Tetris Movie Adds Mortal Kombat Producer, Has $80 Million Budget

The upcoming Tetris movie will be "an epic, sci-fi thriller."

With the Assassin's Creed film set to hit theaters later this year, another video game movie is moving forward into production. Threshold Global Studios' first project is to adapt the classic video game Tetris to film.

Threshold Global Studios, a joint venture between Threshold Entertainment and Seven Star Works, announced that the upcoming Tetris movie's financing, story, and producers have been locked down. The movie will be "an epic, sci-fi thriller" with Larry Kasanoff (Mortal Kombat, True Lies) and Bruno Wu are on board to produce.

"Tetris, one of the most recognized video game franchises of all time, is a perfect first project for this strategy," said Kasanoff. "For our debut project, Threshold Global Studios will bring one of the most beloved, cross-generational gaming brands in the world to the big screen as an epic, sci-fi thriller."

"Today there are so many great sources on which to build a movie blockbuster and video gaming is certainly an amazing category with its huge international following, so to have this legacy brand, Tetris, is a great, first project for us with Larry, who knows his way around this landscape," said Wu.

Threshold's Jimmy Ienner is on as executive producer, while line producer Dane Smith (Deadpool, Harry Potter) will work on Tetris's visual effects.

Blue Planet Software CEO Maya Rogers, described as the "sole agent for the Tetris brand," said they're "very excited to bring Tetris fans worldwide this epic tale in the form of a major motion picture." Tetris fans probably didn't expect their favourite puzzle game to become a science-fiction thriller.

It was also announced that Tetris will have an $80 million budget. This is one of the biggest US-China co-production projects, according to the press release. Filming will take part at least partially in China with Chinese actors in the cast.

No details about the movie's plot were revealed, but GameSpot will keep you up to date on the Tetris film as more information becomes available.

Oh this I gotta see, it may sucks but maybe it'll be a stupidly laughable movie. Since it will have Chinese actors, there better be some Kung Fu actions as well.

I can see it now...

"Since he saw his parents being smashed by a T-Block, he/she could never again eat a T-bone steak without screaming. Now, the world is being invaded by aliens, with ships of all shapes and sizes (wink wink). Game On, motherf***ers!"

Oscar material right there.

Ugh, don't we already have enough terrible video game movies with absolutely NOTHING to do with the actual video game?!

Seriously, what even is this, a real-life attempt at the scheme from Mel Brooks' The Producers? Because I find it hard to believe that anybody would greenlight this expecting it to be a legitimate success.

When I first saw this I was expecting a Documentary involving the game's development, which could have actually been good. This is just a joke.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: Yeah it's so odd, maybe that's their marketing strategy? Lots of people know what Tetris is, maybe they figure the idea of a movie will sound so silly that people will feel compelled to go see what it is?

Well it's probably one of the more creative ideas I've heard coming out of Hollywood in a while, I just don't know how it's gonna work...

@rasdorx: By making it a documentary regarding the lives of the game's creators. No seriously, that could actually be a good movie. Look into the history of Tetris' development and the aftermath for its creators. WARNING: it gets extremely dark.

@Blk_Mage_Ctype: Actually, that doesn't sound half bad and I will be looking into the history. Though while that does sound like a decent movie, I can't see it being the "epic, sci-fi thriller" they're talking about. I'm worried we're going to have another Battleship on our hands...

Is this some sort of crazy prank? Are they punk'd-ing the world? I think there needs be an audit of the investors to see if this is like the German tax loopholes that financed all of Uwe Boll's trash movies.

The only good Tetris movie would be a film about how they came about inventing the game of Tetris. This is trash.

@cornbredx: Tetris is a Russian game, a puzzle brain game, the electronic version was made by Alekey Pajitnov while still in Russia and licensed later on......the whole story of the making is pretty epic and murky in some bits, originally it was licensed to Atari for arcades and tengen ported it to NES while Nintendo obtained legal license they sued Tengen who eventually shut down due to their copyright infringements and attempts to circumvent the lockout chip anyways Nintendo released an official NES and Gameboy Tetris which was a massive seller when it came out....and even though people don;t talk about it much and lots of bad versions made people still think fondly of Tetris, interesting spot to hold for a game....

*disclaimer, I;m no expert and I may have a few things in error or completely wrong....or may not know the whole story....

Watch it turn out to be some kind of generic alien invasion movie like Battleship but however, I really enjoy the Battleship movie. Honestly, I had the same doubts when I heard they were making a Lego movie but that worked out amazingly well. I think Hollywood needs more ideas like this where they take a franchise that you think, 'no way can they make a movie out of this.' and they do, because so far it's ended up with creative genius.

And speaking of Tetris movie, I played the hell out of Tetris when my Dad went out and buy me my first Gameboy with Tetris and I couldn't even let go of that game back in the 90's. I still play other Tetris games every now and then.
