The Darkness II delayed to February 7

2K Games pushes Digital Extremes' sci-fi FPS to next year on all platforms; game will be playable at Comic-Con 2011 this week.

It looks as if The Darkness II will stay cloaked in shadow for longer than expected. 2K Games confirmed for GameSpot today that it has pushed The Darkness II beyond its previously announced October 4 release date. The publisher now expects to release the Digital Extremes-developed title for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on February 7 in North America and February 10 internationally.

The Darkness II believes quad-wielding is the future.
The Darkness II believes quad-wielding is the future.

The Darkness II will pick up several years after the events of the well-regarded original, with players once again taking the role of Jackie Estacado, now the don of the Franchetti clan. While he has controlled the chaotic powers inside him since the events of the first game, a reasonless attempt on his life kick-starts a full-on mob war in New York, a perfect situation for the Darkness to reemerge.

While the original Darkness game was made by Starbreeze Studios (The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay), development for the second installment has been entrusted to Digital Extremes. The Canadian studio is perhaps best known for 2008's third-person action game Dark Sector, but it has more recently been working on the PC port of THQ's Homefront, as well as the multiplayer mode of 2K Marin's BioShock 2.

Along with news of the delay, 2K Games confirmed The Darkness II's presence at Comic-Con 2011, which descends on San Diego July 21-24. The publisher will be hosting a panel for the game on July 21 at 12:00 p.m., and it will feature voice actor and Faith No More singer Mike Patton. Talent from franchise creator Top Cow Productions, as well as Digital Extremes, will also be on hand.

I really enjoyed the original Darkness, i found it quite refreshing in addition to being dark and moody it also contained a good story. However i gotta say that imo D2 looks like its slipped into the 'generic run-n-gun' trap albeit with 'Darkness powers'. I hope im wrong, but i guess time will tell.

@jethrovegas About Scrolls, I meant it wouldn't have been considered so great if it only had two enemy types. Sorry for the typo

@jethrovegas What, because of repeat animations a horrible lame story? If I'm playing next years Madden and there's only one tackle animation, that's lame!!! I don't know what's confusing about that? Jus like Borderlands, I couldn't stand the repeat use of same three rock patterns they used for the entire games mountains and ground backgrounds, that's lame! What is this nowadays, 1943 looney tunes were you see the same chair and table go by over and over and over? How many millions do they get to make these games?? If you changed nothing about Elder Scrolls Oblivion, except that the game only had two enemy types it would be regarded ad one of the best games ever, it would be recognized as a great game with some lame aspects. Who wants to see the exact same animation a million times over unless it's a gun reload animation?? Sorry but I strive to play quality games

no enough darkness powers for me i seen the same finishing move where the thing comes out the enemy's stomach every time. In the comic book the main character had an army of those little demons who would do most of the killing and all i seen was 1 little guy drive a truck through a door. i would like to see a lot more availability of the darkness powers and better weapons. It should be like combining Hit Man with Prototype lol then u could see my idea of the best video game of the comic book of "The Darkness"

I'd kind a guessed that several games slated for release in october and november would start to be delayed about now. There is a lot of competition at that time (Arkham City, BF3, MW3, Skyrim) and I was surprised that developers put so many games up for release during that period. So we've had Mass Effect 3, Ghost Recon and now The Darkness 2 drop out of that time slot.

The first Darkness was forgettable at best, I'm sorry folks. That game was nothin but boring straight forward gunplay with forgettable enemys and story. I probably played about 2-3 hours and ran in back to gamestop to get my money back. It was so lame that only one of you snake things ever ate the heart, WTF?? So the other one never eats but it's still alive?? And for something you might do hundreds of times during one Play through it's confusing that they only made one animation of the one the right grabs the heart, the one on the left try's to take it from the one on the right but can't, and after seeing that three times I was highly irritated by the PS1 feeling that gave me. I definite not buy

@Dasim64, Well, no duh, of course we all know it's not just about polishing it up, lol. But still, if they're gonna skip releasing during the last qtr of this year, the least they CAN do is make sure it also looks & performs at its best. Might as well use the timeframe to their advantage, I say.

Oh poo....oh well, that's not necessarily a bad thing. For one, it's gonna get to crowded around that time of the year anyway. Secondly that gives me an opportunity to eventually squeeze in the first one, lol.

Let's hope the Angelus is going to be somehow involved in this one. Or even the Witchblade! :D (For those who don't read the comic: The Angelus is pretty much the opposite of the Darkness. The Light side. And the Witchblade is in between the two, meaning it is the balance.)

2K is awesome. the first darkness was pretty good. it's too bad it didn't have much to do but certainly eating hearts and pulling special moves was great. plus, 2K is doing the right thing delaying it. bioshock was awesome, bioshock 2 aswell, bioshock infinite will be epic, borderlands.... 2K FTW!

Better, that they fix up more things than releasing it early. besides it lightens the load of all the great games coming out between Fall/winter months.

As much as I want to play this game (first one was one of my favorite games this gen) I totally understand the move. This game would have been annihilated had it been released in Q4 of 2011, just way to many bigger name games being released around the same time. Hopefully with a February release it will have room to breath and more opportunity to catch consumers' eyes.

It's for the best. There are way too many games coming out in that window. I'm a HUGE fan of the first game, and even I'd've been hard-pressed to pick this up on day one. Whereas in February, it shouldn't be a problem. I really hope Digital Extremes picks up where Starbreeze left off.

Same as everyones saying, I'm sorta glad they pushed it back. There are so many amazing games coming out in the period of September to December and I had no idea how I was going to play them all, let alone get them in the first place. But I still can't wait! :D

In a way, I'm actually glad they're delaying it until February because there's already a ton of games out this year I still need to play and even more being released between now and the end of the year. Plus I'll get a chance to play through the first Darkness again before the sequel comes out.

Not a bad move. It'll give them more time to work on it and they're more likely to sell more since it's not coming out at the same time as a lot of other huge games.

In is good to delay the Darkness 2 in order to have all the gliches worked out.I'm patient besides this will help make the Darkness 2 a great game instead of a rushed O.K game.

Much better to delay games 3-4 months than push them out. That's how you get Korriban in KOTOR 2. I'd rather wait and get the complete package. Also, Dasim64's right, there are some big big games coming out toward the end of the year that are going to chew up some wallets. This way In Feb, it's after the big boys and before the next wave of the 2012ers

Yeah... October is not a good month to release this game in. February will give it a fighting chance and it deserves it. I doubt they are still working on the game. It will be sitting in storage waiting to be shipped at a time when it has some breathing room.

ha ha this isn't them polishing the game. This is them admitting that they'll get their asses handed to them on a platter if they put this out late in the year when all the really big titles are coming out. I don't blame them at all but don't make it out to be more than it is simply because you are a fan of the series. They're just making a smart financial move with this announcement.
