Best Cheap Gaming Monitor 2022: Budget Monitors For Gaming And Productivity

We've rounded up the best budget gaming monitors, which includes 4K, 1440p, and ultrawide options, among others.

You don't need to spend an exorbitant amount of money to get a great gaming monitor. While top-of-the-line monitors can be beneficial for competitive gaming and for showing off games in their best form (provided you have a capable rig, of course), most PC gamers can probably get by just fine with reasonably priced monitors around $300 or less. Regardless of budget, you still want to pick a monitor that's right for what you're playing. We've rounded up the best cheap gaming monitors in 2022. We'll continue to add more picks to this list as new monitors release. Each year, it seems as if manufacturers push the bar even further in terms of quality for a decent price.

As mentioned, you should shop for monitors with your needs in mind. FPS and competitive gamers will want a monitor with a high refresh rate--at least 144Hz--to get the edge on their competitors. Those who are more interested in single-player games and want the best in picture quality may go for an ultrawide monitor or even one with a 4K resolution and HDR support to get the most vibrant image.

A number of factors played a role in our picks--the biggest one being our experience with the respective companies and their monitors. We've also considered each monitor's technical specifications, user reviews, and availability, and where possible, we tried to stay under $300 as well--though a couple of our recommendations that we've included for various reasons have steeper prices.

Some of these monitors are tiny, especially for 4K. I couldn't imagine running 4K on a 27" monitor. I have a 24" 1080p monitor that I use for my WFH life and it's not nearly enough screen.

My main PC screen is 34" 144Hz at 2K, I couldn't imagine going smaller.

@seanwil545: Hmm .. I am so old, having worked off a 17" monitor and learned computers on a smaller screen than that.

Well real estate is not everything, and monitors come in many flavors for different reasons. Esports gamer tend to prefer 24", and 240mhz and rarely want to go bigger just to allow peripheral vision to take it all in. Photographers complain that too big of screens invite surrounding lite to interfere with color correction. And video editors just want more of them.

I personally and many others also, would not want such a large screen 34" at 2k because you would start to notice loose pixel density around text, and gaming like RTS games. The reason phone screen look so good is because they squeeze 1080p, 2k down to tiny 5" to 6" of screen. Some folks just want the biggest screen possible and use TVs as monitor, even though the fuzzy pixel density gives them headaches, while others will put 4k in 24" and love it, like this one https://www.amazon.com/LG-24UD58-B-24-Inch-Monitor-FreeSync/dp/B01LPNKFK0/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=4k+monitor+24+inch&qid=1614553448&sr=8-3

A sweet spot is 2k at 25-28" or 4k above 27". Right now I use a benQ IPS 75mhz, 27" HDR 2k monitor for gaming and prefer it over a Samsung 4k 32" monitor at work. I game pretty close and the density is sic, almost like silk. Text is nutty. Lines are always solid, even when almost dark. I would love to try a 4k IPS ultrawide for sure, but large monitors are only great if they look good, and that is the most important thing.

"Best Cheap Gaming Monitors"

Err....if you're getting a gaming monitor, you can get best or cheap, but certainly not both.

And did you seriously reuse last year's article? Make a new one, christ.

Some of the monitors above are nearly 35% higher then they should be. Try to wait the pandemic out if you can, if not go cheap or buy used.

Save your money for newer models next year at better prices and that have the features that can take advantage of the new consoles coming out as well.

Oh goodness, prices have jumped in just four days. Prices are gouged to death right now. Less then six months ago prices where nearly 25% less. If monitor costs $100 it now costs 125$, 200$ now 250$ If you can possibly wait till this fall or next spring, would be good advice because just about everything has increased too much l

@santinegrete: A lot of it really depends on what you use monitors for. I won't go into detail about work/professional use- but stick to gaming. If all you play is strategy, RPG, wow, or adventure like games then a IPS panel, with HDR, tons of color/light options monitor would suit you better then a TN, VA, super fast mhz monitor that does FPS, Racing, MOBAs like gaming best.

It is like vehicle options people pay for, but rarely ever use. And buying a monitor that is built towards the games you play the most will give peeps the best bang for their bucks. I am using a 3 yr old - benq IPS, HDR, 27", 75mhz, 5ms latency, with great options and features. For the RPG types of games I play, it is amazing. But if I mostly played FPS, the slower framerates may not be optimal. And when you compare this monitor, against a high speed tn/va panel, you can immediately notice how much nicer the colors and brightness is.

