The Division Beta Breaks New IP Record With 6.4 Million Players

People spent an average of five hours in the game during the beta, Ubisoft says.

With The Division's open beta now over, Ubisoft has announced that more than 6.4 million people played it across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The Division's beta is now the "biggest ever for a new game brand on current generation platforms."

By comparison, the Destiny beta in summer 2014 attracted 4.6 million players, though this figure also included PS3 and Xbox 360. At the time, publisher Activision said this was the biggest beta ever for a new IP. The Division is technically a new IP, though it carries the familiar Tom Clancy name.

Ubisoft also announced that The Division beta players logged an average of five hours in the game, with two average hours spent per player in the beta's Dark Zone. Almost 50 percent of players "went rogue," meaning they killed friendly players, while players successfully extracted more than 63 million items.

The Division's open beta started February 18 on Xbox One and came to PS4 and PC a day later. It wrapped up earlier this morning on all platforms.

Its full release is scheduled for March 8. Ubisoft has high hopes for it, as the publisher recently said it could join Destiny, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed to become of the biggest new IP launches ever.

When it comes to The Division I am 100% hooked on the overall story, I just hope that they can find just a couple of moments anywhere near being on par with The Last of Us. When the game was first revealed I thought it was going to be an open world TLOU, then after playing The Witcher 3 I was hoping it'd be a current world shooter version of W3. But it turns out it's going to be more like Destiny, which kind of had me :(

After playing the Beta, I'm a big fan of the mechanics to say the least. The combat mechanics actually remind me A LOT of the Witcher 3 fight mechanics. You have to jump away from attackers. Cover is the equivalent to the perry. Then the spells are your special attacks and healing. It is a super deep combat system.

I love the Dark Zone, too many PVP areas are just that, PVP. While this area brings people together, there is a super tense underlying possibility of people fucking you over. Being alone is super stressful but also a ton of fun. Get to be part of a 4 person squad and you're basically able to kill whoever you want.

My only gripes with the game so far are the inability to move freely when it comes to verticality. I can'tget up on top of a shipping container, have a good look around then just hop off whenever I want. I will sometimes even start to take fire while up on top of something only to try to fast roll to the side, down and off the elevated area, only to hit an invisible wall that stops me from gettin down. You have to find the perfect angle to walk down and even then it sometimes doesn't work. Let me jump off a building to my death. I like games that let me do that. I'd prefer a GTA5 type of freedom when it comes to movement. Other than that, I'm a big fan of the cover system. I like being able to snap to another cover location by holding X. That works well. Sometimes that is the best way to get down from something actually.

What I'm looking forward to is playing more of the story. I get the gameplay, and from what I've seen I don't think there are too many enemy types that we haven't already seen. Hopefully I'm wrong on that and they can keep the enemy types fresh. The little bits of story we're not really central to any overarching plot. The couple that we were able to play felt isolated and inconsequential. Compared to W3 which gave the feeling that everything was connected and that everything I did had consequence in the greater world. I felt like I was part of the evolution of politics in W3. I hope that The Division can come anywhere near giving me these feelings. A game that takes place a week after the largest bio terrorist attack in the world shouldgive me some feeling of attachment to local/national/global politics, shouldn't it?

Ultimately The Division has me counting the days until March 8th. If this game can take the great mechanics it already has and create a world and a story that I actually care about. One that has me thinking about it while I'm away from the game. If The Division can stand on its own and become the metric by which we judge future games. If it is able to do that we could have something really special on our hands.

@VitoNick81: i think you need to stop trying to compare this game to others. when you do that you are bound to be disappointed in some way..if you just play the game for what it is and what its trying to do, you will enjoy the game that much more. this game will never be the witcher 3, or GTA, or any other game, not even destiny. when you start saying i wish it had this like the witcher 3, or l wish it had the movement like in GTA. you aren't going to enjoy the game.

With that said. I really enjoyed the story aspect of the game and cant wait to see how it unfolds, remember,in the beta, they started us at level 4, not level one, and we didnt even see the beginning parts of the game. so i think the story will be more fleshed out when its released. The potential of this game is tremendous. we will begin this game in the middle of Manhattan. they can expand this game over time to include the entire new york area. March 8th cant get here soon enough to get this whole thing started :)

@ricku1967: I did try to ignore the comparisons going in. I DID want this to be it's own thing. It wasn't until after playing for maybe 12 hours that I started to use comparisons for either generic or specific purposes. Yeah I know what you mean about the comparisons. But the comparison to Destiny is not something I came up with. That's been in the title of every other article having to do with The Division. For me, when I saw the original E3 presentation I felt that this game was going to be more of a 3rd person, shooter, co-op, open world, story driven game. But to make it easier to understand as far as game architecture, a comparison to TLOU or W3 I think does justice to what I'm trying to say. It also does it with far fewer words.

