The Dead Space Series Could Have Been System Shock 3 if it Weren't for Resident Evil 4

"'Yeah, it's almost like they decided to make Resident Evil 4 in space,' which is exactly what we were doing."

Dead Space designers Ben Wanat and Wright Bagwell stated in a recent interview that Resident Evil 4 was a huge inspiration for the team, even to the extent of shifting them away from the original plan to make a sequel to the beloved System Shock series.

"Originally, we were pushing around this idea of maybe we could make System Shock 3. And you can look at the Dead Space blueprint and be like, 'Oh, this is kind of like System Shock,'" Wanat told PC Gamer. The trouble with that plan, though, is it will always be a huge challenge to make a modern System Shock game that lives up to the expectations of its fervent community. "To do a System Shock 3, you're really tackling a monumental task, to make people happy with a sequel that wasn't made by the same team as the original," he said.

Now Playing: Resident Evil 4 Episode 1 - Resident Kinevil

"When Resident Evil 4 came out, we were just awestruck by it," Wanat said. "We were all playing it and we were like, 'Holy shit, this is a really awesome game. They're actually trying to tell a story; they've got some cool cinematics; the gameplay systems are fixing a lot of problems, bringing it into this action realm but keeping this intense horror feel to it. It was this amazing combination and--of, the enemies were so freakin' cool."

Wanat went as far as to admit that what ultimately became Dead Space was an unabashed attempt to make Resident Evil 4 in space. To read the full interview, head over to PC Gamer.

My favorite IP from last gen, the first two games are absolute classics in my opinion, the third is weaker in comparison but not without its charm either. I love Resi4 too but i think Dead Space surpassed its inspiration in every way.

@nadsat-77: The third isn't really a bad game, it's actually very good from a purely objective viewpoint, but it got too shooty and wasn't a horror game anymore. Even worse, it was one of the first "big" games to add co-op, but remove local co-op and make it online only.

@Barighm: I agree, that's why i said in comparison, it definitely lost some of the survival horror feel of the series with the more action oriented approach but on its own DS3 is still better than most third person shooters out there imo.

That franchise will always remain one of my favorite. Everything behind it... the universe, the settings, the lore, the way the necromorphs come to life is so disturbing and yet unique. I really enjoyed all 3 games, spent so much time on DS2 multiplayer back then... I cant believe they would let this franchise go for good...

Such a shame, it could've been a great horror game if it didn't rely on predictable jumpscares and that silly dismemberment system.

@Prats1993: This ''silly'' dismemberment system was actually much different and interesting than the usual shoot to the head thing. The entire Dead Space serie has been great.

Man, Resident Evil 4 is a great game but it's done a lot of damage to the industry with everyone trying to copy it's success. The Resident Evil series itself went full action without realizing what made 4 so great.

@catsimboy: Street Fighter 2/Virtua Fighter/Devil May Cry were also become successful and everyone tried to copy their success.it is the way that this industry.(even the success of NES inspired Sega to make their own console)

@catsimboy: With 4 there was still a constant feeling of dread that the later RE's lost in favour of mind numbing action.