Higher priced monitors, close the differences between the two for sure, but that may be money better spent elsewhere.

@sippio: So pixel density is what makes some monitors so silky smooth and why many phones are oled well before TV screens and monitor, as it is harder to stretch sooo much awesome while keeping the dozens of options that a computer monitor may need. 1080p looks good upto 24" 25" but looks worse any larger. 2k or 1440p looks great at 25" -32" but starts looking thin any larger. And 4k looks good from there on. Squeezing in so many pixels into a tight area is not only gorgeous but can be easier on your eyes. People who play FPS most freq do not like going above 24"-25" because they cannot use peripheral vision as well. Meanwhile us RPG/ adventure gamers love the biggest we can get, but for the most part 27" up is the sweet spots. Now the jump from 1080p to 2k 1440p is very noticeable, and the jump from 1440p to 4k is not so much, and often people have time noticing because games being developed just do not use 4k assets solely and focus on the largest buying block, 720-1080p.

Okay, so alot above, I know. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFZ5ofmZt58&feature=emb_logo linus tech tips buyer guide 2019, has helpful user information. So https://www.newegg.com/benq-ew2780q-27/p/N82E16824014725 this monitor would be most appropriate for you. at $300 and https://www.bestbuy.com/site/lenovo-q27q-10-27-ips-led-qhd-freesync-monitor-black/6404031.p?skuId=6404031&ref=212&loc=1&ref=212&loc=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw8J32BRBCEiwApQEKgTcmPylLWpBBJV1DjlDG4YawrYNVjJbOeH2l3yNcJKG3u-ZyWR1aNBoCEAoQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds at 200$

And this one at 250$ https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-PB277Q-WQHD-2560x1440-Monitor/dp/B01EN3Z7QQ

Here is what makes these monitors great for gaming. 27" 2k, IPS - cannot say enough about an IPS monitors (that are calibrated well), 60-75mhz, and decent build qualities. Faster framerates are really nice for about any game, especially FPS, but color correct depths and density of IPS is also hard to pass up. I would keep response times or monitor latencies below 6ms.

I should also mention that now, is really not a time to buy electronics because of the pandemic that has slowed production and demand is high. Just about everything is 25% marked up. So a 100$ monitor will now cost 125, and a 300 > 375. About as bad as 2017 when bitcoin market drove prices up. If you can wait till winter, not only will you get much better prices as production goes up, demand goes down, and the flooded used market will also drive prices down. There will also be newer products out as well. Faster, larger, IPS, new tech, and faster framerates, and more and more ultrawides as well.

I have been wanting one of those HDR 600, but will wait till prices cooldown alot.

@jenovaschilld: thanks for the input, IPS is indeed very rare (and expensive by extension) here. This new chinese 24" TV I use as monitor now barely hits HD and is 60 hz, but no doubt colors are vivid. Thank god I'm not into serious online Shooter competition, I'd be on a loosing end with such basic display D:

@santinegrete: You know alot of people use tvs as monitors, and while the gap between pixel density of tv is slowly closing in on those of monitors (couple of thousand dollar range) there are still some things that monitor shine at. But a good little tv sure is awesome, till a monitor becomes available.

There are some things you can do to find a great monitor cheap. Pawn shops, flea markets often have some amazing monitors but because it is often hard to figure out which monitor are good or not (and labeling is complicated), they sometimes sell them at a low price just to move them. There was a apple imac desktop all in one, that was gutted but for some reason the monitor was perfect. A little work and he was able to convert it for pc use, he even made a wooden frame around it, kinda cool. $30. Ebay will have some good monitor, since some people constantly upgrade. Monitors have so many hours of life, that alot of times you will get years of use and pay 1/2 the price. I look for ones that have no stands, they throw em away, and then upgrade and sell them much cheaper.

Also some sites have low priced IPS monitors that are not top of the line but still get the job done just fine. asus ips monitor 27" newegg for 150$ Of course right now is a bad time to buy electronics because of the pandemic inflation around the world. But you may find something great on craiglist.

I cannot brag enough on a properly calibrated and adjusted IPS monitor for Non- FPS games. It is hard to go back, in deed.

Just recently (in the last week) bought myself the LG UltraGear 27GL850-B Nano-IPS Monitor. It is fantastic. The colour is really deep and rich and the motion rate is great too. Worth the money for sure :)

@openmind23: Same monitor I'm using. Picked it up a few months ago was selling out everywhere. Really popular because the price isn't too expensive for the quality you get.