It seems like the game architecture has evolved over time. Each game trailer gave a somewhat different perspective on the same game that eventually led us into the Beta which felt like a different game than what I was expecting. I still can't wait to play the full game. I hope to god that the story is one that does its own thing. Like I'd said::: "If The Division can stand on its own and become the metric by which we judge future games. ...we could have something really special on our hands." But if you already are enjoying the story aspect of the game then maybe it is hitting the mark for some or most people. I personally feel like the plot is a great one, but that the execution so far is dull and fell flat. I can't remember ANY characters. There was not a single stand out moment. The video introductions of The Division being called to action were, in a single word, lame. ***Beta SPOILERS*** The pizza thing, which was supposed to be the strong female character into was so freaking stupid. At least I remember that one, I can't even recall anything happening on the other agent activations. Well, I guess one guy had to walk away from people who sounded like they were in trouble....

Going into the 'home base' and talking to people, half of their conversations were corny jokes. The lady who talked me through a couple of story side missions was a stereotypical mom, even though she is ordering me to go on a man-hunt. It all felt in conflict with the plot. I hope this was isolated and the full game has a very different tone. I doubt it will be super different than the bits we got. But hey, maybe other people will enjoy it. Personally I think this game would have done a lot better taking a darker tone. All of the "Story Trailers" that were released months ago were beautifully rendered and showed us a world that had gone to hell right before x-mas. The trailers were heart wrenching! They were dark and true to the apocalyptic idea that the game puts forward. The Beta's characters, into videos, story and side story missions absolutely were not...

God I hope I'm wrong.

@VitoNick81:

Agreed, not being able to just run off a crate got a tad obnoxious. I spent the whole weekend battling it out in the darkZone. My only other complaint was the scaling on how much DZ exp you got compared to how much you lost. I ended stopping because I couldn't ever reach dz 10. The last 5-6 hours or so I was in ds 8-8 with a huge group of griefers (8 or so) I couldn't get exp fast enough before I died and lost it all. I mean it takes an hour to get 1000exp and 4 minutes to lose 700. Super frustrating.

I did not have that problem at all. As long as I never attempted to go rogue reaching level 12 was a piece of cake. Getting XP was easiest when I cycled between extraction zones and helped kill the NPCS for the people extracting. I especially like the extraction zone near the gas station because of the NPCs at the gas station and right around the corner was an alley with a car dealership across the street that had NPCs as well. 8 minutes of killing NPCs solo in that spot raked in well over 1.5K XP

@greekarc8: Yeah, I feel you on that. I was super annoyed a few times by that same situation. I only had one IRL friend who I could meet up with. But especially if there is a group of griefers you should try the auto matchmaking for Dark Zone. You have to leave the DZ first. Or, if there are ass holes in a specific DZ, there is probably another player or two that are also pissed off who will be happy to team up! But if you're stuck in a bad sitch I'd def try to get switched to a different DZ server. Though when there are a team of killers out there, and you're alone. It is a pretty fun game to play stealth and sneak around them. They're usually moving fast and killing everything. You can hide behind cover and usually watch them run past. It had me feeling like a real lone wolf in the real apocalypse. Trying not to die at the hand of the world gone mad. I can't think of another game that had a PVP area quite like this. I'm sure there has been something close?

loved the beta and it is a beta i got stuck in and on some objects and fell through the map a few time after fast traveling but my big beef was the balance with some of the weapons the bolt action M44 rifle had a ridiculous reload time with most of that being an animation for the fifth bullet to being breach loaded put in around 10 seconds with a belt fed 249 taking under 6 seconds. It could be cancelled by wasting a shot or by mashing the stick to activate the scope at a point in the animation. it takes too long and with how slow and causally your character load that last bullet makes it frustrating in a firefight.

Does anyone know if the full game wil be always-online as well? First game (even though it was a beta TEST) I've played with single player lag, in that it took a full second from when i fired a shot to when it actually hit (in the missions, not DZ where lag obviously applies)

If the full game is always online, even if you're playing alone, that's a dealbreaker for me.

