TGS '07: Sony announces Dual Shock 3, delays Home

Kaz Hirai's keynote address reveals rumble-enhanced controller due in 2007 in Japan, 2008 in NA and UK; PS3's avatar-based network delayed until next spring.

TOKYO--Directly after the Tokyo Game Show's opening ceremony takes place, Sony's president and group CEO, Kaz Hirai, will be taking to the stage to deliver his keynote address on "A Look at Expanding Our Business Strategy Toward New Growth: The Expanding PlayStation World."

Kaz Hirai looming above himself.
Kaz Hirai looming above himself.

Hirai's presentation is taking place inside Makahuri Messe International Conference Hall, and the 1,000 seats allocated for members of the press, executives, and the general public are filled to capacity.

It has been rumored that the Sony executive will be taking the opportunity during his keynote address to make some announcements, including that of a Dual Shock 3 controller for the PlayStation 3.

[6:31] The venue is stuffed full to capacity, with a camera crews crammed into the back of the hall.

[6:32] The lights have gone down. It begins!

[6:33] A trailer is playing from the CESA to introduce TGS '07.

[6:33] Kaz Hirai is being announced. He takes to stage to rapturous applause.

[6:34] He welcomes everyone to the TGS and says that this is his first opportunity since taking up his new post to make a speech in front of so many people.

[6:35] He says that PlayStation, since 1994, has surpassed Sony's original business model.

[6:36] And has become a world leader.

[6:36] He says he will be talking about some of the company's ideas and how Sony will be contributing to the industry as a whole.

[6:36] Since he has taken over his position last September, he has been saying that the company needs to get back to basics and make more interesting games.

[6:37] The PS2 was launched in 2000, and this is the eighth year. Since 2000, the price has decreased drastically, he says.

[6:38] To date, 120 million PS2 units have been sold worldwide.

[6:38] The PS2 has enjoyed a far longer life than the PSOne. This year, more than 300 titles are scheduled to be released for the PS3.

[6:38] He displays a graph showing how the PS2 has enjoyed a long and healthy life, with all lines going upward to mark its record-breaking sales.

[6:39] "Now, with the PlayStation Portable, people can bring the functionalities of the PlayStation brand outside of the home," says Hirai.

[6:40] He boasts that Midnight Club II, Monster Hunter 2, and Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories have all become platinum titles on the PSP.

[6:40] "We will soon reach 30 million units sold for the PSP," promises the executive.

Hirai came armed with graphs galore.
Hirai came armed with graphs galore.

[6:40] Hirai shows off a picture of all the six new colors of the new slim PlayStation Portable, which is to be launched in Japan today.

[6:41] He goes on to talk about various bundles that have been launched for the PSP.

[6:43] Sony localizes all its packages and bundles for each market. Hirai talks about the PSP camera for Europe and Japan, as well as the 1 SEG Tuner for the new PSP.

[6:45] Hirai references the company's presentation at Leipzig and says that users are asking for such functionalities as mail, TV, pictures, and video.

[6:45] "Sony needs to further expand the multimedia capabilities of the PSP, as these are popular features," he says.

[6:46] There will now be a demonstration of the PSP's Remote Play from the PS3. A high-definition TV--Sony-made, naturally--is wheeled out on stage.

[6:47] Another Sony official takes to the stage to do the demonstration. He is talking up the PSP and the way it connects remotely to the PS3, so gamers can access PS3 functionalities on their PSPs.

[6:49] The exec says that in Japan, wireless is free and easily accessible from many free Wi-Fi points in shops and hotels. So this is a "really cool feature."

[6:50] Kaz Hirai has retaken the stage and is now showing off the way that the PSP can be used as an additional monitor, screen, or a controller for the PS3.

[6:51] There is also a voice-recognition function, and multiplayer games can be accessed by multiple users on multiple PSPs, with others joining as spectators.

[6:52] Hirai continues to talk about the possibilities of Remote Play in the future.

[6:52] Users will be able to play their games on the PS3s, and when they have to leave for work, continue playing them during their commutes on their PSPs.

