apocalyptic version of Manhattan.

By comparison, Activision's Destiny grossed $325 million in its first five days after launch in 2014. Destiny players also accrued 100 million hours in that game during launch week, Activision reported.

"On top of record-breaking sales, player engagement is the highest ever for any Ubisoft title, demonstrating, among other things, that our investments in our online infrastructure and services are paying off," Ubisoft online services VP Stephanie Perotti said. "We are delivering an online experience that's on par with the best in the industry, and that matches the quality and connectivity demanded by The Division and its players."

Ubisoft's $330 million figure for The Division is the estimated worldwide revenue as of March 12 from physical and digital game sales, according to first-party reports, sales charts such as GFK Chart-Track, retail customer sell-through, and internal estimates.

The Division's strong out-of-the-gate performance is not too surprising. Ubisoft previously said the game had the potential to join Destiny, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed to become one of the biggest new IP launches ever. Now, it sounds like The Division has exceeded all of those games and sits at the top.

Launch last week is just the start for The Division, as free updates are coming in April and May, while paid expansions will follow further into the summer. For more on Ubisoft's plans to support The Division after launch, you can read GameSpot's interview with the developers.

Most of the sales comes from that, any Destiny player is starving for any story content in a similar type game, that they just are pulled to it like magnet towards metal.

So that explains why we only see here haters and trolls, the rest are actually out there playing The division.

Ubisoft really delivered a masterpiece this time, they ought to do after that disastrous Watchdogs.

@croxus: I am led to believe this looks like a beta to watchdogs 2, more than anything lol. Especially that the news for watch dogs' sequel came out close to the launch of the division. coincidence? I don't think so

Imagine telling an Atari employee in 198X that in 2016, games would have bigger budgets than Hollywood films, bigger press campaigns than Trump and would be released technically unfinished.

Its the new flavor for this month!

April will bring Dark Souls 3!

As for the Division, give it 2 years and it will also die off like Destiny lol

@goodgamesguy: Doesn't matter how soon it dies, they already made 300+ million on it.... win for them, loss for the early quitters.

@Darkages04: yep that's games these days, hype it up, make a fortune, abandon the game in a year or so and it's on to the next one. Rinse & Repeat. It's a decent game though, better than I thought it would be.

The big question is................will ubisoft do to The Division what it did to Assassin's Creed now that they see what kind of money potential they have on their hands.

Activision saw this and took advantage by turning COD into an annualized franchise. Ubisoft tried to copycat with Ass Creed and it back fired big time!!

@demon-returns: single player adventure game....multiplayer shooter....good comparison, kudos....and just for clarity, how did the decision "back fire big time".....I've heard, rumors mind, that AC sells quite well...or did it "back fire big time" in another way? Come on, the anticipation is killing me......

@Daelusca: you should go read and find out why there isn't an assassins creed coming out this year.... And you'll be able to quench your own anticipation all by yourself!

Come back & tell me what you've learned. Now I'm the one anticipating!

@demon-returns: lol....I see you can't actually respond...tool. There are dozens of speculations as to why AC isn't coming out this year (movie, already released 3 platform AC games, etc.) with the most reasonable one to make room for Watch Dogs 2. Sales wasn't one of the reasonable theories....save for haters.

Never was excited for this game, the art style is so bland and reminds me of CoD shooters. And I have not played a fun Ubisoft games in a long, long time. I dont see how the gfx got anyone excited for this game.

@so_hai: Seems like a lot of CoD haters would have agreed with this as well. Looks underwhelming and no real effort in the visual style.

This games on the exact same trajectory as Destiny. It'll be the game that everyone bitches about in the comments in 2016, because it'll take a year to get it right.

I reckon I'll be holding out for the Taken King equivalent version of The Division. By then they will have optimised the loot economy, added more content and fixed the darkzone.

@flames325: It would not have flopped on PC lol. It would have brought in a multitude of extra profits. The Division is the number 1 game on Steam and I know many people that got it through Uplay as well, so I know the PC crowd is contributing a lot to sales

@flames325: That averages around 3.5 hours of play time a day for a period of 8 days... That means he could go to work for 8 hours, go to the gym and then come home and play til 11 and go to bed. You're dumb.

@walidras: 30 hours in a week is a lot of gaming. Maybe try something else. Also, if you enjoyed the game for 30 he I think it is still very good value.

Ha ha, no. It's because of your ability to hype and market the game. It's a pretty good game to be sure, but I found the Uncharted 4 demo to be far more engaging, delightfully so, and we all know Dark Souls 3 will offer far more bang for the buck value.

@Barighm: yeah, hype the market. don't let the sites review the game before it's released. ship an unfished product. collect money. easy game.

like those records are any sign of a "good game". destiny broke all the records and yet it's garbage as ****. even hardcore fans are bitching lol.
