The Division Breaks More Sales Records, Passes Destiny

$330 million in five days is good for a new industry record for the first-week performance of a new IP.

Ubisoft's third-person shooter The Division generated more than $330 million worldwide in its first five days, representing a new record for the company--and the industry overall for a new franchise--during that time. That's according to Ubisoft, which touted The Division's strong performance in a press release today. As announced previously, The Division was already Ubisoft's fastest-selling game ever, breaking 24-hour sales records for the Paris-based publisher.

"The Division taking the top spot in the industry for first week sales of a new franchise is a tremendous achievement," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in a statement. “The Division is the latest example yet of our unique ability to deliver immersive gaming playgrounds that keeps players engaged and that they eagerly share with their friends and community."

Not only is The Division breaking Ubisoft sales records, but it is also reaching new heights for "player engagement." Ubisoft said the game passed 1.2 million peak concurrent players over the weekend. So far, players have spent more than 100 million hours in the apocalyptic version of Manhattan.

By comparison, Activision's Destiny grossed $325 million in its first five days after launch in 2014. Destiny players also accrued 100 million hours in that game during launch week, Activision reported.

"On top of record-breaking sales, player engagement is the highest ever for any Ubisoft title, demonstrating, among other things, that our investments in our online infrastructure and services are paying off," Ubisoft online services VP Stephanie Perotti said. "We are delivering an online experience that's on par with the best in the industry, and that matches the quality and connectivity demanded by The Division and its players."

Ubisoft's $330 million figure for The Division is the estimated worldwide revenue as of March 12 from physical and digital game sales, according to first-party reports, sales charts such as GFK Chart-Track, retail customer sell-through, and internal estimates.

The Division's strong out-of-the-gate performance is not too surprising. Ubisoft previously said the game had the potential to join Destiny, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed to become one of the biggest new IP launches ever. Now, it sounds like The Division has exceeded all of those games and sits at the top.

Launch last week is just the start for The Division, as free updates are coming in April and May, while paid expansions will follow further into the summer. For more on Ubisoft's plans to support The Division after launch, you can read GameSpot's interview with the developers.

A mindlessly repetitive game that repeats the formula over and over -- and then we wonder why there aren't many innovative games coming out. Now why is that? Because a large contingent of gamers are idiots -- they support the stupidest games and bring the rest of us down with them. Don't believe me? Why in God's world would anyone play Destiny, CoD, or Battlefield? (hint: these are emasculated males who have to find some way to restore their masculine bonafides).

@7tizz: That's the problem, he's not wrong about the game but there's not much else to play on the new consoles, so it automatically sells like hot cakes.

@7tizz: In terms of new multiplayer games to sink many hours into, there isn't much right now. I mean, even I considered buying this game at first, but after playing the beta and seeing what it was gonna be like, I quickly changed my mind. With all the marketing from Ubisoft though, I can see why this game would break records despite not being all that great.

@7tizz: But that's my point, I can't fault them for enjoying it, because any game can be at least a little bit enjoyable if you play it with friends. There's a huge draught in new MP games right now, and people are simply in need of a new game to play with other people. It was bound to sell regardless of the quality.

Personally I'd rather wait for an actual well-designed game, but for a lot of people, the wait is too hard to bear, so they cave in and buy the next best thing. Turns out this game managed to be the next best thing, somehow.

@Rambolike: It's ok, man. We don't all have to like the same things. I dare say, you probably like some games that others think are terrible. Just play the games you enjoy and don't get all flustered because something you don't like is doing well. Also, there are plenty of innovative games coming out all the time. They're called indies. You should check them out since you're smarter (and more masculine) than everyone else. :)

@Rambolike: Its amusing to see you seeking some kind of grand innovative sophisticated experience while resorting to generalized over-used insults toward a group of people who just enjoy a different type of game.

Not everyone has to enjoy what you enjoy.

@Rambolike: The Division is pretty innovative, but it's clear the real issue here is that it's not for you which means it's bad- we get it tough guy.

@heydink: Even though i love Battlefield hell i even still play BF4 on the XOne after 2 years of release but the Division is a lot better the co-op shines on it.It's great to see new IPs selling so great so if you don't like it go to another article the Division really doesn't need you it's doing great in sales

@Rambolike: "and then we wonder why there aren't many innovative games coming out"

It's because we're just not paying attention. The innovation is in the indie/small budget market. AAA is risk averse, but it's all most gamers ever pay attention to, so they assume AAA is all there is to gaming.

I was really hoping this game to be a failure......now, we can expect a bunch on online-only MP crappy games in the future. SP will be a thing of the past.....and gaming with it.

@Evil_Sidekick: Games like this existing does not stop others types of games from existing. If you don't like this kind of game, that's totally fine. Play the games you like and let others play the types of games they like. Hoping for an entire style of game that lots of people enjoy will go away because you don't personally like it is incredibly petty.

Last time I checked two of the biggest games last year were SP only (Fallout 4 and Witcher 3), so let's lay off the melodrama. Online only games have existed for decades and, last time I checked, single player games still not only exist, but are incredibly popular.

@Evil_Sidekick:

I totally understand what you're saying and that was one of my reservations for buying.

If I didn't have a friend who plays I would have skipped. I decided to buy it as cheaply as I could ($35) and I got physical discs on PC instead of digital.

When they do getting around to killing the servers in 5 years, I'll still own something tangible.

@beantownsean: From what I understand, it requires an always-on online connection. If that's the case, what good is the disc going to do if you start them up several years from now and it won't let you play because "error - no connection detected"?

@ridah_2pac:

No, you're exactly right. My point about the disc is a bit of consolation, meaning I'll still own something whereby if I went digital I'd have nothing.

Personally I'd prefer a full-offline line mode as well, I normally avoid online-only all together.

Notice how Eddie phrased the headline so that Ubisoft can't take it out of context to say it's a better game than Destiny. That's craftsmanship.

It is indeed better than Destiny but both are underwhelming in comparison to Borderlands 2.

Marketing and hype do work it seems, most folk seem to enjoy it also.

Not sure myself, will wait for the 'Game of the Year' edition before purchasing.

@off3nc3: A week of twitch tv is probably more than most people have put into the game yet so... I mean I get your opinion, but not many games hold up to being watched for extended periods of time unless they are heavily mechanics based or very creative. D3 viewership isnt burning up the twitch charts.

@RicanV: Do first couple of day sales really show a 'quality product'? I wouldn't say so, not saying it isn't quality but when people are buying a game in their droves at initial launch I'd say that is more to do with marketing and hype. Heck even the reviews were held back.

@kyelo: no. My personal experience deems it a quality product. People continue buying it because they're hearing great things about it and are trying it at friends/relatives.

The sales are a result of a quality product. Hence the "responded". Not sure how the opposite is even possible.