[6:53] "PSP will make use of these extended functions to expand the world of PlayStation and will be a very important part of the platform's growth," says Hirai.

[6:54] He then apologizes for not being able to launch the PS3 at the same time worldwide in late 2006.

[6:54] Hirai hopes that the PS3 will become "the core home entertainment system."

[6:55] Some 40 PS3 titles will be at the Sony Computer Entertainment booth on the TGS floor, promises Hirai.

[6:55] Which titles, you ask? Hirai introduces them in the form of a video montage.

[6:56] Final Fantasy XIII, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and Devil May Cry 4 are shown briefly.

[6:57] They are followed by Sega Rally Revo, Call of Duty 4, Spider-Man 3, and Conan.

[6:57] Heavenly Sword, of course, is shown as well. Some of the titles are for Japan only and look quite quirky.

[6:58] MGS4 and Afrika finish off the video montage. Kaz asks the audience how they liked the games...

[6:59] ...after some applause, the lights come back up. Hirai then says Sony Computer Entertainment will be doing new things to work better with partners.

[6:59] "Further building close relationships with its partners and improving the development environment is a priority for Sony," he says.

[7:00] Sony will also be accelerating the development of first-party titles, promises Hirai, with an emphasis on PS3 titles.

[7:03] He is now talking about the acquisition of developers in Europe, such as Evolution Studios.

[7:03] Here comes another video montage: Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice and MotorStorm are the main games shown.

[7:04] Now down to brass tacks: Hirai says that Sony will be reducing PS3 manufacturing costs by making the console's semiconductors smaller and reducing the number of components in the system.

[7:04] Dual Shock 3 is now official. (For more on the Dual Shock 3, check out GameSpot's in-depth, hands-on profile of the peripheral.)

Surprise! It's the Dual Shock 3!
Surprise! It's the Dual Shock 3!

[7:05] "This came from listening to users who said that they wanted a vibration function on the PS3," says Hirai.

[7:06] Sony introduced the Sixaxis, but Hirai says the company realized users wanted Dual Shock. At first, they "thought it would be too difficult, but they have managed to overcome this difficulty." It is unclear if he means technology or Sony's legal battle with Immersion.

[7:07] The Dual Shock 3 looks exactly like the Sixaxis and will launch in Japan in November, as well as North America and Europe in spring 2008. No exact date or pricing are mentioned, nor does he say whether it has to be bought separately or will be bundled with future PS3s.

[7:07] Games that will use the Dual Shock 3's rumble function include DMC 4 and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

[7:08] As soon as the vibration function was decided upon, Sony announced it to its partners, although there was little time to add it to games before TGS. That said, 11 games so far have incorporated the function. (An updated list subsequently released by Sony shows over 60 titles will have Dual Shock 3 support.)

[7:09] As for existing titles, they can be updated via the PlayStation Network so they can use the vibration function, says Hirai.

[7:10] Hirai says this update is a result of how the game industry is moving rapidly toward a networked world.

[7:10] Now, he has an exciting announcement to make: Grand Turismo 5: Prologue will be available on December 13 in Japan.

[7:11] The subject quickly moves to the eagerly awaited virtual world and social network, PlayStation Home.

[7:11] Home has now been delayed. It was due to be released at the end of the year but will be pushed back to spring 2008

[7:12] "Please be patient," says Hirai.

[7:13] Hirai mentions "Everybody's Fashion Function," a way to dress Home avatars, but it's not sure exactly what he means. He promises more details will be given at the company's booth on the TGS show floor.

[7:14] On to the PlayStation Store. Currently, the store offers 30 PS3 games, 300 add-on items, 100 game archives, and 90 demo movies.

[7:15] People have been asking for more convenience and can now access the PlayStation Store from PCs and transfer content to PSPs as of today.

[7:15] Now Hirai talks the future possibilities for the PS3 and its powerful cell processor.

[7:15] He compares the PS3 to a supercomputer, going into much technical detail.

[7:16] He thinks that networked PS3s will propel Sony's effort to move into real-time entertainment.

[7:17] Oh, and "Blu-Ray discs provide the best video quality," he adds.

