The Division Breaks More Sales Records, Passes Destiny

$330 million in five days is good for a new industry record for the first-week performance of a new IP.

Ubisoft's third-person shooter The Division generated more than $330 million worldwide in its first five days, representing a new record for the company--and the industry overall for a new franchise--during that time. That's according to Ubisoft, which touted The Division's strong performance in a press release today. As announced previously, The Division was already Ubisoft's fastest-selling game ever, breaking 24-hour sales records for the Paris-based publisher.

"The Division taking the top spot in the industry for first week sales of a new franchise is a tremendous achievement," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in a statement. “The Division is the latest example yet of our unique ability to deliver immersive gaming playgrounds that keeps players engaged and that they eagerly share with their friends and community."

Not only is The Division breaking Ubisoft sales records, but it is also reaching new heights for "player engagement." Ubisoft said the game passed 1.2 million peak concurrent players over the weekend. So far, players have spent more than 100 million hours in the apocalyptic version of Manhattan.

By comparison, Activision's Destiny grossed $325 million in its first five days after launch in 2014. Destiny players also accrued 100 million hours in that game during launch week, Activision reported.

"On top of record-breaking sales, player engagement is the highest ever for any Ubisoft title, demonstrating, among other things, that our investments in our online infrastructure and services are paying off," Ubisoft online services VP Stephanie Perotti said. "We are delivering an online experience that's on par with the best in the industry, and that matches the quality and connectivity demanded by The Division and its players."

Ubisoft's $330 million figure for The Division is the estimated worldwide revenue as of March 12 from physical and digital game sales, according to first-party reports, sales charts such as GFK Chart-Track, retail customer sell-through, and internal estimates.

The Division's strong out-of-the-gate performance is not too surprising. Ubisoft previously said the game had the potential to join Destiny, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed to become one of the biggest new IP launches ever. Now, it sounds like The Division has exceeded all of those games and sits at the top.

Launch last week is just the start for The Division, as free updates are coming in April and May, while paid expansions will follow further into the summer. For more on Ubisoft's plans to support The Division after launch, you can read GameSpot's interview with the developers.

Not a game I'm keen to play, but it's Swedish, like me, so I'm still glad about this. While it doesn't seem as good as the hype would have you believe, The Division is much less divisive than I anticipated. I thought we were gonna have a new Battlefront scenario, with publishers going "it's sold soooo many millions, which means everybody loves it" while the "common folk" (people who comment on gaming sites) are very disappointed.

I think it's people starved for "AAA" games honestly. Not to take anything away from The Division... I mean I love it, but you look at the lack of releases for mainstream gamers that think AAA games are the only games out there and it's pretty slim pickings, especially after the holidays when everyone needs to get their stuff out before Christmas. And when you look at people boohooing over graphics in games like Fallout 4 or the downgrades in Watch Dogs or The Division and people demand more... it's only going to get worse. Big budget devs are dropping like flies.

@jinzo9988: Western big devs are being abandoned because the indies don't want to work under their thumb any more, and Japanese big devs are simply going all mobile. As for casuals, they don't know what's available unless they see it in a TV commercial.

@TheZeroPercent: Destiny initially had a 10 year plan and sold itself on being a subscription-less game. It was designed to keep people engaged for hundreds of hours. The Division doesn't have any of those things, nor does it need it.

Woah! People are so desperately looking for new games to play on their shiny new consoles that they'll willingly settle for a mediocre Ubisoft game, just to have something. That is pretty impressive yo.

This is the first AAA Ubisoft title I've ever purchased...and for PC no less.

I don't think its a fantastic game by any stretch, but there's enough entertainment to continue exploring. I have one friend with whom I've been playing along with and so far we've had some pretty fun encounters.

Like Destiny, I think a game should be able to stand on its own without needing friends. I'd say The Division does a better job of that than Destiny does.

Of course it surpassed Destiny, a console only title. It was released on both next-gen systems AND the PC.

Also, I'm a bit frustrated by it's success, as it's far from original, very repetitive, and has some of the dumbest A.I. i've ever encountered in a modern shooter.

Why is it that in 2016, our A.I. routines are totally dominated by games from the 90's, like Half Life?

@dlaney34: Dumb AI? Have you played the game long enough to base that opinion? How exactly is an AI that flanks you when you reload, stays under cover and goes out of it when you aim at another target, forces you systematically to fall back and play tactical, by any means, "dumb"?

Please reach at least level 20 and try out the missions on hard or the DZ area for these levels before spilling out the nonsense you just have.

The AI in this game is brutal and smart compared to most of the games out there and not only because bosses are bullet sponges, but because they do all of the things I mentioned above and more.

Nothing attracts the masses like a generic, repetitive shooter where you mindlessly massacre thousands of casually dressed citizens as a part of an endless grind for more loot.

Fascinating stuff.

@autumnvarela: That's always been my problem with these types of games, all the enemies look the same. Ubisoft especially is bad for it. Siege only had 2 enemy types! Watchdogs had the same kind of generic baddies too.

I'm actually a little surprised by this if it's true. I feel like Destiny's hype train was even bigger than the one for The Division. Plus, I'd think that the sci-fi setting would be more appealing to a wider range of gamers. I actually almost didn't buy The Division because the semi-realistic setting seems a little bland in comparison.

Oh well, guess I was wrong.

@cristi_k: At least 10% of their sales are from Steam and steam alone. No idea what their sales are for uplay and uplay keys but the availability plays a factor in Division's sales.

A while back Ubisoft said PC was second, or maybe first, in sales for their games.

@silversix_: why would they cry? they got a lot of money for a shitty broken game. then they shit on their fanbase by not fixing it. now they're making destiny 2. and there still will be enough idiots who will give them money. i rather think they're laughing their asses off.

@thang78: because they have a huge fanbase of their game that is literally being stolen by ubi. Worst part it, they can't do shit about it because their garbage engine is too outdated to pump constant content as The Division will do.

I'm not surprised. It's surprisingly enjoyable despite being fairly generic. They get the right stuff right. It kind of shows how much mechanics still matter to a video game (because the story in this game is there but completely ignorable especially given how they side line it by way of how they dole out missions).