Never seen so many gamers take a beta so damn serious. You want a full understanding of the game? You're going to have to buy it.

they said your previous progress would carry over, well mine didn't and had to start from scratch. still very repetitive but at least they put in more enemies. collected all the drones, echoes, phones, etc hoping to get an inside on the background story and also hoping that it would be good. well it was exceedingly disappointing. the survival guide is stupid. the phone calls all were random garbage like hey you want to score some crack or hey you just one free tickets to the nut cracker, the drone was especially pointless it was a shitty blue image of some small dots representing people fighting in the street. i'll say the weapon customization is awesome, but other than that nothing going for it.

@Jew1: they said the previous stuff would not carry over but the same download would still work, they also took out most of the story related stuff from the beta so not to ruin anything before launch of the full game

Other than not enough of the game being unlocked in the beta I had a blast and didn't expect to at all. I was really not interested in TD only gave it a whirl because a friend asked me to play with them but man I got sucked in! I've been protesting Ubi for ages for their terrible pricing and dlc policies, I feel like a bad person for wanting this game but I may finally cave and buy a Ubisoft game.

Hmm, guess I'm the minority then I thought this was a pretty terrible beta. Not in the sense that the game was bad but more so that so much was locked it's hard to really discern if I'll actually like the game or not. I mean when something so basic as enemy spawns/population is basically disabled in the PvE area how are you supposed to get a feel for the game?

My overall impression of the game though was average, it doesn't strike me as amazing and I don't think it was bad, it's just average. Seems like it will be fun for a while and then you'd likely move on, which is basically what I felt about Destiny so I guess the comparisons between the two are valid at least in that regard. There's a lot I think they could do to improve the game but I guess we'll see in time if they actually do that. The DZ in particular though is going to be terrible, the rule set already needs re-working and the hacking even in the beta is ridiculous which will totally kill it for me. I'm not huge into PvP anyway but I do enjoy doing it in small bursts but all the hacking just sucks the fun right out of it, that and the griefing. "Oh you want to leave the DZ, nope I'm just going to sit here and shoot you once every 30 seconds so you can't exit combat!"

Base difficulty of the game also needs adjusting, on normal everything is way too easy and the gear is garbage, why is that even a difficulty, basically gimping yourself to even play on normal at all. Not to mention the game is just more fun on Hard and with a group. I say that as a person that's not all hard core, have to play on the hardest difficulty setting but the base difficulty in this game is too easy.

Everything said I feel this game is really only worth a buy if you view it more as a temporary experience as opposed to a long term "mini MMO." Like you can probably get 30 or so hours of fun out of this game, which compared to other $60 titles is pretty good so in that regard I guess it's worth the money. However if your mindset is that you want to be playing this game a year from now...well I don't really think this is that game. I mean I'm sure they might be making content a year from now but I doubt this game will hold my interest that far out.

I am not sure you even played the beta.

"I say that as a person that's not all hard core, have to play on the hardest difficulty setting but the base difficulty in this game is too easy." Having to play a game on the hardest difficulty in order to enjoy it says more about you than any game you play. No such thing as "too easy" when there are millions of differing opinions. What you like is all you mean. Opinion. It is not a factual observation about the game.

@magnusstorm: You should seriously learn to read

To that first bit, the devs themselves said they reduced the spawns of NPCs in free roam, disabled random patrols and other things. So like I said, hard to get a feel for the game when they turned off basically every system. No perks, they disabled high end drops, limited missions, I could go on.

And I said I'm NOT hardcore, play on the hardest difficulty setting type of person. Meaning I don't do that and I still feel the game is too easy.

So yeah, whatever...

I didn't get to play until about 3pm on Saturday. I ended with 27 hours played (mom, bathrooomm). I don't play many games but dear lord... That was an absolute riot every single minute and I can't wait for more.

I've seen a number of complaints regarding the campaign/non-DZ portion of the game. I will say I wasn't overly impressed by the few missions I experience. That being said, I don't really care too much. I haven't completed a campaign since OG Halo. It's my personal opinion but I only play video games if I'm playing against other people. Something about shooting pre-programmed NPCs over and over doesn't do it for me. I like going up against thinking, adaptive, unpredictable real players.