[7:17] Hirai then says he is happy that TGS is starting today and hopes to see the members of the audience at Sony's booth. Is that it?

[7:17] Apparently not. "Sony wants to be a much more active member of the gaming industry," says Hirai.

[7:18] "The game industry is quite unique compared to other industries," he says. "What Sony needs to do is get back to basics."

[7:18] "Gamers should be able to enjoy games with the rest of the world, and Sony would like to help them to do that."

[7:18] He thanks the audience for coming--to robust applause.

I've never heard so many people Bit ching and moan about being $hitted on for being the first to get a system. You want to be the first on your block to have somthing, then you pay the premium for it. Stop bitc hing. You were the sucker while some of us smarter people waited until the price and the features were right. You people sound like those iPhone clowns, mad that AT&T dropped the price of that contraption after they spent 600 bucks for it. NOBODY FEELS SORRY FOR YOU!

I am glad that he belives that the PS3 will become home entertainment booth as I also truly believe that in a few years it will begret, it has great potential and I believe it has greater funtions up its sleeve that the 360 and wii will not be able to compete with. I am not a fan as I own none of these consoles, I have a ds and ps2, I have played on all 3 next generation consoles and all are great yet in a few years I believe that ps3 will be the console everyone wants. I am glad that this article shows the same ideas athough Ihave to admit that it is very annoying that the dualshock is only being relised now!

"SAHeavyWeight: A console is not necessarily better if it has more technical features. The consumers decide what is successful. And right now the Xbox 360 is more successful. The ball is in the consumers court now." The consumers do decide. But too bad that argument can't be measured, seeing that the 360 had a year head start, and Halo 3 in the wings of PS3's release. Oh wait, it can be measured. PS3 outsold 360 in it's first year, WITH competition, something the 360 didn't have, not to mention that the price tag was much higher. And as for lack of games, sure there were some sinkers and floaters with PS3's release, but do you remember 360's exclusive? God... 90% of them were horrible. With Home, DualShock, lower prices, and the vast amount of games that'll be exclusive to the PS3 in 2008, I can see the 360 slowly sinking. PS - It makes me happy to hear that the 360's premier game (Halo 3) is rated lower than Call of Duty 4, and this is agreed upon by MANY old Halo fans.

@Onthe_dl You are absolutly right! My bro bought a 20g PS3 within the first week of launch. Jus about 6months later they dropped the 60g price to the 20g, then they started including 5 Blu-ray dvds, and now they got the damn Dula Shock 3 which will be included with the future PS3s. WTF! This is no way to treat loyal fans who've bought the damn system early and get crapped on in exchange! I hate Sony, maybe if they would stop delaying MGS4 & PShome I'd be happier, but no I'm angry and I hate Sony to hell. Looks like our PS3 will CONTINUE to collect dust :P

soooo what about my two six axis controllers i already bought, sony should have figured this out day one. i'm tired of getting punished for getting a system day 1 and then figuring out your the biggest sucker in the world because they just come out and make something else even better and cheaper because they don't give a **** about their loyal customers. how about giving us some games to play with those new fancy rumble pads. yeah so mgs is delayed, haze is definitely going to be pushed back to 08 after playing the demo it's pretty glitchy and they got a lot of work ahead of them, no ut3 until 08, pretty much i'm not going to be using my ps3 until 08, pretty pointless system if i can't have fun on it.

Man, look at all the wars going on. Sony this, and xbox that. Look, I'm a of video games. Nothining else. I want it all. Good looks, fast game play, and original games. For me there is nothing uglier than that bloody 360, what the hell were they thinking. Who wants freakin white! When you lay it on its side it looks like it wants you to flip it over,(just don't do it with a disc inside, it doesn't like that. No go ahead try it. I dare you to even pick it up.) and insert the your dirty old Halo 3 Disc into her dirty little slot. She'll wreck it if you so much as spank her. And what is with the FPS only blockbusters. I want more than the 2 bit w@#$% I wouldn't even so much Rent nevermind Marry. That Sony on the other hand is sexy as all hell. Never the same thing twice. Original games, sleek exterior, sexy bluetooth controllers, built in wireless, and doesn't even have a trace of that awfull disease known as the "Dreaded Ring of Death." Give Me sony anyday. and we'll let MS stand on the corner and continue doing what they do best, like the name implies, "Around the world anybody?" 360 asks.

