The Best PC Games of 2015

Desktop doyens.

The enduring appeal of the PC has always come from its diversity. It's the home of immensely intricate RTSes, along with cutthroat and complex MOBAs that amass millions of combatants each month. It's the platform to find merciless and twitchy FPSes, time-sinking management simulators, life-absorbing digital card games, virtual reality experiments, extravagant blockbusters, and of course leagues of original, abstract, unconventional curios.

While the PC is the spiritual home of more daring and distinct games (standout 2015 entrants include The Beginner's Guide and Undertale), it also offered an embarrassment of riches in terms of traditional AAA titles. Every entrant in our top five has also been developed for consoles, but they are nevertheless the most ambitious, expansive, and rewarding games you’ll play this year.

Now Playing: Top 5 PC Games of 2015

We could hardly compile a list of 2015's best PC games without mentioning The Witcher 3, a title which sets a new benchmark for fantasy action-RPGs. Vastness and longevity are not always desirable qualities in their own right, but in this case the story of supernatural contract killer Geralt of Rivia spans more than 100 hours and so much of it will linger in the memory. Your journey across the immense Northern Kingdoms involves genuinely interesting characters, memorable locations, major plot decisions that fall on your shoulders, and awe-inspiring monsters to free from the earth. It's the attention to detail, the sharp writing, the vivid characters, and the epic heroics that makes every hour enjoyable.

GameSpot's Witcher 3 review described this open-world RPG as one of the greatest games of all time.
GameSpot's Witcher 3 review described this open-world RPG as one of the greatest games of all time.

It would be foolish not to mention Rocket League as well; it’s clearly the best multiplayer game released this year. This is a soccer title with a perverse, ingenious twist: the footballers have been replaced by cars. Your shiny blocks of metal and carbon fiber lack the extremities required for nuanced ball control, yet can go from 0-60 in a couple of seconds. The result is a masterfully berserk depiction of the beautiful game, with players tumbling across stadiums, boosting their thrusters skyward, flipping and twisting their rollcages with a bloodthirsty desire to collide with a giant beach ball. While this chaotic spin on soccer seems like an awful idea on paper, in practice it's an inelegant masterpiece, eliciting an explosion of emotions in players.

The Metal Gear series is one with PlayStation and the MSX consoles at its roots, but Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain represents a change in direction at Konami, being the first in the series to launch day-and-date alongside the console editions. It also happens to be the greatest stealth game of all time, replacing the series' room-by-room level structure with a vast stretch of Afghan desert. The freedom in your approach to each mission adds a dazzling degree of strategy and planning, something that had a natural limit in previous games. The AI, which has always been excellent throughout the series, now has the freedom to be truly spectacular, with enemies reacting and adapting to signs of your presence. It's by no means perfect (the story’s final stretch being particularly divisive) but this is an extraordinary achievement nonetheless.

Rocket League is one of the year's best surprises, launching with little fanfare yet now regarded as a standout multiplayer game of its age.
Rocket League is one of the year's best surprises, launching with little fanfare yet now regarded as a standout multiplayer game of its age.

Fallout 4 represents another remarkable achievement in a year packed with acclaimed, high profile games. Even for a Bethesda title, the degree of freedom offered to the player here is outstanding. A whole library of side-quests can be discovered and pursued at your convenience, while your instruments of death in its bleak world can be crafted and modified to your heart’s content. Dig deeper and you’ll discover further options to strengthen amour, mix your own alchemy of potions, and pick out your favourites from an extensive menu of imaginative ability perks. Then there’s options to build entire structures, optionally with their own electrical circuits and horticultural ecosystems, from the materials you have scavenged along the way. Fallout 4 is fundamentally an archaic game, thrusting you into its world with little guidance or the slickened mollycoddling of modern AAA games. What it offers instead is a promise that every moment of curiosity, and every creative thought you conjure in its world, will be handsomely rewarded.

The fifth entrant in our list is Kerbal Space Program, a compulsive simulation of an Apollo mission. It strikes a wonderful balance, educating players on the intricacies of putting a man on the moon while offering satisfying trial-and-error gameplay. The semi-real physics model is complex, but still simplified compared to what NASA gets up to. It's not quite rocket science, but when weeks of iterating finally carry your adorable Kerbal into the depths of space, you’ll certainly feel like a genius. "Edutainment" is too dirty a word for the joy it provides, but when you realise you didn’t include enough oxygen for the trip back, you’ll have learned an important lesson.