Virtually every complaint regarding the dark zone is the entire reason I love this game. Greifers? Trolls? Hell yes! It's one of the very few occasions it makes the game more fun. Thinking back, I would have been bored as hell if it wasn't for them. Every person you cross is on edge. You pass and look back. Take a few more steps maybe sight in. What's he gonna do? I think that's his friend over there... He was following you earli - "Oh $h!7 he's going for you. Go go, I'll cover from this alley, get across to xyz." Haha nice, looks like his partner got away. Ooo what's over here looks like some rogues. Oh nope nope get out of here, oh crap they saw me, keep running. Whew, damn that was close. Looks like a few people are going after them, lets see if we can help. Nice, we got em. Let's get out of here before it pops off again. Walking around a couple minutes later - "Isn't that the dudes that were camping you earlier... Ohh yeah, let's get em. You get him, I got the other, we'll head over here afterwards." Wooo got him, oh crap we have people on us GO GO GO GTFO, over here quick, oh crap another person, this way keep running.

I don't see any way in which pre-set instanced battles will ever be more exciting/intense/unpredictable than open world PVP environments such as this. Some claim they couldn't do anything solo and were constantly killed, others and myself claim we usually had to seek out PVP to find it. All this does is prove my point, every single time you enter DZ you're going to have a different experience. It's important to note that players behavior won't accurately reflect behavior in full version. What did you expect? I was just as guilty. By Sunday my friends and I had explored every inch, had every item we wanted, and couldn't progress any further. Everything we have is gone in a few hours... Soooo lets just go kill some people. When people have the ability to progress, need the XP, keys, loot, credits, etc. they're much less inclined to lose it. Early on people would instantly scatter the second someone went rogue. I'm not sure what server or lobby I was on but I never saw a group last more than a few minutes while rogue. I only saw one group (besides mine) that survived a manhunt. Anytime a skull appeared on the map you could see people flood over to that zone. It's beautiful. We spent a good deal of time spreading out solely to look for and hunt rogues. This is the freedom everyone claims they want until they realize you don't get to have your cake and eat it too. If you want to head into the anything goes jungle and fight your way through, this is where it's at. If you're scared about playing against other people, minecraft is pretty popular.

Cover/Movement - When I logged in and noticed the cover system my heart dropped. I was planning on hours of sticking to everything, trying to pull off only to stick to something else in a line of fire. Nothing is perfect, but I'll be damned. A few minutes in I was comfortable and an hour later I was moving smooth as butter. I was astounded by how many things worked with the cover mechanic. They certainly put a bit of work into it. Like any game there are finite variable you get used to after a while. All I can say is if my dumb-ass had very few problems with it, you might just be doing something wrong. That's not to say it isn't perfect, and I don't think it's revolutionary or anything but I want to see the games that those complaining play. Having very little problems I can't imagine this is that terrible in comparison to other games cover mechanics.

Combat - CS is CS. CoD is CoD. BF4 is BF4. Destiny is Destiny. Division is Division. Each one requires you to put the dot on a target and click. There have been so many general terms thrown around to describe numerous complexities to what constitutes "combat." I thought the whole point of games is that we both abide by the exact same parameters. When you move your mouse to the left, your crosshair moves to the left. Mine does the same down to the pixel. We attempt to see who can beat the other. I found it nicely complex and rewarding. I wasn't really even impressed or found it exceptional, it was pretty much exactly what I expected. There is a lot going on. There are a lot of options to consider strategies to utilize. If all you're looking to do is spam grenades and camp hallways then grab your Doritos and Mountain Dew and knock yourself out. This is an RPG. This isn't a world class competitive shooter. It brings something called strategy into the mix when you're not laying prone 500 yards out with a 40x scope randomly picking people off that run around. Did bullets not come out of your weapon when you fired? When you pressed forward did you roll sideways? I found everything to pretty much work as expected... When I put the white dot on someones head and clicked they went dead. If you're finding this "sluggish", or "unresponsive" it's most likely you who is sluggish. If you play checkers you probably think chess is slow and sluggish. By some people's logic this means chess is empirically a bad game. I ride a sport bike and I find your nice sedan unresponsive comparatively so clearly your car is clearly a bad car. Right? I used my skills, abilities, strategies, cover, etc. better than you did and killed you. Don't act like this is some terribly sub-par abomination because you're not down with how it works.

There was a mountain of content left out and much more on the horizon that I can't wait to dig into for hours and hours to come. I'm going to do me, and you keep doing you.

my friends and i had fun with this game. At first i didn't realize it was an RPG shooter, i thought it was a squad based shooter, without rpg elements.