I still think it was a strange decision on Sony's part to delay Home for the DS3. We need system features more than we need accessory features. As for everyone arguing 360 vs. PS3 I don't really see how this is the place for it... But PS3 blows 360 away just by the fact that 360 isn't getting Metal Gear Solid 4. And plenty of other stuff but that's already been said.

Going back to Victor's comment, I work at a UPS Store and I have been sending back 360's for repair EVERY day. I usually get 5 or so a day and that's just at my store! There are several in town so I could only imaging how many of these broken xbox 360's there are in the UPS system. I personally like PS3 better and enjoy seeing these POS xbox's going in for repair... can't wait for MGS4 to come out! The anticipation is eating me alive as Resistance and Warhawk tie me over until the November.

I wasn't going to comment but someone HAD to bring up the "360 came out first so its the oldest technology so HAS to be inferior to the PS3" argument. Hello, wake up. The PS3 specs had already been decided as far back as the 360 specs had. Both consoles, technically, are as old as each other. The PS3 came out later not because it was more up-to-date, because they couldn't get the manufacturing right. Sure the reason for that is they were going for a "different" technology and yes that means it does some things differently or better than the 360, but it doesn't automatically make the games BETTER. If what the 360 is pulling now is all it can do, I can live with that. The games are fun, entertaining and here NOW. I have been playing it for well over a year whereas even if I COULD afford a PS3 I would be missing out on some of my favourite games. PGR3, Kameo, BioShock, Burnout Revenge, the latter being FAR more fun online on 360 than the old Xbox or PS2 versions. Lets not forget Crackdown too, I spent HOURS playing that in co-op mode chatting away over Xbox Live. It has been a great way to enjoy a game while also getting to know friends better. Oblivion, yes its on PS3 but I was playing it before it came out on PS3 and time HAS to be factored into this because without it, what else would I have been doing? Then theres Xbox Live. The fact that its seamless, full integrated into ALL games has allowed me to meet many new friends and chat with them seamlessly over whatever game I might be playing. No other console does that. Lets also not forget Xbox Live Arcade games. I own about 20 of those which ALSO are not available on PS3. The majority of what I play is not on PS3 and I see nothing on PS3 that peaks my interest, other than the multiplatform games I already own on 360. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slagging off the PS3 here, its a good console (in theory). Its just anyone claiming that it being more powerful than 360 makes it more fun are just dillussional. I have had far more fun on 360 games than I could possibly have on PS3 because it doesn't have the games I love.

Sigil-otaku or whatever your name is, by your comments you really show who the fanboy really is. Yes, the 360 has a bigger library than the PS3 but that still doesnt make it a console thats worth it...Right now the 360 has only 3 strong games; halo 3, bioshock & GOW (All 3 games are on PC or they will be, so they arent real exclusives), the rest are multiplatform. Another important thing is the 360's unreliability. If I pay $399 for a videogame console I expect that thing to work the way it should, I dont want a screen freezing all the time or those annoying red lights that are pissing off alot of people, I want to play a game peacefully without worrying that the next time I turn it on it will die on me. I've had 2 different 360's already in less than 6 months and my PS3 still works like new. As far as pricing the PS3 is at a reasonable price right now ($499 - 60GB).

Seriously, why has it taken this long? Wait, let me re-phrase that - why was the Dual Shock scrapped in favour of th Six Axis in the first place??? Riddle me that, Batman...

I own a PS3 and Xbox 360. They both have their strong points and that is why I have both of them. Anybody who says Halo 3 is a bad game isjust delirious and stupid. Halo 3 is a very enjoyable game that also has a great enjoyable multiplayer that brings gamers together not just on the internet but in your friends house. Gaming is about having fun and Halo 3 gives gamers a way to have fun with their friends and the PS3 also has many games on the way that will do the same. In the end the PS3 will probably be on top, but that is how sony planned it. They put the latest cutting edge technology into the PS3 so it would last for a long time and right now that is exactly what it is going to do.