The Witcher III is a true masterpiece and deserves GOTY in my opinion. MGS V could have been a true masterpiece, and it makes me so sad that one of my favorite series of all time has been ruined.

No offense to whom likes them.. but what are Rocket League and Kerbal Space Program doing on this list while Starcraft Legacy of the Void ( WTF this wasn't incuded in the best expansion also !?..), Heroes of the Storm or Pillars of Eternity are not on the list ?... The Witcher 3, Fallout 4 and MGS are the big "hits" of the year so is kinda normal to be included ( on all platforms) but in my opinion The Best PC Game list is not quite right...

@Fla14: Yup, cosign, Pillars Of Eternity should have been on this list, same with Halo5 and Forza6 on the xbox one list. Hell, Fallout is one of my favorite series of all time and I liked Fallout 4, but Pillars is so much better of an rpg and just as a game to.

@Fla14: I don't know about Rocket League, but Kerbal Space Program is a legit awesome experience that I've probably sunk waay to many hours into.

I wouldn't pick it as GOTY but it's very entertaining.

I'm not saying that either are not good but come on Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void or Pillars of Eternity deserve more to be on the list.

I am/was very disappointed with the PC games this year, especially AAA game selections. They were all ports of console games, which in of its self not that bad, but they were such shoddy ports and plagued with tons of problems from glitches to localization. I will admit the Witcher 3 was not only an incredible game but played pretty well for me, even though many of my friends and around facebook there was a ton of people having problems.

Revival of classic games like Grandia II Anniversary Edition, and a great port of The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter, deserve special praise or Grand Theft Auto 5 for pc that is not only a very deft port but also a great ass game.

I am very happy with the state of PC gaming today and love it as much as console gaming but I wish there was less director's cuts, and enhanced editions, and especially early access games. During the overly long and lethargic 7th gen of gaming, great AAA pc games built for pc only was frequent and wonderful, but since the 8th gen have been stale. I am happy to see so many console games coming to PC but I wish they would not use pc gamers as game testers who buy the game at launch and through complaints fix many problems through update after update.

I would have swore that MGS V or Fallout 4 would win this year. But MGS V started amazing, then fell on it's face after I realized it was an unfinished, incomplete game. It's obvious with all the different camos, etc. Could have been so much more. Then Fallout 4 has failed to capture my interest after 12 hours with it. And I find myself going back to finish Witcher 3 and now appreciate the game for the amount of detail and quality content it has. I was upset because of the downgrade when it first released because I expected more, but it truly shines above the rest. GJ CD Projekt Red. Leave the consoles in the dust next time.

ok guys i just had to make a new account to post a comment here (since my old acc that i have made on gamespot is from 2009 and i cant remember the pass nor the username ).i said that so some viewers can know the estimated date of when i started to read gamespot reviews before buying games . maybe some ppl remember those times gamespot had scores like 8.9 or 8.8 for games and so on . and also gamespot scoring had 5 categories like gameplay and graphics and etc for each game and the final score of the game was the average of them .. anyways so back to this topic i am playing games for more than 17 years of my life which the last 7 years have been mostly online games like WOW and LOL .
and right now from the new generation consoles i have PS4 (i have all other previous generation consoles too) and plus an MSi GE 62 apache pro gaming laptop .
i also said thaese so u guys know what im going to write after is a wise judgment .
ok so finally here is my opinion : i think no console can ever get the place of PC gamins never ever !
for example u see games like witcher (1-2-3) which come at each year and make millions of players among the world to play them ..ok thats right but can u tell me how long will they last ? in my opinion 1-2-3 or maximum 6 month .
but speaking of a PC game cmon just think about games like WOW or LOL .im playing lol for almost 3 years now and i can never get tired of it or also path of exile which i recently started playing it with alot of IMBA nice builds , items , skill trees . visualization and etc . so my point is PC games like those that i mentioned above are games for a LIFE . i remember very good and bad moments of my life with LOL or WOW but games like witcher which mostly last for 1-2 months top can never fill that spot of my life . so my vote now and for ever goes to pc games and specially the online ones like LOL - wow and POE , which have made my life with alot of memories :))

@paybrig: I see where you are coming from but there are many different genres in the hobby we all love called gaming. The games you mentioned above 'games for life' are MMOs and many time not for everyone. I spent a few years playing some WOW, EQ2, and LOTRO but having gamed for decades even those games lose their appeal after a while, like any other. Consoles are in no way inferior to pc as is pc is less than any console. It is just another way to consume games.

