The Best Version of Pac-Man May Be Getting a Sequel

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 looks to be in development.

There have been many permutations of Pac-Man over the years, but it's Pac-Man Championship Edition that many (correctly) consider to be the best. And it now looks like it's getting a sequel.

As discovered by Twitter sleuth lifelower, listings for PC, PS4, and Xbox One versions of something called Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 have shown up Korea's game ratings board. Games are often leaked through foreign ratings boards like this, and it could suggest a release is not especially far away.

We've contacted Bandai Namco for confirmation that the game is in development. In the unlikely event it decides to comment, we'll report back.

Pac-Man Championship Edition was first released for Xbox 360 as an Xbox Live Arcade game in 2007 (and has subsequently been ported to numerous other platforms). It's one of the best modern-day reimaginings of a classic game we've seen. It retains the basic format of Pac-Man--you're still a weird, yellow blob who eats dots and avoids ghosts--but introduces new elements, levels, modes, neon graphics, and an excellent soundtrack. A follow-up, Pac-Man CE DX, expanded on this further in 2010 with more modes and content. A 2013 update to that added even more content, rebranding the game as the DX+ edition.

The original Pac-Man celebrated its 36th anniversary this year. The latest game in the series, mobile game Pac-Man 256, was just recently released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
