Tesla Is Hiring A New Game Development Team
The game-focused job listings mention building a brand-new gaming platform.
Tesla's fleet of electric vehicles has doubled as a very large, very expensive gaming console ever since Tesla Arcade launched in June last year. Now, it looks like Elon Musk's auto company is looking to expand its gaming chops, with a series of new game-focused job listings centered in Austin, Texas.
As reported by Electrek, hidden among a heap of job listings for Gigafactory Texas are a few more software-focused jobs including one for a video games engineer, software engineer and rendering engineer. These jobs seem to come in addition to a Tesla gaming team already based in Bellevue, Washington--back in 2018, Musk tweeted about wanting to hire gaming talent for a project that presumably culminated in the launch of Tesla Arcade in 2019.
Notably, however, the job listings seem more focused on building a gaming platform than on developing singular games. The video games engineer listing reads:
"In this incredibly rare opportunity to help build a video games platform, we are looking for a highly motivated software engineer to help enable the best video game content to be available in-car. Come put that industry experience to great use and help us build this platform."
The games currently available on Tesla Arcade are all licensed, including Fallout Shelter and Cuphead, so it doesn't look like Tesla has its sights set on first-party games just yet. Notably, the company once approached Nintendo about licensing an in-car version of Mario Kart, but when the gaming giant refused they went for the lesser known racing title Beach Buggy Racing 2 instead.