There is no better value then consoles as a long term investment. No matter what video you see - no one can build a gaming pc of equivalent power to current 8th gen consoles for $300-350 as highly subsidized as console are. And they last for years, while a gaming pc quickly needs updated hardware and operating systems. Take, for example the xbox 360, still has great AAA games released for the 10 yr old console and they look pretty damn amazing to. I gurantee no one is designing games for a 10 yr old pc running windows xp/vista and a geforce 7600 card, meanwhile the majority of AAA games will not only be designed for console architecture but also freq be exclusive for many many years to come.

MMOs can fulfill all that some gamers need, but the shear amount of choices and experiences that consoles can offer is not only enjoyable but affordable as consoles games can be bought, traded, resold, and given away. Consoles are also becoming a very fun home to MMOs and MOBAs aplenty with less play-to-win models as pc has. Many console exclusives are just as fun as pc - for instance the Atelier series (dozen of games over several years) - that shit like to drove me insane but it is one I enjoyed immensely. I personally spent years and thousand of hours on EQOA for the ps2 getting a ton of 'games for life' under my belt ..... all on a console 12 yrs earlier.

Witcher 3. I've continued to play it despite buying Fallout 4 which I've barely gotten into. Both have so much to do but the quests and side quests and characters are far more interesting to me.

And btw I'm this is not coming from a Bethesda fanboy. Haha.

As an RPG fan, the Witcher 3 has zero interesting loot progression and zero interesting character skill progression. When it tries to be funny it's not and often painfully so. It is technically great but as with the other two - I threw hour after hour after hour into the game and never, ever got sucked in. Same with W1 and W2. Geralt, frankly, is boring. Dandelion made me want to punch the screen. The dwarf? Cliche and a half.

On the other hand, I had Pillars of Eternity, remastered Divinity, and F4 to spend hundreds of hours on and could not pry myself away from them.

On edit: witcher magic and potion system has always sucked too. And w3 is more a console game than pc. Played that on my ps4, F4 on my pc - both seemed the right choice for those respective platforms. Last edit: for great rpg writing/voice acting please see remastered Divinity with all the great, funny, insightful dialog and performances. Puts W3 to shame.

Seriously though, Divinity: OS was my 2014's GOTY. I'm so excited for the sequel. Then we have upcoming games like Underworld Ascendant, System Shock 3, Escape from Tarkov, Total Warhammer, XCom 2 etc. Really glad to see all these old school-ish, well made games return.

@rebfaction: I can't really argue against that, but in my experience the game was no worse at launch than most/all other games of its caliber... but that shouldn't be an excuse, TW3 could have used another 3 months in the oven, but personally I was happy with it day one!

@GH05T-666: LOTV was easily the best PC Exclusive of this year. Such an incredible game. 15-20 hours long campaign with great gameplay, presentation, mission design and best story in SC2 trilogy.

Then on top of that you have re-balanced multiplayer that changes the way the game is played. Action happens on screen a lot faster now due to more micro intensive units, that can be used for hit and run tactics early on.

Then you have tutorials, map editor, skirmishes, new co-op mode and so on. And you don't even need first two games to play it. It's worth every penny. Such a shame that it wasn't included but then again, it's not surprising. 95% gamespot's crew has no idea about PC gaming.

I think they should have done a "exclusive" goty for every platform then do a multi-platform goty game composing the ps4-xbox-pc and finally a "goty" because there's simply too much games in pc you left behind, sure the best one I played this year on PC it's the witcher, yet there should be some honorable mentions here, like cities skylines, HOTN, Starcraft 2 LOTV, undertale, etc. because well I see the witcher on every platform and it feels stupid really.