@ Victor_N: No need to spew your fanboy bias around here because it means nothing, it's just ranting. Halo is over rated but not in a bad way, people are just excited and all good games get over rated when they're popular, Killzone 2 is massively hyped despite the flop of the first killzone title. The PS3 has overcome nothing, it's still waiting for the majority of it's better titles and doesn't have enough great games now, the price is still an obstacle and in terms of sales it's not doing any better than before so what obstacles is it overcoming? My 360 also died and it's being repaired but so what? I'd rather have a 360 than a PS3 still because on the PS3 there isn't enough games I want. Let me guess by the end of the year there'll be 20 million sold PS3's and still only 10 million Wii and 360 by your estimations.

Halo is definately overrated and xbox is not doing so good nowadays...I just sent over my 360 to the repair center for the famous "three red lights of death" and the guys in the UPS store said they were sending an average of two 360's per week. As far as the PS3, it is showing that it will overcome all obstacles and finally succed over the 360 and the wii. The Wii is an excellent console for the family but it gets boring after a while. I can say it because I own all Next-Gen consoles

antonior...you're right!!! waiting is so much fun!!! I can't wait to wait!!! In the last generation, the xbox came out later and had better technology and graphics. But the ps2 came out on top in sales....sounds like the reverse is happening this generation. And by the way, I own BOTH systems. But I find my 360 to be better in alot of ways. I'm just sick of the idea of paying $600 bucks for a system, then waiting and waiting. Too bad thats what you are doing right now.

OK... since this ended being a fight between xbox and ps fans, here is what I have to say: I'm a big PS fan, I owned the original PS, the PS2 and now i have a PS3 and until this day sony has always delivered stuff that i really liked. I don't mind waiting another year to see the good games, actually i always thought it was a very cheap tactic from microsoft to put the xbox 360 in sale a year before sony and nintendo did it. And it was really stupid because now the xbox 360 is the oldest console out there and with technology it means its the worst one and nobody can deny that. Even the Wii with its low technology is even funnier to play than the xbox. And there is no point in arguing which console is the best one. And yes... of course there r a lot more games out there for the xbox 360 than for the PS3. Only the idiots that own an xbox 360 bring that fact to the discussion. Let me explain this to u once and for all: the xbox 360 has been out there for a lot of time, it has to have a lot more games!!!!! And talking about that... even if there was going to be only one game available for the PS3 i would own a PS3 if that game was MGS4... there is no xbox or wii game that comes close to it. And for all of u xbox fans... halo is a average shooter and there are tons of those out there... so i really dont know what do u see in that game... ive played it in some friends xbox and any james bond game its better, seriously.

It's funny how huge PS fan react to this news, which mostly are what SHOULD'VE HAD been when PS3 was first released. The fact is, xbox gamers are too busy playing Xbox while PS3 fans are looking for promising news on the internet and dream about it while drooling over xbox games that are being released much more constantly. And no I don't own any consoles. I am a PC gamer.

I got my ps3 from launch day 1...and here are some things i've been saying all the damn time: 1. Wow I can't wait!!! Oh wait, yes I can... 2. Awww...it's going to be sweet...when it finally arrives... 3. Gears of War? You wait three more years, then talk my friend!!! 4. Halo 3?? Screw that, lets watch my blu ray copy of glitter again!!! Thats why I play my 360 more. With my ps3 I wait and tell everyone how sweet things will be...(while my life wastes away). With my xbox 360...i'm too busy to tell anybody anything. I just play some sweet ass games.

Maybe not "pointless" but it's still very much a gimmick in my eyes. @Mrfrieze i totally agree of course xbox is going to have better statistics when it has been out for longer and more games because developers have had more time to work with it, this is all logical and expected. However i am not happy with delays, Stranglehold was going to be a game i play while waiting for others. it to is being delayed. I am just a little disappointed as others im sure are. ps i would never own an xbox, EVER!, if i was given it as a gift i couldn't sell it quicker for virtually any price and then put that into a PS3 straight up, so i dont mind waiting!
