The Deus Ex Series Isn't Dead; Next Game Already Being Discussed

Developer Eidos Montreal is busy with an Avengers game now, but a new Deus Ex game could still happen.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Square Enix put the Deus Ex series on hiatus after underwhelming sales of the latest entry, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. It's not true that the series is going away forever, Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda said in a new interview. In fact, plans--at least preliminary plans--are already underway for a new instalment.

"We have never said anything about discontinuing that title but for some reason that's the rumour out on the market," he told in a wide-ranging interview.

That being said, Matsuda strongly suggested that the Deus Ex series is taking a breather for the time behind. Series developer Eidos Montreal is currently working on an Avengers game, and understandably it sounds like that project is taking up the lion's share of the studio's development resources.

"What I can say is Eidos Montreal has always developed Deus Ex, and the issue is we do not have limitless resources," Matsuda said. "We have several big titles that we work with and that's partly a factor in what our lineup looks like. Of course, it would be ideal if we could work on all of them all of the time, but the fact of the matter is some titles have to wait their turn. The reason there isn't a Deus Ex right now is just a product of our development lineup because there are other titles we are working on."

Matsuda added that Deus Ex is a "very important franchise" for Square Enix overall, adding that some discussions are already being had about what Square Enix wants to do with the next Deus Ex game. No further details are available at this time, however.

Mankind Divided launched in August 2016 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. GameSpot's Mankind Divided review scored it an 8/10, with reviewer Edmond Tran writing, "Mankind Divided is still a uniquely fulfilling experience, one which feels rare in games today."