We sure had fun but we won't buy it. The MMO touch it got kinda blows and this is the reason why we'll probably not pick this one up as our experience is that you have to put a lot of time into these kind of games to achieve anything.

Sad I missed the open beta, but the closed beta was enough to get my pre-orders. I. Very excited for the game. I rarely find an MMO that seems fresh enough to entice me, but The Division not only feels fresh, but is a lot of fun to play. Even the closed beta never felt like it got repetitive. I would have loved to get in on the open beta, but I am eager to jump in next month when the game officially starts.

@Pierce_Sparrow: The closed beta put me off, not a massive RPG player so couldn't get my head round the fact it took multiple shots in the head to kill an enemy... then when I read up on it it's standard for RPG'S to be like that. So gave the open beta a go before ruling out completely and enjoyed it much more having an open mind. To be fair the enemies weren't quite as bullet proof which I was happy to see, and didn't just seem to run at you in a straight line when you were pummelling them with virtual bullets. Hopefully the complete game will improve on the open beta like the open beta improved on the closed beta.

@birzinga: the thing that people seem to neglect when it come to this game is that you need to mod your weapons, get better weapons as you level up. and know how to aim, if you do that, the mobs arent nearly as "bullet spongy" as most make it out to be. by midway through the open beta i was killing 3 with one clip and taking out some with 1 head shot with a sniper rifle. i think the majority of the people complaining are the ones who didnt put in the time to mod their weapons. they played it for 5 minuets and gave up.

@ricku1967: I agree the people complaining are the ones who didn't put enough time into the game, and maybe like myself, didn't really understand the RPG element of it, not being a massive RPG player. I would urge people to have another go though, I did when I understood the concept more and enjoyed it a lot, enough to pre order. What system you playing on ricku1967?

Admittedly wasn't crazy about the game when playing alone, then I brought a friend along and had a blast. The dark zone is a great idea, full of chaos and moral debauchery.

@InYourMouf: "Scans area sees only 3 people at extraction point 20 seconds on clock all standing in the circle grouped up......" "Lobs grenade, fires remote mine, sprints forward shotgun to the face" Loot up extract that ship out :)

@InYourMouf: If you have no friends available. there is matchmaking for every zone and every part of the game, you are never alone, unless you choose to be.

@wallacom: I'm not big on grouping with strangers. I'd rather kill them.

This game looks like a fresh break from FPS. The story I'm sure will go more in depth. But what they showed us in Beta alone was enough to keep me and my friends glued to it as much as possible. We logged at least 20+ hrs. To break quick to the cons of the game, trading from player to player would be a nice add. Inspecting other player's gear and stuff would be pretty cool to. The ability to crouch or lay prone is probably my biggest want. Other than those few minuscule things, this game has a lot of potential. Even the annoying deaths and getting ganked in the DZ was fun when all said and done. Got a bunch of good video's from some epic battles out of it. Now impatiently awaiting the release. Thank God I live on the west coast, I get it around 9pm instead of having to wait til midnight...lol

@tikihudson: i never liked trading in games, it has the potential for players to be lazy..why do the super hard mission for a particular weapon, you can only get doing that mission, if you can just get it from another player via trade? dont like that, I think players should earn everything they get in a game themselves.

In this game, i think you would get killed more often if it had crouch and the ability to go prone. Besides, you crouch enough when you are behind cover. you can sneak up on mobs well enough if you just go from cover to cover. when you are going cover to cover, you are crouched,

@tikihudson: inspecting other other players will definitely be added. Don't forget this game will be getting updated all the time. I'm anxiously waiting until march 8th as well, I played the beta nonstop.

@tikihudson: Definitely be able to inspect another player, trading i think ruins games.

The only concern I have is the going rogue rewards. The risk in the dark zone FAR outweighs the reward at this point. If that ratio makes it to live, rogues will only be high end players not concerned about credits or rank and just want to gank lowbies and troll people. If you go rogue and get up to rank 5 and actually survive, there should be some pretty good rewards waiting for you IMO.

@jgn77: if the rewards for going rogue where high, you will have a zone full of nothing but rogue players. after all, in the story line, its frowned upon to go against the directive 51 order, so why would they reward you for that? as for level 30 players. the developer already stated that when you are level 30, you will be only going against other level 30 players, not lower level players. each zone of the DZ has a level cap. that's why in the beta if you were level 8 and a team mate was level 7, they couldn't join you in the DZ.
